Mufflers
All rabid, loyal, die hard Cub lovers PLEASE move on?:biggrin2.gif:
I know that I am gonna make some eyes roll because i'm thinking of adding a Arnold type muffler to a Cadet. Cost is just downright cheap. Does any-one use these? Any opinions? Costs less than a six'er, soda that is. I really think they look GOOD, Nik, |
One of mine had one something like that when i bought it. I ran it that way for a while. I just like the tone of the stock mufflers better is the only reason i changed mine :biggrin2.gif:

I have a cheapie Arnold muffler like that on my 73, and I don't see anything wrong with it...sort of resembles the stock muffler for that tractor. I would think if it was on anything over say...8hp it might not be the best choice because of the small size of it. I saw a sizing chart for them somewhere, and I seem to remember that those style threaded mufflers aren't "rated" so to speak, for anything over 8hp.....would it work...probably...would it be loud...probably

I don't know, I've kinda been keeping my eyes open for a similar such muffler for one of my 70's. Haven't seen any locally, might have to order one from somewhere.
On the other hand I don't really care for the larger version, some of my other tractors had them when I got them, still I haven't got them all changed yet. |
Something to think about...when I went through a 100 last summer, I was trying to decide between a cheap muffler and the $15 Kohler one. I went with the Kohler one, and there's a HUGE quality difference. All of the cheap mufflers I've bought got rusty in 2 or 3 hours of run time. The Kohler one still looked new after that period. I sold the tractor, so I don't know what happened after that, but I really think it will last longer than any of the cheap mufflers. You get what you pay for.

Aren't the small pepper shaker mufflers for an "O", 70, 71... NLA?
|
i am in the process of cleaning and repairing the little things on my 125 and the old muffler was not in the best shape so i went the e pay route, 35 bucks delivered to my door i will pay so i will not having to deal with the parts person that can not find anything that was not made in the last decade :bash:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Muffler-Cub-Cade...item2eaeb1a8ae true it is aftermarket but i bolted it on and it looks and sounds good |
Like Jeff (teet), I run one of those on my 73 and it has worked fine for about a year now. I'm sure it isn't the best of the best (you do get what you pay for), but it will do for some time and that fit my needs.

cheap mufflers
i actually use 2 of the cheapie mufflers off of one pipe. plenty of room to work with, but depending on how you want to exit the tractor. im trying to get mine quiet. silent stealthy quiet. i have a plan but its trial and error, so it takes time and tribulations, so when i get it right i will share it. its not for the true restorers but for the quiet workhorses. anyway, the twin cheapies so far gets me riding without the wifey knowing half the time. if im putting around at idle... pretty good, i think.

I remember someone posting a small MINI BAFFLE welded to a stack with a flapper. I just gotta have that look, just cool looking.
So I bookmarked the source of that muffler & gonna put it on my # 109 & keep the # 122 original. Here's the MINI MUFFLER that i'm gonna have welded on to a stack. But whats a good source for those FLAPPERS??????? Our Local Tractor Supply Store carries the flappers. In fact they have a complete set up with muffler and pipe and flapper already fitted that I may make work on my 128.

Nik It was Scott that posted those here (murphycc). Those can be held in place by a screw or welded inside a 1 5/8 pipe. The 2 muffler shops I've went to don't want to bend a pipe for me so I'm still holding my $$$ until I find a shop that will make the bends for me.
What I like about them is you can get that straight pipe look without the noise. I love the flappers! DX3 is right TSC has them in stock. |

Been searching but can't find the original post from Scott? Duh? :bash2:
But I did find a exhaust & support made from a S.S. ladder from a pool. ---> http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=501 Nik |

here's a bunch of 1 inch pipe and fittings and the twin 3/4 inlet mufflers its such a pain to put this stuff together as you have to screw it all together and work in such a confined space. i never did get it very quiet with this setup, past idle. worst thing is taking it apart after heat and rust have done their teamwork. there is the stack for my 104. i made an aluminum tube threaded to fit exhaust port. it broke off after a while. now i am going to use the kohler cast iron bolt on manifold to mount this thing - plus bracing .. a definite must.
|
oh yeah
i added a pic of my 104 ... my endless project.
