149 Restoration

4 Attachment(s)
Since I am working on restoring my 149, I thought I would start a thread. I started it over the winter, but haven't had much time to work on it recently. Now I'm making progress on it again. I got all of the parts sandblasted and should have them in primer this afternoon or tomorrow. I'm working on sandblasting the frame, and should have that in primer next week. I'm hoping to get it painted next week or the week after. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions while I am putting it back together.

Here are some before pictures:

Here are some pictures of the frame before blasting. We used some paint stripper to get the heavy stuff off, now I'm sandblasting it.

J-Mech 06-13-2018 02:54 PM

Hope you stripped it down to the bare frame before blasting.....

I did not. I just stripped it to how it is in the pictures. Does it make a difference?

Well, yeah.... But it isn't my project, so whatever you want to do. :BlahBlah:
Hard to blast all the frame if all the frame isn't exposed. Also, that column and the transmission..... I'd be pretty leery blasting those parts. You can do it, but you have to be careful. Don't want to get sand in them. Then there is the hydraulics.... don't blast the chrome on the cylinder or the spool in the hydraulic valve. You really should completely disassemble it to blast. What you are doing isn't a "restoration". Not that that matters either.... just sayin.

IHCubCadet147 06-13-2018 03:31 PM

I covered everything that should not be blasted. Im going to clean the transmission and change the fluid. I'm not too worried about how the the inside of the frame looks where it will be covered, as long as the outside looks good.

Nice work so far.. Not for nuthin but.. Few more bolts and your down to bare frame. May I ask why not just go the distance? Might be nice in the future to know that "everything" was done when you had it that far apart. Really looks like the bulk of the job it done. Just sayin.. anyway its your baby. Best of luck with it.

I thought about taking the trans out, but decided not to. I would not be able to easily move it, and as long as it looks good from the outside, I'm not too worried about the stuff you won't see with the body on. It may not be the best, but it'll be good enough for me. It will definitely be better than it was before.

I dunno about that. I think it looked fine the was it was. That tractor would have been fine just painting the hoods and fenders. It wasn't bad at all.

It looks a lot better in the pictures. The yellow was brushed on, and it was painted a few times. The colors weren't right either. When I was sanding the fenders, I saw at least 3 different yellows. It definitely needed a full paint job.

Really? I never would have thought brush painted from the pics.

If it can make that tractor look that good, maybe it will do the same for girls. Go take some pics of ugly girls and show them to your buddies. Then introduce them to each other. :ExtremeFunny:

What's the best way to remove rust from the gas tank?

darkminion_17 06-14-2018 09:56 PM

Looking good, keep up the good work.

Muiatic acit or viniega works well.

I decided to take the transmission and steering column out and do it right.

Have you thought about hanging the pieces to paint, then you won't have to wait for one side to dry, before you can paint the other?:bigthink:

I could have, and probably will when I paint some of the other pieces. I used pressure cans on these, and it didn't take long to dry. The rest of the pieces are being done with regular paint.
