Time to rescue this 1650

I have had a 1450 for years, and needed some parts, so I answered a Craigslist add for parts, and went to pick them up. While I was there, I saw this poor 1650 just rotting away in a pile of garbage behind the house. I asked the owner what he was doing with it, and he said it was a lost cause. $300 later, this poor neglected 1650 was headed home with me.

Right away it is clear to me the front axle pin is loose, and the front axle is rocked forward. The engine turned, so I put a battery in there, and gave her some fuel, and she fired up!! Can't kill a Kohler!

My strategy is to tear it down methodically, and compile a list of replacement parts I will need. I really don't know how healthy the engine is, but I don't see myself rebuilding it.

Rear PTO. I am pretty excited about this. I have a pretty good bit of property that needs attention.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53456619-L.jpg

I do have sides from a 1450 that I had gotten for parts in the past, so I will be able to repurpose those here.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53509455-M.jpg

I'm pretty sure I need a new seat. :D

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53515181-M.jpg

Looking very faded and rough. The steering has a ton of slop.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...0453_HDR-M.jpg

The drive fan is obliterated, and the tunnel cover is gone. I am sure I have one around here some where, but I will need to order the fan.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53524578-M.jpg

To the heart of the matter. The fuel tank is gross, and has a layer of shellac in it. I think I will need to replace it.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53534196-M.jpg

New rubber? Yeah, no doubt. Front and rear are rotted.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53604047-M.jpg

AndyCap 05-14-2017 11:46 PM

No doubt this carb will need to be rebuilt, or get a very serious cleaning. I'll need to get the air filter cover and breather hose.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...53629378-M.jpg

A closer look at the tank, and the missing firewall.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...2119_HDR-M.jpg

Off comes the hood.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1232-M.jpg

Serial Number - I guess this is important.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1235-M.jpg

Front grill removed

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1237-M.jpg

The muffler actually looks solid! It appears the mice that called this area home took good care of it.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1239-M.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1241-M.jpg

Fuel tank and brackets removed.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1248-M.jpg

Pulled the muffler. Engine looks like it would have over heated if I ran it somehow.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1252-M.jpg

AndyCap 05-14-2017 11:47 PM

Yep, definitely some mouse storage here.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1256-M.jpg

The wiring looks good, surprising considering all the mouse history. I have a new wiring harness sitting in my shed, so, it will get new wiring anyway. This stuff is pretty brittle.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1259-M.jpg

Dash without the steering wheel. Can you read those gauges? lol After a bit of polishing, and using a flashlight, I can read the hour meter, barely. 520 hours?

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...IMGP1262-M.jpg

Disconnecting the hydraulic lift. I broke a link holder. :( I'm sure I can find these someplace.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...0581_HDR-L.jpg

Console removed. The steering box is slop, it definitely needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...686_HDR-X2.jpg

Engine removed.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...90411602-M.jpg

Engine compartment is an oily mess, and the right side motor mounts are shot.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...90455341-M.jpg

This motor mount is cooked.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...90719418-M.jpg

Another shot mount. Every mount on the right side was cooked.

AndyCap 05-14-2017 11:48 PM

The axle pin isn't poking through. The frame was widened so the axle is no longer just cantilevered. It rocks forward and back.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...90855144-M.jpg

Axle and pin out. The roll pin was sheared and the axle pin was not all the way in.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...93440156-M.jpg

That's where it is at tonight. Tomorrow, I am going to clean up the engine, and start looking at the rear end.

DeltaCub 05-15-2017 12:36 AM

Looks like a great tractor to save! Nice find with lot's of goodies. :beerchug:

Bob95065 05-15-2017 12:52 AM

That isnt a rear PTO. You have a tiller 90 degree gearbox at the rear of your tractor.

It does have dual hydraulics meaning it has ports in front for a hydraulic Angie blade. This is a rare option. Also the three point sleeve hitch is presen in the rear of the tractor. Nice score!

zippy1 05-15-2017 01:09 AM

Congrats on the dual stick, nice addition.:beerchug:
Find yourself a tiller, and you'll be golden.:bigthink: Good amount of work done today, by this time tomorrow, you should have it painted and working the garden.:biggrin2::bigeyes:

bkw3614 05-15-2017 02:44 AM

Nice score! Everything you have shown in your pictures looks to me to be fixable. It looks like oyu have yourself a nice and desirable tractor.

That axle problem isn't that hard; if I can do that, anyone can. I hope the pin bushings aren't wallowed out.

Quietlines are great tractors!

Dirty Steve 05-15-2017 05:47 AM

$300 sounded steep at first. But with the rear lift, dual hydro, and rear 90 gear box? Ya done good! :beerchug:

cubcadet 05-15-2017 07:39 AM

Good deal on the 1650.

Oak 05-15-2017 09:01 AM

Great job on the twin stick 1650.:beerchug: + you got 2 good original tail lights. That was also a good days work with great pics.

I'll be

PACubCadet 05-15-2017 10:54 AM

Good score.:biggrin2:

PO probably didn't know much about it otherwise he would've asked a little more. Love the progress pictures, what you did in one day would take me two weeks to accomplish...

AndyCap 05-16-2017 12:37 AM

I got a little bit of work done today. It appears the drive shaft has a bearing it is supposed to sit in on the engine side, but that wasn't really the way this one was anymore. It appears the housing for the bearing wore out, and the bearing fell out. Then the end of the drive shaft wore uneven. I bet this created a ton of vibration.

So it appears, (using my terminology) I need a new drive shaft rod, a new input bracket and bearing. The good news is, I discovered I already have all the engine mounts. I don't know when I bought them, but I found a baggie with 8 mounts in it! Bonus!

I cleaned the axle cross member, and the frame a bit just to see how it all looked. Other than the fact that it looks like the previous owner must have hit some pretty intense stuff with it, it looks good. The axle pin shows a bit a wear that leaves me uncomfortable using it again, so I think I need another.

I confirmed that this was the right engine. It does look like someone did some work on this machine before, the over spray from the paint is a bit of a giveaway.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...30352225-M.jpg

The underside of the axle crossmember. This is all cast iron. The chunks out of it are pretty serious. Maybe this is why the roll pin in the axle pin was sheered.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...72434987-M.jpg

The frame looks clean, but there is some wear from the axle hitting the frame.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...2445322-X2.jpg

Input on the engine where the drive shaft goes in. There should be a bearing sitting in that hole, but it looks like it is out of round, and the bearing fell in.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...62715983-M.jpg

I took that bearing housing off, and there is the bearing.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...62752432-M.jpg

The end of the drive shaft that should have been in the bearing, but instead was moving all about.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...63417194-M.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...63436328-M.jpg

The inside of the frame has a good chunk out of it too. Man the previous owner was pretty rough on this thing.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...72518834-M.jpg

AndyCap 05-20-2017 12:00 AM

Back at it again today. The focus is to get the slop out of the steering box.

The hydraulic valve body is mounted to the steering column.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...44407337-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...44413674-L.jpg

Column is out. Time to take a look.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...45751951-L.jpg

Well, I can see they greased it. I looks dirty and nasty, but it is a good sign. It's mostly grease. Some previous owner left plenty of grease on all the grease fittings.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...45851432-L.jpg

Now peek inside the steering box. I looks ok inside. Plenty of grease, no sign of water or anything else getting in there.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...45851432-L.jpg

The pin that goes in to the gear on the steering box is definitely warn.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...51144657-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...51514886-L.jpg

Well, off to order some parts. A new pin, a gasket, and good to go.

twoton 05-20-2017 07:57 AM

Lookin' good there AndyCap, keep the updates coming!

john hall 05-20-2017 07:58 AM

I think the grooves in the underside of the axle are from mule drive idler pulleys. Seems we had a 129 with those in it. I guess somebody ran it with a stretched or too long belt.

dale c. 05-20-2017 08:45 AM

the notches in the axle are from having a belt that was too short.. the wear in the frame is from the motor mounts being shot

Garyoh5a 05-20-2017 09:52 AM

Never give up!

Great deal....I once found a 1650 the guy was going to take to scrap yard. Got it for $50, new plug, fresh gas fired up and I'm using it today to drive my 1A tiller
Interesting how some people give up on these wonderful tractors.
Getting a 1450 with extra set of liquid filled ag tires, qa42 snow thrower,50" Mowrer deck and extra parts today. And get this, the guys delivering it over an hour away to my house for $375 for that package! No way I could pass that deal up even though I have 5 sitting in my shop.
He heard from a friend I rescue them, and so the deal was made.
You'll love your new find...easy to fix all your problems on it! Never give up on a Cub

Bamafan 05-20-2017 12:11 PM

Very informative keep us posted :beerchug:

drglinski 05-21-2017 08:20 AM

I love how you've documented everything with photos. It's fun to watch the progress. Good save on the 1650, what with the tiller gear box and the dual hydraulic stick option. Keep it up! :beerchug:

darkminion_17 05-21-2017 11:24 AM

Seems like your go at it attitude is keeping you busy, but in the end you will be rewarded with a great tractor.

AndyCap 05-21-2017 08:16 PM

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement. I feel I need to get in to the hydraulics, but have no experience with them. How difficult or sensitive are they to drain, fill, etc? In other words, if I start disconnecting hoses, am I going to get in over my head?

I have a couple of jugs of new Cub Cadet hydro fluid. I figure at the very least I should drain and put new fluid in. I really would like to remove the hydraulics for now, and power wash the frame, apply the new wiring harness, and the start reassembling, but as I wrote, I have never dealt with hydraulics or even the transmission before.

olds45512 05-21-2017 08:24 PM

The pump is self priming so you won't have an issue if you unhook the lines. Be sure to put caps over the ports on the rearend to keep dirt out.

DieselDoctor 05-21-2017 11:12 PM

You're doing great so far. Just remember that dirt is the number one enemy to hydraulics. As Tim stated, if you remove lines make sure to keep dirt out. It may be better to power wash once with the hydraulic system intact and all lines connected, to remove as much crud as possible. Then remove the lines and valve, cap off the pump and wash the frame and rear again carefully. I'd also recommend pulling the diff cover and cleaning out the differential housing as well. You've got a really nice project there. I'd love to have a 1650 with those options.

That's great to hear. Thank you. I will also read up on it a bit, but the self priming bit is very reassuring.

The replacement parts are starting to trickle in. I also found some parts at a neighbor's. Pretty soon, I should be able to start my reassembly.

The drive shaft I ordered off eBay came it, but sadly the transmission fan lost a couple of blades in shipping. The plastic is brittle, and it wasn't packed to handle the beating the shipping people give it. Thankfully the seller backed it and said he would reimburse me for the replacement fan I had to order. I will still need to remove the roll pins and flanges to get the new fan on, but I am hoping it won't be as brittle. The fan should be in Tuesday, I hope.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...72504541-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...72443307-L.jpg

The complete wiring harness. I should be able to start on this right away.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13915534-M.jpg

Complete gasket kit for the engine. I don't plan on doing a rebuild of the engine, but I will replace what gaskets I can without really getting in to it. The oil pan definitely has a leak, so this should solve that.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13735218-M.jpg

I had a bag on engine mounts already, but forgot that, so I ordered some, and then found the other bag. Plenty to go around now!

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13759041-M.jpg

Axle pin. This was the thing that brought the tractor in to my garage. The front axle was all over the place because the roll pin that held the original sheered, and the axle pin slid out, allowing the cross member to move all over.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13814868-M.jpg

And of course, the adjustment pin for the steering box. I could have stayed with the original, and turned it a bit, but it would have warn down sooner than later. This way I have a new replacement in there, and should get years of good use.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13851852-M.jpg

I'm still waiting for the end flange that the drive shaft goes in to on the engine, and a couple other little baubles.

AndyCap 05-30-2017 11:10 PM

Two more parts came in today.

Transmission fan. Nice!

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13530001-M.jpg

Drive shaft flange.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...13655847-M.jpg

Almost ready to start reassembly. :beerchug:

AndyCap 06-03-2017 09:49 PM

I had a bit of time to bang out some more work on this project. First, I think I will deal with the drive shaft, and hydro fan. To replace the fan, I will need to drive out the roll pin, and take the flange off, then remove the c-clip from the fan, and slide the fan off, and reassemble.

The flange is a bit loose. The roll pin appears to be worn. Knocking the roll pin out using a punch.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...83940180-M.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...84009769-M.jpg

Image on the right is the flange and roll pin from the shaft I bought. The roll pin is shot, but I can use the roll pin from the other shaft.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...85504695-M.jpg

Extract the C-Clip, and slide the fan off. I think I will sand and paint the whole thing before putting the fan on.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...83757780-M.jpg

AndyCap 06-03-2017 10:06 PM

Next I need to address the steering box. The gear, and bearings are fine. I just need to replace the pin.

The Old Pin and the New Pin. I'll let you guess which is which.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...91142602-L.jpg

New Pin installed, and tested. Zero slop in the steering! Yep, It's going to need to get sanded and painted too. Plus, I need to shoot the steering box full of grease, but it's solid now.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...6718_HDR-M.jpg

AndyCap 06-03-2017 10:37 PM

On to the engine. It has served as home to mice and other little beasts for a while now. Time to evict, and clean up.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...4772_HDR-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...1440_HDR-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...8748_HDR-L.jpg

I took the front shrouding off, and look what I found, a little nest. Time for this to go.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...7053_HDR-M.jpg

Oh boy is this filthy.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...3823_HDR-M.jpg

Starter side. I took the starter off, and yeah, it's dirty here too.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...5394_HDR-L.jpg

And the front of the engine.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...8269_HDR-L.jpg

A bit cleaner. I am getting all the crap out of the fins, and wire brushing it. Then I will take it outside, and and power wash it before I through some paint on it.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorized...4864_HDR-L.jpg

I still have a lot of cleaning to do, but the Stanley Cup is on.

zippy1 06-03-2017 10:59 PM

Let the resurrection begin.:beerchug:
Do you have compressed air, air compressor? Just blow the engine clean first to see if you can get it good enough that way. If not, just remember, "most" times the points get wet, and will need attention, also the water can make bare metal rust pretty fast...
Are you pulling the head gasket? Would be a good time to de-carb the head.:bigthink: Good luck.:beerchug:

Absolutely. I used compressed air to clear it out. I have a full gasket kit for the engine. I don't want to get in and do a rebuild, but I do plan on replacing the head gasket for sure.

Looks like a very good project tractor! I love the dual stick ql tractors, especially the 1650. They can be super awesome when done right. Good luck!:beerchug:

dodge trucker 06-04-2017 01:57 PM

yeah, I have a 1650 as well, that I got w/o an engine.... got with a package deal, along with the 1200 that I am currently in the middle of the engine rebuild on... originally I thought I was gonna pull the hydraulic lift from and transplant onto my 129,,,,,, but the more I think about it, I think it's worth finding an engine for, been looking. All the Kohlers I have been coming across lately have been the standard base though.... and NO 14s or 16s have come available locally recently other than vertical shaft ones :bash2:
and those are certainly no good....

AndyCap 06-06-2017 01:29 PM

Yeah, I guess these engines are pretty hard to find. I have a 14HP as well, but it is in the 1450 I own, and would rather not cannibalize it. I see 1450's and 1650's come along on Craigslist now and then. It seems that is the best bet. Hope to find one with a good engine, but shot frame or something.

olds45512 06-06-2017 01:36 PM

How many 16's do you guys need, I can sell them individually or in bulk.

dodge trucker 06-06-2017 02:34 PM

I could use 1 complete one That is rebuildable .
