2 stage blower help

3 Attachment(s)
Just pickup up a 2165 with a 2 stage on it and the lift isn't working like it should. The blower doesn't come more than 2" off the ground. Wondering if this part I am posting a picture of is worn out or I should be looking for something else that's wrong. Any input is appreciated.

Go Here for the manual and enter model # 190-303-100

Alright I said forget that manual crap... I hooked it up a different way to make it work. Last issue I have is the auger gear box. The shaft spins going into it and the auger does not turn. Cheapest place to buy one?

darkminion_17 03-06-2018 02:54 PM

Cub Cadet still sells them, take it apart and see what you need, may just be a broken key. Try our sponsors, ebay, ad in wanted section for parts.

It was a key/the gear inside of it. I took it all apart, didn't plan to paint and clean it up till next year but here we are ahead of schedule :bash2:
Other needs include bushings, bearing, maybe a new shaft, the hole for the pin was shot... and maybe a new pulley, I dinged my a little getting it off, she was a rusty pos.

darkminion_17 03-06-2018 06:46 PM

Good job, P.O plolly hit a dead frozen animal and broke it.
I guess the guy who sold it to you didn't know it was broken.

Marko141 03-06-2018 07:46 PM

So I'm going to paint this while it's in pieces, and reference for paint? Rattle can works for me, any preference? Napa, TSC, etc. maybe a photo of the can you guys would use.

J-Mech 03-06-2018 08:05 PM

Unless you have someone cut you a new keyway slot in that shaft, better add "shaft" to the list of needed parts.

Edit: I guess you had it on your list.

On that rusty thing, unless you sandblast it, I'd use some Rustoleum rusty metal primer and whatever color of yellow is close. That's what powder coat does when it starts rusting underneath it! NASTY!

I believe the key way to be fine, the shear bolt hole has taken abuse. It's more of an oval now, the person before had an actually bolt and not holding it on which is what I think helped destroy the auger gear box.

Marko141 03-06-2018 08:14 PM

I'm ordering 2 shear bolts, one worm gear, which was in pieces, and one worm gear key.

717-0528 and 714-0161 for the worm gear and the key. Does this sound right?

I'm confused. The shear bolt, is a bolt. So.... what was in it?

Buddy, you can do whatever you want, but I'm not sure that I'd put any money into it. But, if that's what you want to do, go ahead. Yes, those parts are right. All you have to do is look at the pic and follow the numbers. Don't really need us to confirm do you?

Shear "bolt" is what is listed but it's a pin actually. Same style that is used in kingpins for the front on most small engine machines. And why not order the $40 worth of parts for the blower and try to get it working?

Do you think a running working cub cadet isnt worth less than $200?

The heavy wet snow that I have been getting is too much for my single stage thrower.

Saving a cub and also getting some experience.

Seems like a good deal to me and I'm sure I am not alone.

Parts book shows the shear pin for the auger to be a 5/16"-18 bolt with a nut. Unless you are talking about a different thing. Meh. I might throw $40 at the blower and maybe some paint.... but I am not sure it's worth $100 after all that. But, you never know what some people will buy. :biggrin2:
If it was me, I'd put the money in it and never be able to get it back out. This coming from a guy (me) with a 450 blower....

Not that one....

I don't buy that. I've used a single stage blower. It will eat anything you feed it. I've blown basically water out of one. Maybe yours isn't running fast enough, or you aren't operating it correctly.

Now, this isn't "wet" snow, but it was heavy snow:
You can tell how heavy it is, no farther than it's getting thrown.

Maybe, maybe not. I wouldn't consider that to be a "Cub Cadet" though. Just an MTD with shaft drive. Not trying to insult you. But I'm with Sam, I'd keep the engine....

Marko141 03-06-2018 11:40 PM

moving back to the topic... the 2 stage blower... not the tractor it is on...

I will wait for parts to come in and see if this blower will earn its keep. May just paint the entire thing black and be done with it.

What lubricant/grease/oil is everyone using in the auger gear box? And before anyone says check the manual let me say this... yes I can read the manual but if anyone would like to be helpful and provide some insight, it would be appreciated. Manuals are helpful but if that is where everyone is pointed to for information this site would be rendered useless. :HeadScratch: If you know the answer please help :biggrin2: if you are going to answer my question with a search recommendation or complain about my comments... well... :Choke:... make your own thread in the general discussion please. :biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

You can use JD cornhead grease, or get the lube from CCC, or you can make your own. That's what I do. I mix synthetic gear lube and Marathon Maraplex grease until I get the consistency of runny pudding. I have a post about it somewhere..... but I'm not going to go dig it up, lol.

Sooooo.
My post about the manual for your blower was not helpful?
Why do you think they have them?
Let me know how you feel...

Parts have finally started coming in! The pully came in today, all painted and rust free! Hopefully the rest will be in soon!

Keep up the good restoration of your snow blower. So many people on this website just like to try to prove they are smarter and better by belittling other peoples ideas or what they choose to repair. I got reamed out one spring when I asked questions about my 2 451 blowers, I was told to wait and fix my blowers in the fall. So,you decided to pay $40 in parts and repair your snow blower I agree with you and fix it! When you are done and having a beer with a smile on your face, you will know exactly how the blower works, and know how to fix it. Sounds like a low cost class with great benefit to me Don.:beerchug::beerchug:

Thanks for the motivation! I got a bunch of parts that came in, I decided to get all new bushing, bearings, and seals! I just have to paint the thing and then I can put it back together! Seeing all the boxes on the porch is like Christmas in March!

Marko141 03-13-2018 07:26 PM

The only other thing I truly need is a paint that matches or is close, other than the magic paint that everyone seems to hate I can not find anything, is there a rustoleum that is close? Idc if it says sunset yellow or honey yellow, if it's close I'll take it.

KayakDon 03-13-2018 09:24 PM

I don't know a good color match. I haven't bothered to paint my cubs. They are just for work. I saw the golf cart link on your last post. I have an old EZgo cart that is probably not worth fixing up, but I cant wait to dig into it and learn how it works and see if I can get it running. I'm sure that I will spend way more money on it than it is worth, but I sure will have fun with it, and IF I do get it to run and move will even be better! Not all hobbies need to be cost effective, just fun. Don

Follow the link under my name, it will take you to a forum that has lots of fun carts, I have rebuilt over 50 carts from the ground up, best thing to do if you really want to have some fun is to drop a vanguard in it. They are the best because they offer so many mods. Register for that, I have the same username there, I can help you from there with your cart. I don't want to blow up this forum with non cub cadet stuff:beerchug:

Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover - Marigold.
It is not a perfect match but very close to Cub yellow.
Best part is it's cheap and can get it everywhere.
Go here, check yellow, Marigold at bottom.

That's what I will be getting then, close enough eventually the entire tractor will be the same color, I'm sure most people will never know the difference.
