100 Throttle Cable seized again - options?
Ok I have about had it with this one. My cub sits outside and the choke and throttle cables are again stuck. Throttle cable broke off up at the lever.
Are there stainless cables I can attach to the CC throttle lever, or can these be covered in heat shrink or other tubing to keep the lube inside and the water outside? Ideas welcome! |
Try searching push and pull cables in the marine industry....for boats. They do make stainless.

K thanks, I will look at marine products. be nice if I could marry a marine cable to the OEM throttle lever and that should be doable.

Have you ever tried using "chain and cable spray" ? I believe it's made by " Lubriplate". It works great on motorcycle cables and chains. I also used it for my hood release cable for the car. Speedometer cable .

I have the same frozen/seized cable issue on a 100 myself. I am planning on using an ultrasonic cleaner and then high pressure air. Lastly I’ll soak it down internally with motorcycle chain lube

Ok I fixed it at least for now.
1) loosen the cable pinch screw at the governor 2) remove air cleaner and loosen the cable attachment screw under there 3) remove the two throttle unit mounting screws on side of tower (backing nuts are inside) 4) turn the throttle and push the handle thru the slot to remove the whole thing 5) the outer cable unscrews from the throttle unit 6) pull out the inner cable with vice grips, if stuck, soak w pb blaster 7) run 320 sandpaper up and down the cable to remove scale and corrosion 8) make sure inner cable ends are bent perfectly straight (use small vice grips) 9) coat with anti-sieze and push thru, pull all way through, recoat, repeat several times In my case since the end had broken off, I cut that much off the outer cable to match using Klein's lineman dykes Reassemble and wait for the next time in a year or two! :beerchug: I will try to source a stainless inner cable before then! |
To free up a frozen one, shoot as much PB down the thing as possible. Then flex the outside back and forth along the length of the cable. The housing is springy so you can move it back and forth to un-freeze it.
I've never had this NOT work. |

These older cubs at least are just wire-winded outside with a stiff wire inner. Jbrewer method opens the cracks and lets the lube soak in. I was looking for something more durable when mentioning covering the cable because otherwise water soaks in on that lower curve that hangs down exposed between the tower and the carb.
In my case see above, I think the sanding the inner cable and applying anti-sieze may help. That said, I realize now that the cub should not just be left exposed anyway so I will make a breathable rain cover for it. Has to be breathable because a tarp will just trap moisture and make all of the tractor rust even worse. But a tarp open at the ends would go a long way... |
Frozen cable
Hey Rhodey ! Check this out. Google; Motorcycle cable lubrication tool. Would have to use it when it’s thawed out. Wet is ok. Only have to disconnect one end of the cable, preferably the higher end. I use PJ motorcycle chain lubricant. For me it has been good for several seasons. Good Luck! Steve .
