CH680-3107 New, wont stay running, 2284 tractor

New 22.5 engine complete, Fires and runs for one second, Only when accelerator is moved from low to high, then dies. battery hooked up correct, plenty of fuel from pump, tank full, all wiring fit and connected. Oil full to the mark. Any ideas of where to check first?

You state the engine is brand new. I am assuming you have documents that came with the engine, to include Installation Instructions. With that in mind, did it supply you with and Electrical Diagram...??

The Kohler Command had four Ignition Options:
(A) Standard Fixed
(B) Smart Spark
(C) Smart Spark Advanced
(D) Digital Spark Advance Ignition, DSAI

As best as I can see, your engine is (A)...????

no install papers, No diagrams. But it fit perfect. I checked the wiring from old engine and every wire is the same, best I could tell without pulling engine., I checked low pressure oil wire, it goes to same place in harness.

ginsenger 07-16-2017 11:02 AM

It seems as if I pump a shot of fuel by working the accelerator

R Bedell 07-16-2017 11:05 AM

It sounds like you have a Fuel Delivery issue.

SO....you just plugged this new engine connector into the 2284 wiring harness connector...??

:bigthink:

ginsenger 07-16-2017 11:15 AM

yes, all connectors were the same and same number of wires.I just looked again, red purple, green, blue, and white wires running to the connector from the engine side . On the old engine the purple wire is cut. it runs back to the solid state ign. on lower side of engine

R Bedell 07-16-2017 11:17 AM

Can you snap a few Pictures of the Engine Connector, both front and back. Also snap a picture of the 2284 Wiring Harness Connector showing the wire colors, and post it here..??

ginsenger 07-16-2017 11:34 AM

ok, am starting to see a difference. not sure which one i have now

Using a test light, It doesn't appear to be getting current to the fuel shutoff valve at the carb. Ran a hot wire from battery to carb, it ran... now where to either find the open or splice into hot wire when key on run.

Since the engine is new, you will have to make a modification to the Tractor Harness connector to get this engine to run.

The Tractor Harness connector has Female Quick Disconnect Terminals with Locking Tabs inside the Molex Plug. They look like this......

You will have to go into the Molex Plug with something like a Large Hat Pin and push down on the locking tab of the connector to remove the wire(s).....like this.....

You need to remove the Red and Red/White wires and relocate them to these positions in the Tractor Connector Molex plug.

You will need to "ADD" a wire. Locally acquire (ie: Napa) a Female Quick Disconnect Terminal with Locking Tab (14-16GA) Crimp Connector.

Acquire some 14 Gauge Wire (I used Purple in the Diagram), say 3 feet.

Attach the terminal (crimp or solder) on one end of the wire in install it into the position as indicated (Purple wire). The other end of this wire needs to been connected to the "R" terminal of the 2284 Ignition Switch. Whether you splice in or use another Female QD and piggy back is up to you (red/white wire).

IF....You are using the Oil Light, then relocate the Black Wire to the position as indicated.

This slight modification should get your new engine to run in your 2284.

Thank You so much, saved me a ton of researching and time. I got it to run today just by running a hotwire to carb. sol. Haven't mowed for 2 weeks. it mowed well for hrs. One local friend suggested I "Fix" the solenoid so it was useless. I don't want to do that,. Its brand new, I just paid good money for it and if I don't kill the current to it before I shut it down it diesels a good bit. Fixing it right, as you have shown me how, is what I will do. Thanks again.
