Just picked up my first IH cub cadet. Model 147. Let the work begin.

darkminion_17 02-19-2018 02:52 PM

Nice find and you gotta love that big P.O. mod on the lift handle.
Did it come with any extra parts?

IHscout79 02-19-2018 02:55 PM

2 belts for the drive train

Dirty Steve 02-19-2018 03:08 PM

Congrats on your first one! Good luck with making it your own!:beerchug:

Question, what is this and how should it be mounted?

IHscout79 02-19-2018 07:57 PM

Also, where can I get a starter/generator from?

drglinski 02-19-2018 07:59 PM

That's a voltage regulator. Sorta important to making the engine run. It's where it's supposed to be, but it's should be mounted more square with the rest of the frame.

There is potential under there; what was the person thinking with the fenders....:bash2::bash:

Check with the sponsors listed above.

IHscout79 02-19-2018 08:51 PM

Thanks for the info!

J-Mech 02-19-2018 08:58 PM

You may not need a S/G if the issue is it isn't charging. That is not the correct v-reg. Probably why it isn't mounted right.

Have the old S/G rebuilt. No need to buy another unless the one you have isn't fixable.

That tractor doesn't have drivetrain belts. Do you mean deck drive belts?

IHscout79 02-19-2018 09:44 PM

Ok. Thanks for the info. Yes you are correct, the belts are for the lawn deck.

IHscout79 02-19-2018 09:48 PM

I am need of a proper voltage regular and how it is mounted. Pictures is a plus.

J-Mech 02-19-2018 10:12 PM

It mounts on the bracket that the wrong one is mounted to.... only it fits.

Here is the parts book. If you don't like CCC's price, a local auto part store can get you a replacement. You can use this site to look up your own part numbers. Go to the line marked "assembly" and click the drop down menu to look at different assembly groups. Bookmark the page so you can find it.

While you are at it, download the chassis and engine manuals from the tech section on this site. They should answer most of your repair questions. If not, then feel free to ask. If you can't find the manuals, say so and we can point you to them.

Thanks Jonathon.

What is this switch for?

Here's the only pic I could find of my 147's VR before teardown (plus a couple others I found on the interwebs). The correct one should mount with the hardware in the vertical, on that angled bracket. Don't fool around with this mounting, and make sure to secure it top and bottom. In a careless moment I test drove my tractor with just one of the VR bolts in. Vibration caused it to swing down, ground out and almost instantly set the wiring harness on fire.

Headlights. Mine was really frozen up until I got some graphite worked in.

IHscout79 02-20-2018 02:53 PM

I was thinking that but, wasn’t sure. Thanks for your help.

Also, I was wanting to replace my carburetor. Would you recommend this:

J-Mech 02-20-2018 03:24 PM

Rebuild the old one. Unless the throttle shaft bore is shot, I'd rebuild it.

IHscout79 02-20-2018 03:30 PM

How would I know if the throttle shaft bore is shot? I am assuming it is not.

Might wiggle like this one. :bigthink:

IHscout79 02-20-2018 04:14 PM

Wow! What you can find on YouTube! Thanks Steve!

I'll have to check my carb after a good cleaning of the motor.

Also, can I go to my local auto parts store and get the rebuild parts? Do I say its for a K321 motor?

You might be able to order them through NAPA, but there are many sources on the net to order them. ccspecialties.org or ihcccw.com is where I usually buy parts, but partstree.com, cubcadet.com and many other places sell parts for these tractors.

Here is a helpful cross reference list that another member compiled of parts you can get at NAPA....

IHscout79 02-21-2018 10:23 AM

Thanks again for your help. Didn’t see any cross reference number for the carburetor rebuild kit.
But, that will help me for my regulator and coil/condenser.

sir_lancealot 02-21-2018 05:45 PM

I buy my carb kits from Amazon. They get here in 2 days and are very reasonably priced.

Rmowl 02-21-2018 06:29 PM

Nice 147. Amazon is where I get all my parts from as well. Carb kits, sediment bowls, petcocks, whatever they have it, two day free shipping w the prime account is unbeatable. I ordered some PAR36 bulbs last Friday and they showed up the next day

IHscout79 02-21-2018 09:26 PM

Cool. Thanks guys!

ironman 02-22-2018 09:53 AM

I just ordered this. Probably not Kohler original but how can you beat the price?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-CARBURETO...53.m1438.l2649

J-Mech 02-22-2018 10:26 AM

I can't beat the price, but match it. My local O'Reilly's sells them to me for that same price. No shipping... and they deliver to me. :biggrin2:

Prime Line part number: 7-02024

EDIT: Nevermind.... there are two kits that for price. Nope. Can't beat that!!! Great deal!

Tear down begins. Pressure washing is near.

J-Mech 02-25-2018 08:41 PM

Pretty cool how you stood it up on its nose like that.....

Just pressure washed it. Next, rims sandblasted and powder coated while engine electrical parts come in.

Because you aren't holding the phone correctly when you take the pic. Rotate the phone to the left to take a wide shot. Make sure the phone is upright when taking a tall shot.
