2 Attachment(s)
I'm restoring a 169 for a friend and you guys can tag along on my adventure. Here's a short walk around video i made just to show its condition, since making this video it has been determined that i will be rebuilding the engine. My friend is also a new member here, his screen name is RLSpearman so if you see him posting be sure to give him a warm welcome.

New bolts???
May I ask why? A "restoration" with non authentic/original WP bolts??? |
Doesn't look too bad, just hit it with some Krylon and be done with it. :biggrin2:

1. Half the bolts have already been replaced and are all miss matched. 2. New bolts look better in my opinion and they help break up all the yellow and white 3. I like to work my tractors and this tractor will be worked and it's a pita having to touch up bolts anytime you need to work on it. 4. My time is valuable and I'm not gonna waste it messing around with old rusty bolts. I've been to alot of shows and received alot of compliments on my tractor's and not once has anybody said anything negative about the new bolts. It's a garden tractor, this isn't a concourse restoration on a 57 Chevy |

I'd also like to ask: Why you are not putting the original paint back on the tractor? All jokes aside, why WOULDN'T you replace the bolts? Especially ones that hold a load. When I tore down my 126, I had several in which the heads snapped off because it had sat in the rain for the past 20 years. What do you do then? I understand that folks want to "restore" to the best of their ability, but Tim stated this is going to be a working tractor. I wouldn't put it back together with the old hardware, and I would consider it work done in vain to do so, especially since this one is going to be working and not sitting in a garage under a sheet. But I guess we all have our opinions. Looking forward to seeing this thread progress. |

Regardless of all the banter, looks like a fun project Tim. Keep us posted on the progress.

Tim,
It looks like a nice complete tractor to do a restoration on, not too many parts to look for. As for the hardware, use whatever you want to get it back together. |

No problem, I just asked is all!!
Everyone has a 57 Chevy, at least last time I was at a car show. :biggrin2: |

Tim, if there are enough bolts worth keeping I will buy them from you. I would like to see if they can be cleaned up and re-plated.
|
Nice project. I'm sure it will look better than new when it's done.

Hopefully everything goes well for you Tim. Looking forward to the progress and updates.

Oak, Toss 'em into a jug of vinegar for a day or so, then give them the wire wheel treatment and they will look like new again.\I store them in a peanut butter jar with a little WW-40 to slosh them around in every so often.
They keep just fine 'til you are ready to pick one out and use it. I keep 2 containers, one for IH bolts and one for the w/p bolts. These are one of the 1st things I notice on a so called "restored" cub that's on display, that and how much "free play" or lack of it is in the steering assy, with the owners permission of course!! Saw a 169 at Portland last week, "restored" the front axle pin was about to fall out and the owner was in the process of switching the seat out for one that had arm rests commenting that they were worth $125 alone and then wanted to play the "whattle-ya-give-me for it" game. |
Honestly I'm with Tim. I think the guys who get hung up on the IH/WP bolt heads are getting a bit ridiculous. It's a bolt. As long as there is a bolt in place, it's irrelevant what is stamped on the head. I don't think a replaced fastener makes it less "restored" than one that has reworked original bolts. My time is worth more than the time it would take to blast and clean up a bunch of 3/8" bolts that you need a magnifying glass to see what's stamped on them anyway.
Next time I take out an IH or WP bolt, I'm keeping it. When I get a box full, I'm putting them up for sale for you boys to fight over. I'll use your money to buy 3 times the bolts I sold. |
I'll throw a rock at this hornets nest... what oil are you using in the hydro? :biggrin2:
|
I would like for the debate to end here before this thread gets locked. Everybody is entitled to an opinion and they've been voiced so now it's time to STFU and move on.
|
So to change the subject...
Do you have a timeline on this bad boy? Just curious to know how soon you are planning to get her all fixed up. Again, looking forward to seeing it progress. I know you said it was going to be a working model. Snow Removal or a Plow Horse? |
