New guy here with a CC 100

Hi. I recently found a 1964 100 that was way too cool to pass up. Not new to garden tractors or Cub cadets. This is my first older cub cadet.
Bought it non running for just $100. Took it home cleaned the points and put fresh gas in it and it's a great runner. Decided to start tearing it down, repairing and replacing everything that needs it along the way. Then decided I couldn't put it back without new paint. So now it's getting new paint. Fun project. Should be a nice show tractor when done. |
Welcome to OCC :Welcome2:
Good find and Great deal! I have my eye out for a 100 also for a total restore. Did the wheel weights come with it also? If they did you got the tractor for free! :beerchug: |
Don't forget to post pictures along the way!
We all likes pictures! :biggrin2: |
Wheel weights came with it and a 42 inch deck.
I would love to post pictures along the way. |

While I waited for the paint on the grill to dry. I pulled the engine out.

I took a grinder to the grill and cleaned up the casting. Put a but of bondo on it too. Looks better than new now.
|
Looking good! What brand of paint did you decide to go with?
It's going to look great when it's done! Again, you got the deal of a lifetime on that tractor, unless you consider free even better but for this day and age a $100 is like free. Good for you! |
Majic paint from tractor supply. I've heard a lot of bad about it but not sure why. I painted a gilson tractor with it two years ago and its held up.

Your moving along just fine. Take your time and enjoy the ride.
Unfortunately I don't have the time or space to do it the proper way so I'm just giving it a facelift from front to back a little atta a time. When I relocate I'll eventually tear it all apart and replace and repair everything that needs to be done to make it new again.....:beerchug: https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...attach/bmp.gifhttps://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...attach/jpg.gif |
Wow, that's looking good!
Quick question, what should I paint the engine with? Do I need high temp paint? |

Thanks! Progress is moving very slow right now.
I used this paint from HD. It says it's protected up to 1200 degrees so well see. I only applied a thin layer to the fins. Just enough to cover the brown rusty color. I wire brushed them real good first. You don't see much of them after all is put back together anyway. I'll probably blast the muffler and spray it black also. All the parts that I could remove were sand blasted before painted... https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...attach/jpg.gif |
So, everything else can be painted with regular paint?
I plan on tearing down the engine and rebuilding it. |
Yes, I would say so. However I see a lot of people spraying the fins with the same paint and it looks good. Others say that spraying the fins may prohibit the cooling. Duplicator engine enamel has ceramic in it to help with heat transfer and durability, biggest problem is cleaning the engine good enough to get rid of the rust and grease. I just liked the look of the flat black fins. I'm not an expert on painting by any means, just doing what I think might be best. I would leave the aluminum head unpainted though. They should clean up nicely. Maybe others will chime in and give there advise and thoughts in that area.

I had no idea how I was going to paint the fender. Ended up bolt it to a log so I could paint both sides.

A wire hanging from something usually works for me.

Turned okay great for being extremely rusty. Anyone else notice this part rusting a lot? It's the worst bit of rust on the tractor.
