Model 2 tiller help

6 Attachment(s)
Over the winter I aquired a cub cadet 127 with a model 2 tiller, mule drive , and gear box. The guy had it all hooked up once but it was taken off when I got it and being new to this I am unsure how it should all fit together. My main concern being that I started to remove the bolts to hook the gear box up because I thought it would be easy and at that time oil started to come out of the bolt holes. I'll attach some photos, the oil looks ruff and I hate doing things twice so if some of you have some photos that would help. I may also need a new gasket and a reference on what oil to use in the rear end. Thanks for the help.

That will happen.
Sounds like it's time for a new gasket, easy to make with a sheet of gasket mat'l available at any auto parts store.
Was it showing signs of leaking there before you removed the bolts?

Other than draining the rear end, if you have a lift table or some other way to elevate the rear of the tractor, it's easy to do by running the front wheels off the table and securing the tractor to the table w/the rear wheels on the end and slowly raise the table high enough so the fluid will not run out once the cover is removed.

But then you may get lucky and install the gear box and not have a leak once it is tightened back up.

DO NOT overtighten the bolts and DO NOT use bolts that are too long or risk breaking the tapped holes as they re dead end. If you break the end out inside the case you will then have BIG problems to contend with.

There was no signs of leaking before, just when I removed the bolts. But that rear end oil looks nasty and would be a good idea to take it off and clean everything out, spray it with some cleaner and what not. But I was wondering if there was a gasket I could buy that was made for this rear end. Also wondering on what oil everyone uses in their rear ends.

Got lucky and the local shop sold me one for $16.63, saves me the trouble of tracking stuff down. Now I need a filter, oil, and figure out how to hook the tiller up.

Marko141 02-26-2018 01:37 PM

I need 7 quarts of the Hy-Tran oil and a filter, where is the best place to get it?

I am just looking for 7 quarts and not paying a bunch:bigeyes:

Pick up a Wix 51410 filter, or a Napa 1410, or a filter from CCC, or IH. Not all filters meet the spec, but all the ones I listed do.

This is what I use from TSC. Never had any problems but I do change it about every two years.

Awesome! That is what I am looking for! I know this thread kinda got off topic but it came up during the process of equipping my tiller. Still would not mind a diagram or photos of a tiller setup if someone has one.

There are directions here....

That's all I needed for now, try and get some more done tomorrow morning. Maybe clean up that gear box, once it goes on I don't think I'll be taking it off anymore, no use for anything else on the rear in the near future.

J-Mech 02-26-2018 06:42 PM

I'd pop the lid off the gearbox and at least check the lube in it. Wouldn't hurt to change it.

I use silicone on the gearbox lid. I use silicone on the rear cover too. :biggrin2:

Marko141 02-26-2018 10:57 PM

I may take a look at the gear box also, I'm a stickler for the gaskets so we will see what happens:biggrin2:

J-Mech 02-26-2018 11:53 PM

The gasket the box had was cork. Don't get too upset about using gaskets. Silicone seals it up better than the junk cork did.

I ended up fining this for the tiller. Gives belt size and gasket reference for the tiller, everything match up to you guys?

Looks like the same doc hosted on this site (OCC)....

It's a copy of the CPE-2 parts book, section J.

Marko141 02-27-2018 12:05 AM

Next time I am at work or on campus I will have lots of things to print off, I like paper copies, seems to be easier to look at.

J-Mech 02-27-2018 12:10 AM

If you like paper copies, just buy the book. It has all the sections in it....
I have one. :biggrin2:

Look on ebay. I can't do it all.... :biggrin2:

Speaking of paper copy, I just bought two manuals I was looking for on Ebay. Pays to shop. I got two copies of it for about $7, shipping and all. Hunt around. Don't buy the first one you see. You might get a better deal on that CPE-2 book. Not many for sale now. I got mine for about $30/32 with shipping. Worth it though. Has ALL the part numbers, unlike the digital version.

Cant beat that. Fresh print.

I was always told to not use an impact wrench to tighten the bolts. Although you can only access 3 of the 4 tiller bracket bolts with one............
