Govoner replacement

My goveoner on my 66 122 went bad I reset the govoner to throtel shaft relation and it still wont work (it will run good for a littel while the it just takes off and runs over 3800 rpms). How do I get to the governer to replace it ? Since I will be at it any way I will just replace the whole thing:bash2:

Bad news.
If I remember correctly, you have to have the camshaft out to get the governor out. Almost complete disassembly of the engine is involved. (I don't remember the specifics as to what you can and can't get away with concerning the reciprocating assembly.....disassembly. I'd have to look at the Kohler service manual.)
Great thing is, these engines are simple as far as engines go.

Best of luck.

It requires complete disassembly. Read and follow the service manual.

Thanks for the help.

Does your 122 have this throttle stop on it(L shape bracket)?

Is it set?

I would check that first. If the stop is not set right the motor will run some big RPMs before it lets loose.

Merk,
do you mean this piece if so how do you set it correctly?

Merk 08-12-2010 05:44 PM

Loosen the bolt below the throttle cable and spring. It will allow the L-bracket-throttle stop to move. I would move the throttle stop counter clockwise a little and tighten the bolt. Move your throttle to wide open position. The piece that the throttle cable connects to should be against the throttle stop. Start you Cub up and run the motor wide open making sure the motor isn't running to fast( I do this by ear). Using a tach, check the motor's RPMs. Kohler spec for maxium RPM is 3600.

You may need to move throttle stop if the RPM is too high or low. Repeat the above process if it needs moved

Thanks everyone.

Ljones one other thing when rebuilding a gov is to make sure not to lose the washer behind the weighted gear. It will not work correctly if it is missing. Just a little tidbit of info for you. BTDT Kelly

There is a washer back there? I just replaced the governor in one of my 16 horses and I don't remember seeing one... Engine is back in already... In a QL so I don't want to take it out again

Matt G. 08-14-2010 08:41 AM

They don't all have a washer there. I think when you replace the governor that washer is discarded because the new governor gear doesn't use it.

ljones 08-14-2010 06:21 PM

Matt,
so do I need to use the washer or not ?

Matt G. 08-14-2010 06:28 PM

The new governor gear will come with instructions. Just follow those.

Thanks Matt.
