Vintage 1979 1450 complete with all of the fun to fix QuietLine issues. The deal included a QA 42 with and a 44A deck. What am I going to do with it...good question:Huh:...I rarely part out this series tractor....it has potential to be a great tractor again.

darkminion_17 11-06-2019 08:20 PM

That is a nice find, was it a local find or an OTR one?

A friend of mine about two hours away told me I needed this tractor.

CubDieselFan 11-06-2019 09:46 PM

Long live the Queen. Looking forward to seeing you save it.

cubby102 11-07-2019 02:52 AM

Wow, that's nicer than my main 1450! Nice grab

R Bedell 11-07-2019 07:05 AM

Good catch Beth. I have one also, one of my favorite models.

Thanks to you, any tractor you get has the potential to be a great tractor again! Nice find!

mortten 11-07-2019 09:18 PM

Nice pickup Beth.

Looks great Beth. Don't part that sucker, save it!:biggrin2:

That's a beauty Beth.. Great find and best of luck with it. Still searching for a 1450 in my neck of the woods that is as nIce as that

Any progress on the tractor?

An update on the 1450. Since I went back into the workforce (OTR truck driver), I have very little time for my toys . It has all the usual Quietline issues plus a few extra. The engine valves were not the best so they will be replaced too. Items to be repaired; new engine mounts, new driveline parts, replace muffler and air duct/box around muffler and weld several cracked places on the chassis and hood. The oil pan was badly worn from bad mounts...a new one will be installed.

Looks like they got there use out of that one, do you have a better frame in your stash?

An update...it has only been four months. I dunno...a glacier makes more progress moving along than I do working on these tractors! The frame was cracked in several places. I don't have any donor frames right now so welding it was the next best option. The right front spindle is very sloppy in the axle casting. I do have extra spindles and wide frame axles available.....but...was thinking of installing a "cyclops" style axle. I have two styles available. This is an experiment so I need input as to what will be the best choice. This tractor will be used to mow, till and remove snow. As always PICS!

DeltaCub 07-24-2021 10:57 AM

Should I install a "cyclops" style axle? :bigthink:

darkminion_17 07-24-2021 11:08 AM

Depends on whatcha using it for as it will raise the front up. I see one may be from the early style cyclops that came on a 1541 and such. That one would not raise the front.

I plan on using it to mow, till and remove snow. Cumulative wear on the deck hanger and mating round bar at mid chassis causes the deck pitch to be quite low. I try to set the deck pitch higher in the front like Simplicity to improve the cut quality. The "cyclops" axle(s) will result in a wider stance and an improved turning radius but which one will give me the height I need without creating other problems? Others have done this swap...just looking for input. :beerchug:

darkminion_17 07-24-2021 04:59 PM

Looks like the axle towards the front of the frame, you can compare it with the old one that you took off it.

finsruskw 07-24-2021 05:39 PM

Slop in the axle:

Is it wear on the bolt through the sleeve, wear on the sleeve through the axle itself or a combination of both?

When the bolt through the sleeve is tight it should clamp the knuckle onto the sleeve and both should turn freely as an assembly in the axle.

An overdue update...The block has been bored 0.010 over, valves seats cut and guides cleaned and checked. Cylinder head has been bead blasted and resurfaced. The adjusters on the tappets have been machined too.

I never trust old governor assemblies! They are not cheap...but prove to be an excellent value when properly rebuilding one of these engines. Piston and rings were fitted at the machine shop.
Crankshaft has been ground 0.020 undersize and bearing surfaces polished.

DeltaCub 12-06-2021 11:28 PM

Thoroughly cleaning parts is paramount! Bearings and camshaft rod soaking in diesel fuel. The block is pressure washed before and after the teardown. Obviously it cleaned with solvent after the machining process. I apply oil to block and internal components to keep from rusting.
Bought an after market muffler assembly. This thing is heavy and will require additional bracing....."muffler crutch".

BTW, I still have not decided which axle to install. The axle center has some wear but it is tolerable. The spindle tubes are worn resulting in sloppy, floppy spindles. I have wide frame axles and parts available but would like to try the "Cyclops" style for tighter turning.

Darrell 12-07-2021 08:41 PM

Where did you get the muffler ?? Curious about how loud it is.

DeltaCub 12-07-2021 10:51 PM

I bought the muffler from Cub Cadet Specialties. This is the first aftermarket muffler I have found for a Quiet line series and have no idea how effective it is. Rolling the dice....

West Valley G 12-08-2021 06:46 PM

Looks great, seeing all those beautiful parts gives me the last nudge I
need to finally get going on my winter Cub project.

Looking forward to the final product.

I've only rebuilt one cub, my 1282, due to sentimental value. Sadly it's a lot more economical to get a parts engine. In the case of my 1711, I had nothing into it, and went with a Command (that paid for itself).

Certainly better to keep some things original :beerchug:

I had some vacation time off from work. So, it was time to get this 1450 project finished. As I mentioned before, this tractor had all of the Quiet Line afflictions including a tired engine. The engine was the easiest part of this project. You can see pics about the engine in previous pics. I had to replace the air duct housing along with an aftermarket muffler and a "muffler crutch". The muffler is heavier than the OEM but mounts easily and is very quiet! Since this was a late model 1450, I cut off the excess exhaust pipe. ( Does not protrude through the grill)
I installed new rag joints and hardware but broke my own rule...I did not install new couplers and drive shaft. I started the tractor....engine runs great but tractor had severe vibration! So, dang it all I have to change out the worn parts. Fortunately, I had a new shaft and couplers on hand...changed them out. Much smoother....for a Quiet Line. Finished assembling the unit and installed the mower deck. The unit will be a worker and not show piece. It needs a bath and it will get it after I mow some grass with it.

I also installed a new field coil since the old one beyond repair.

The completed tractor!

That's so cool! I love seeing these tractors still going strong.
My 1250 needs the cork gasket replaced. Can it be done without splitting the tractor or am I just dreaming?

Hi Randy. Yes you can replace the cork gasket without splitting the tractor. However, the drive line should be removed to gain access...you may open a Pandora's box by taking an old Quiet Line drive line apart. Remember that little pump is heavy. BTW, I did change the cork gasket on the 1450 without splitting the tractor.

Thanks, I'm going to try it. It's getting bad.

I need to replace the cork gasket on my 1450 too. I assumed its obvious you need to remove the driveshaft to remove the pump without splitting the tractor? there nowhere to pull the pump off otherwise.
I have replacement flex couplers that I'm going to replace at the same time and If I can get the motor mount mod welded on a spare pair of mount brackets i bought and borrow an engine lift to upgrade that and the the oil pan. The motor mount are sagging and I figured its best to "fix" the whole drivetrain and not run with it partially redone.

Make sure you get a new drive shaft and the couplings for each end of the drive shaft. I would also strongly recommend replacing the swivel bearing on both ends too, otherwise, a nasty vibration may occur.

what is the "swivel bearing"? I'm looking at the parts diagram and don't see the normal driveshaft in the assemblies, just the clutch dissconnect option.

There is one on the engine side where the front flex disc mounts and one on the hydro input shaft coupler.
