Painting a original

I keep on going back and forth on whether or not I should paint my Cub Cadet Original. https://imgur.com/22K95xy

That depends on the current condition. And whether the paint is original. If you have good original paint, it would be a crime to paint fresh.

Personally,, I would paint it RED!! :bigthink:

From the looks of that hood, it's gonna take a little more than a couple rattle cans!!

I would paint it.

Paint it. If you would be happier with it painted than so be it. You do not have to please us or the correct police. Your tractor do it your way.
That is the way I fly. None of my cubs are 100% original. Most have either added factory options or things I add to suit me. Good luck with your decision.

How much you spend will really be determined by how nice of a job you wan it to be.

In other words, you get what you pay for.

Number 1. Paint removal.
You could disassemble the tractor and have all pieces sand blasted or rent a sandblaster and do it yourself. Cost of this could be 100$-250$ depending on the route you take.

You could go the old fashion route, combination of sanding and paint remover.
This is time consuming and still costs a little money. Maybe 75$ in sanding disks and paint remover. And of course your time.

Sand blasting is of course a more thorough job.

You could do the ole scuff and shoot. This would be the least pretty finished result of the 3 choices. It is also the least expensive

The number one rule in painting is.. Preparation is the key to good results.

Lets assume for a moment that you chose to sand blast. "This would be my choice"
After all the pieces are blasted they need further preparation before paint. They definitely need a good cleaning but also may still require some sanding, body work, etc.

After all your "prep" work is done, Blasted, cleaned, body work done and cleaned again, you will be ready for primer.

Depending on what type of blast media was used, you may need to use a self etching primer first. The process of media blasting can actually make the metal "too smooth" for painting. I tend to use it all the time when I have bare worked metal surfaces. Its cheap and good insurance.

If you use self etch primer you still would want to use a primer sealer on top of that. This will seal and protect all of your metal and body work..

The self etch and primer sealer material will cost you anywhere from 100$ to 200$ depending on the manufacturers you pick.

Now... Get ready for some more sanding. Many say you dont need to sand primer/sealer. I do it anyway. On this many pieces of metal even an expert that paints everyday will have an imperfection or 2. I like to wet sand my sealer from 600-1200 or higher depending on the finish i am looking for...

Now its time to paint.. Cost can be little or great in this step. Many will use cheaper materials in this step. I look at it like this.. After spending all the time, effort and money I did in the prep, Why skimp now?

You really have 2 choices here. Single stage paint "one step gives you paint and clear coat in one step" or Multi stage Base coat/clear coat paint.

Paint cost can vary a lot. From 100$ to $300 again depending on the quality of the finish your looking to achieve.

So. Here is the real question. What is your total budget for this project?

If you say $300 total. Well.. Your arms will get a nice work out sanding but you can achieve a decent finish for 300$
If you say up to $1000. You can get a real showroom looking finish but your skill level may hold you back from achieving perfection.

My suggestion.. Count on spending $500, spending lots of time with attention to detail, and you will end up with a paint job you can be plenty proud of.

Sorry this was so long winded but when it comes to paint work the cost can be really subjective.

JaydenB 03-22-2020 04:39 PM

JaydenB 03-24-2020 11:13 AM

A good idea would be to make use of the "Restoration Tips" venue on this forum. There are 326 total threads and only God can count how many replies. Probably half of them have to do with painting and literally all your questions have been asked before and have been answered before. All you have to do is take some time and read.................
