IH Busted pulley, spindle or both?
4 Attachment(s)
This is from a 48" mowing deck (U1111). Its that notched piece on the pulley that is deformed.
Do I have a busted pulley, busted spindle or both? Attachment 104422 Attachment 104423 Also if you see below, this was the hardware that the securing the pulley with the zirk bolt. Is that how its supposed to be or is that a hack? Attachment 104424 Attachment 104425 If someone would be so kind to explain what I have here I would appreciate it. Thank you. |
The hardware is correct. looks like a new pulley and spindle is in order.
Maybe PBJ may be able to help. |
Thanks... i wished i could find a parts diagram for it... i think its 483u1111 it came off a 149.
I cant even find a photo to confirm but im thinking the notch is on the spindle and the pulley has like a tooth/key that slides into the notch. Its that piece on the pulley that broke. The spondle spins nicely without the pulley installed. Deck is in good condition too, i hope i can find a replacement pulley and get to use it but that doesnt look promising. |

here is a pic I found in my files ! and yes there is a keyway in the spindle and the pulley, your keyway looks pretty hammered !Like Lew said looks like a replacement is needed !:beerchug:

Thank you very much!
So keyway meaning there is a notch in both pulley and spindle and then a key to slide into them? Or is the notch you see in the pulley the broken key piece? Now for the hard part, finding parts i need! (without draining my wallet would be nice too i bet thoses parts will be more than the deck is worth! |
new stuff is $$$$ try to find a good used assembly ,perhaps a member here can help you out !! each piece is "notched" the pulley slides down over the spindle shaft, the key slides in ( I think key is 1/4 x 1/4 about the length of the pulley thickness ) the washers and grease fitting hold it together !

Does anyone out there know where i can find the parts diagram for 483u1111? Or maybe the part number for a center pulley?

Which pulley? The center main drive piece or one of the 2 on the outer ends? |
The center pulley with the multiple tracks. Thanks.

I was able to find deck number 483 u111. Which means 48 deck 3 blades.

I found a pulley but I am having trouble reinstalling all the hardware. The spindle spins nice and freely. But when I put it all together in the order I think it goes, it seizes up when I tighten down.
I got the deck with a broken spindle and the hardware was in this order. This is the order I am trying to install it... i never removed the plate holding in the spindle. The only thing removed as far as i know was just the pulley snd hardware. left to right (key not pictured) Attachment 104499 1. Flat large washer 2. Flat large washer 3. thicker smaller washer with concave end 4.pulley 5. thicker washer with lip/lock 6. washer that fits over the lip 7. White top washer that the bolt/zierk fits into. I checked the service manual for the 149 and it doesnt show this hardware. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. These photos show the order I am installing the above hardware. Thanks, i didnt see that diagram when "googling". But unfortunetly it doesnt show the hardware for attachment..... i nevet opened up the spindlle cup.. i only removed pulley and hardware.
Im thinking there is added hardware here i dont need that the previous guy used to compensate for a broken pulley. How "tight" should the center spindle be exactly? Should it be firm and only able to turn by hand or should it spin effortlessly like it does before i tighten? Ps, thanks for your patience, this mower and tractor is new to me, i apologize . |
If someone out there could help me get this back together I truly would appreciate it, let me know if there are any other photos or information I can provide.
One thing I noticed that might be a missing piece is the lock washer... The other two spindles have star washers directly under the zierk bolt... I have no star washer for the center pully. The washer under the zierk bolt is white and it looks like it may have wear on the top from a star pattern. Im wondering if the other two pulleys would have the same hardware as the center pulley. Again I am going by the 149 service manual and there really is no description of the fasteners. |

Are there any washers on the top of the spindle housing? |

So from top of spindle housing im putting the following hardware Thin large washer Thin large washer Approx half inch washer that fits snug around shsft Pulley/key Washer with lip Thin washer thst fits around lip White washer Greese bolt Too much stuff? Perhaps added by PO because pulley was worn? Thank you for trying to help me. |
That may work but you should check the old pulley bore length and compare it to the new pulley you got.
|
Ill try it without anything between spindle housing and pulley, i hope thats it.
Between the pulley and the greese bolt though, what hardware should be there? |
Thanks Darkminion, that did it.
I got rid of those washers. The only thing holding the pulley on now is a flat washer on top and the zerk bolt. It spins freely when tightened down and I have the deck on the tractor again! Last question and then I have some cutting to do.... do I need a lock washer in addition to the flat white washer under the zerk bolt? As for the additional hardware, the only thing I can think off is they were added to compensate for the worn pulley. The notch on that pulley was worn out and maybe the guy needed those extra washers to keep it as tight as possible? |
I would put one on, but the star washer would be betterer.

This is how mine exist. The pulley sits directly on the shoulder of the spindle. However, I have had some where I added a thin washer there to raise the pulley because the pulley was rubbing the deck or the bolt heads that hold the spindle housing to the deck. No lock washer on the zerk bolt although I don't know what it would hurt.

Thanks for the photos ironman. I did some mowing today with the IH 48" deck with hydro lift... its real smooth and quiet in comparison to my sears mtd mower........and 40+ years older too! Thanks again.
