Bought a 1450

I just picked up a 1977 1450 with a 44” deck. The guy said he bought it 3 years ago and it has been very reliable, but it does need some work. It seems to run good with no smoke. Everything works. It shakes a lot, but from what I’ve read, some shaking is normal. The motor feels pretty solid.

It needs a good cleaning. The rear has about a quarter inch of dirt on it. When I pulled the air cleaner off, it was full of corn. I’m going to pull the motor and check the tins for mouse nests or other debris.

Good deal! 1450's a nice machine. :beerchug:

sorner 06-28-2019 07:03 AM

Excess shaking can be bad motor mounts, and/or worn driveline because of worn motor mounts. I put new ones in mine when I had it and it made a world of difference. That coating over the hydro looks like a leak to me.

I’m going to check the motor mounts and driveshaft. Im most likely keeping this one, so it wouldn’t hurt to replace them anyway. I’m sure the hydro is leaking, but I don’t know where. The engine is also leaking.

sorner 06-28-2019 09:32 AM

If your motor mounts are worn you likely have loose or missing bolts holding the engine to the cradle as well, and if they’re really bad the cradle is probably slapping against the cross member under it. I saw all of this with my 1250. Part of the oil pan was even worn away.

IHCubCadet147 06-28-2019 09:44 AM

I can rock the motor a little, about a quarter inch. I would think some movement is normal, but don’t know what would be too much.

sorner 06-28-2019 09:57 AM

Seems like a lot. But I don’t know either how much is “normal”.

I’m going to pull the motor out next week and get a closer look. Hopefully they aren’t too bad.

IHCubCadet147 06-28-2019 08:38 PM

I tried mowing with it for a couple minutes today. A couple things I noticed:
1. It seems to run hot, the hood was too hot to touch after a few minutes. I’m going to check the engine tins for a mouse nest or grass buildup. Is there any other reasons it could be running so hot?
2. The drive lever is really touchy, but I think it is just tightened too much.
3. There is quite a bit of whining from the hydro, more than my others. I will change the fluid and filter after I fix the leak(s). Hopefully that fixes it.

Other than that, everything seems pretty good. It mows nice, the engine sounds good, the hydraulic lift works good. I’m going to pressure wash it tomorrow or Sunday, then begin making some repairs.

Do you have the heat shields around the muffler?

Thanks! This may end up being my favorite once I get everything fixed.

No, thanks for mentioning that. I just realized it is missing.

sorner 06-28-2019 09:28 PM

That’s probably your heat issue.

Probably. I will start looking for one.

Also, I will have to find and fix this leak before I start using this. Hopefully it is something easy.

sorner 06-29-2019 08:38 PM

I might have one laying around. I also have good motor mounts I bought for mine and only used them a little before deciding to part the tractor out.

I washed it today, now I can begin some repairs. The first two pictures are before, the rest are after.

I pulled the motor today. The two right side mounting bolts were missing, which was probably causing most of the shaking.

I have more pressure washing to do, check the driveshaft, the cradle upgrade, and change the hydro fluid and filter.

sorner 07-10-2019 11:23 PM

Missing bolts with get it shakin' and bakin'. Hopefully all four mounting bolts and those parts I sent you will help you out a lot.

They should help, we will see next week when I put it back together.

I got the cradle welded today, now I can start putting it back together. The motor mounts were definitely in need of replacement.

sorner 07-16-2019 10:23 PM

Wow. They’re shot.

Yep,
sum'en plum used all the good out of them rubber baby buggy bumpers fer sho' :biggrin2:
FYI.
Hope you firmly bolted the rails to the block before you welded the cross brace.
Most times they still "pull/draw so some tweeking is required.:bigthink:

I bolted an oil pan on to get the spacing right, clamped the cross brace on, then removed the pan and welded it. We’ll see tomorrow if it fits.

I’m getting ready to put this back together. I have a question about the motor mounts. All 8 of the original ones have a metal insert, but only 4 of the new ones do. Which one would go on the top, and which one on the bottom? Do the ones without the insert need washers?

sorner 07-22-2019 07:25 PM

I don't know the answer for certain. I only had the metal inserts on the bottom, the top had washers. The original mounts were hollow inside and had a molded in metal washer at the top. I think those are to keep the weight of the engine from rubbing the rubber against the bolt and wearing into the rubber. Those are these mounts: https://www.ebay.com/itm/20101799130...m=201017991308 and I shot the seller a message for clarification. I'll post back when I hear something.

sorner 07-22-2019 08:12 PM

The seller replied, yes you want to use the metal insert in all 8. I did not have 8... :HeadScratch:

Thanks! I got the cradle in, next up is the motor.

sorner 07-22-2019 10:17 PM

Looks good. Get ready for a party when trying to get those engine bolts in. I had a heck of a time with those ones through the cross member...

ol'George 07-23-2019 08:19 AM

Some prefer to secure the cradle to engine, then set the assembly on the rubber mounts.
(put the snubbers on the cradle first, adjusting later)
You have room to maneuver/install the mounts that might fall off during install.
I found it easier that way, but others differ maybe.

Be careful threading into the aluminum pan if you decide to install the cradle first, they are easily cross threaded, not a happy ending. :bash2:

Blue lock tite on those oil pan bolts too.

darkminion_17 07-23-2019 10:22 AM

Looking good so far but did you put the snubbers on? I do not see them...
