Got My 104 today!

So, I found a 104 on craigslist. The ad said not running. Ad also said looking to trade for a mover deck for a 108.. I traded with him straight up 104 with deck for a deck and carriage with mule drive.

The seller delivered it this morning and picked up his deck. There was no spark plug in it .. He did not seem to know how long it had been out for. I vaced out the plug hole. Spun the motor by hand. Pulled the valve cover to check that everything was free, cleaned tank, carb, put a battery and plug in it.

It fired up pretty easily and ran well.. The muffler is toast so it was loud but not horrible.

Tim! I wish I was a member at that other site you have the viking up in for ugly tractor or whatever it was.. This might give it a run for its money! :biggrin2:

Also, I will get to try the easy off oven cleaner I think!

It is now lol.. The clutch was frozen. I started it in neutral of course, let it warm up. I stepped down and went to put it in first gear. Good thing I was only at 1/4 throttle. It popped into gear and started moving with foot still on clutch. No harm done. It startled me a little. Freed up the clutch pretty easily. Now it drives pretty good. All gears feel good. No funny noises. Will adjust the carb a bit more. Need to find a muffler now.

Good find, Coops! Lucky motor was free! Rear lift is a nice bonus! And it sure is an ugly runner!

Honestly, I was trading just becuase of the rear lift. The bonus to me is that it runs and moves.. :bigthink: now I gotta figure out what I want to do with it.

Nice pickup! It looks like it's in pretty good shape other than the red paint on it.

Yeah.. not bad.. not to much rust. Was just tooling around the yard with it... I'll keep it I guess:biggrin2:

Once you get the muffler fixed you might find a lot of strange noises.:bigthink:

Alvy 09-02-2018 07:51 PM

Looks good Coop. What are you lifting weights and working on cubs at the same time? I mean I knew you were a multi tasker but that takes it to a new level. :biggrin2:

Even with the muffler blown out it really was not overly loud which kind of surprised me. It sounded pretty good. I won't run it much like this until I have some sort of muffler and an oil change.

It wasn't perfect but it works. Much better than the original that blew out the end cap :biggrin2:

LOL! Well I will admit. It didn't actually blow out until I got it started and revved it up a little. My son wants me to put a stack on it. Not sure how I feel about that.

I'm not a fan of stacks due to the stress it can put on the engine block.

Your tractor, your choice :beerchug:

I just did a resto on my dads 104. Looking at pictures of yours, I just noticed something. The column on my dads is longer. Is it supposed to be? I saw that it was longer than my 125. I thought it was because one was a hydro one wasn’t.... I never looked at another 104 to compare.

zippy1 09-03-2018 12:19 AM

Good deal Coop.:beerchug: Sure beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.:bigthink:

Looks like it will be a good machine with some fine tuning. Just like my 124 is turning out to be (even though it's not very sightly).

Bill:

Good deal on the 104. Looks like a fun project.

Your 104 column looks long to me. I could be wrong. I am sure one of the more seasoned guys could tell us for sure but it looks like maybe it was replaced with one from a different model. My steering needs some work also.. Like all new steering lol

Thanks Roland! Yeah this may be the one to build over the winter. I'm liking it more and more!

If you are going to keep it and use it I would highly suggest this muffler.. it really cuts the edge off the noise and makes the 12hp in my 128 sound alot deeper. It's expensive but I won't ever go back to the original style after using this one!:beerchug:

Look's like a nice project Coop. I really like the 1x4 tractors and hope to restore one for myself some day. The best way to put a stack on a cub is to use an original style muffler in the correct location and simply extend the outlet, this way you won't be adding any stress to the block or elbow.

Is that the welded one from CC Specialties? 100 bucks or more seems excessive but I believe what you are saying to be true. Just don't know what direction I will be going with this tractor right now. I think Ill put the 20$ one on. If I decide to change it later I could always use the 20$ one on something else.

Yes Coop.. that is the welded muffler.. It's actually an OEM Cub Cadet part these days.. it's available from several suppliers.. i agree it's quite pricey.. I got lucky and got the one I have from Lew at a reduced price!:beerchug: It's on one of my chore tractors that I use quite a bit.. I don't blame you i'd go with the $20 muffler till you decide.. I wouldn't spend that much unless it was on a tractor that I used quite a bit!:beerchug:

Congrats on the 104!

jbrewer 09-06-2018 09:19 PM

Good deal Mr Coop. I love a tractor that shows it's age well!

Glad to see you've saved another one.
