Bought a 1450
3 Attachment(s)
I just picked up a 1977 1450 with a 44” deck. The guy said he bought it 3 years ago and it has been very reliable, but it does need some work. It seems to run good with no smoke. Everything works. It shakes a lot, but from what I’ve read, some shaking is normal. The motor feels pretty solid.

It needs a good cleaning. The rear has about a quarter inch of dirt on it. When I pulled the air cleaner off, it was full of corn. I’m going to pull the motor and check the tins for mouse nests or other debris.
|
Good deal! 1450's a nice machine. :beerchug:

Excess shaking can be bad motor mounts, and/or worn driveline because of worn motor mounts. I put new ones in mine when I had it and it made a world of difference. That coating over the hydro looks like a leak to me.

If your motor mounts are worn you likely have loose or missing bolts holding the engine to the cradle as well, and if they’re really bad the cradle is probably slapping against the cross member under it. I saw all of this with my 1250. Part of the oil pan was even worn away.
|
I can rock the motor a little, about a quarter inch. I would think some movement is normal, but don’t know what would be too much.
|
Seems like a lot. But I don’t know either how much is “normal”.

I tried mowing with it for a couple minutes today. A couple things I noticed:
1. It seems to run hot, the hood was too hot to touch after a few minutes. I’m going to check the engine tins for a mouse nest or grass buildup. Is there any other reasons it could be running so hot? 2. The drive lever is really touchy, but I think it is just tightened too much. 3. There is quite a bit of whining from the hydro, more than my others. I will change the fluid and filter after I fix the leak(s). Hopefully that fixes it. Other than that, everything seems pretty good. It mows nice, the engine sounds good, the hydraulic lift works good. I’m going to pressure wash it tomorrow or Sunday, then begin making some repairs. |
1450
nice :biggrin2:
your on the way to getting it sorted ... ive enjoyed mine...you will also B. |
Do you have the heat shields around the muffler?

That’s probably your heat issue.

Also, I will have to find and fix this leak before I start using this. Hopefully it is something easy. |
I might have one laying around. I also have good motor mounts I bought for mine and only used them a little before deciding to part the tractor out.

I pulled the motor today. The two right side mounting bolts were missing, which was probably causing most of the shaking.
I have more pressure washing to do, check the driveshaft, the cradle upgrade, and change the hydro fluid and filter. |
Missing bolts with get it shakin' and bakin'. Hopefully all four mounting bolts and those parts I sent you will help you out a lot.

I got the cradle welded today, now I can start putting it back together. The motor mounts were definitely in need of replacement.
|
Wow. They’re shot.

I’m getting ready to put this back together. I have a question about the motor mounts. All 8 of the original ones have a metal insert, but only 4 of the new ones do. Which one would go on the top, and which one on the bottom? Do the ones without the insert need washers?
|
I don't know the answer for certain. I only had the metal inserts on the bottom, the top had washers. The original mounts were hollow inside and had a molded in metal washer at the top. I think those are to keep the weight of the engine from rubbing the rubber against the bolt and wearing into the rubber. Those are these mounts: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20101799130...m=201017991308 and I shot the seller a message for clarification. I'll post back when I hear something.
|
The seller replied, yes you want to use the metal insert in all 8. I did not have 8... :HeadScratch:

Looks good. Get ready for a party when trying to get those engine bolts in. I had a heck of a time with those ones through the cross member...
|
Some prefer to secure the cradle to engine, then set the assembly on the rubber mounts.
(put the snubbers on the cradle first, adjusting later) You have room to maneuver/install the mounts that might fall off during install. I found it easier that way, but others differ maybe. Be careful threading into the aluminum pan if you decide to install the cradle first, they are easily cross threaded, not a happy ending. :bash2: |

Blue lock tite on those oil pan bolts too. |
Looking good so far but did you put the snubbers on? I do not see them...
