"Podunk", ill is a great place to live.

At least here I got an education and can type in complete sentences, and use capital letters where they belong.

Long story short its a gizmo you hold between two fingers and spin it real fast--made of plastic with some pretty decent bearings. It is a tool developed to help children with ADHD. Turns out kids without that disorder enjoy playing with them, so it has ballooned into a toy instead of a medical "tool". The craze has gotten so widespread that many schools are banning them due to the distraction.

I think my whole family would like one. Every year when we get the corn planter out, Dad and my son are amazed at how long the press wheels coast. I swear a couple of them will coast for 5 minutes. But what do you expect, its an IH machine.:biggrin2:

cadzag72 05-05-2017 06:48 PM

I teach middle schoolers, and they are at craze level now, to the point where some of my more mechanically talented students are modifying them to spin longer. I myself like them because I used to reach at a school for autism and they would be very useful there; however, I do see the side of banning them because standing in front of a room filled with them is like being in a snake pit with all the hissing bearings. Being a WW1 aviation nut, I like to use them to explain how gyroscopic forces affected WW1 pilots with rotary-engined planes. Anyone interested in a really cool engine, search YouTube for "Gnome rotary" or "le Rhone rotary" to see what I mean. I'm not talking Wankels here, these things the entire engine spins around a stationary crankshaft. To cut a rambly post back to the point, airplanes with these engines would naturally dive somewhat when turning right and climb when turning left, so as a pilot you had to be ready for that. These spinners are a cool hands-on way to demonstrate that tendency without so many words.

We must be really bored...... I can't believe this thread has 29, or....30 posts.

When I was a kid, they didn't ban things. The teacher just collected whatever "toy" you were playing with and gave it back to you at the end of the day. No need for a ban. Stand at the door to the classroom with a little basket. "Place your spinner thingamajig in here, please. You can have them back at recess, or when you go home. Thank you!"

Such simple solutions really.... no one has any "gall" anymore.

The teachers used to take our balls away, they were called "click clacks"
In 1969, when I was in 7th grade for the 3rd time, the teacher of English class, Brasley Bullock, who was of Jamaican decent, used to take the unused gum away from you if you were caught chewing, then give it back at the end of the semester and make those poor suckers who got caught chew it in front of class, or get detention for a week.
Those were the days.

And you, and I and countless other all survived, and are better off for it. (Lew is MUCH older than me. Just want to point that out. :biggrin2:)

You can't do that now.... because, my goodness.... you might hurt their little feelings! Or worse yet, embarrass them in front of everyone!! :Shame:

If they would just bring :Spank: back. Starting at home.....

The only thing I remember being banned was cinnamon toothpicks. These were homemade and HOT as HECK! Come to think of it, we weren't allowed to bring toys, toothpicks, or anything of the sort to school. Heck we didn't even try. FWIW, the schools I went to were fairly large--2,000 kids in 3 grades at high school. There were just way too many of us to tolerate such fads.

Trying to get this Cadet related, I first learned of these spinners from a "kid" at work. He takes machine shop classes at night. They printed off some rather crude versions of these in class on a 3D printer. Just wondering are there any Cadet items that used to be molded that could be 3D printed for restorations? I haven't looked but aren't the IH emblems for the 82 series NLA? Maybe some enterprising sole would want to undertake such a venture.

I think the 82 hood ornament Extreme makes is 3d printed.

When I worked in a office in 01-02 ,as a warrantee clerk
I brought in a cleaned axle bearing as a paper weight and I would spin it in the afternoon quite a bit , so I was a pioneer of sorts .

until one day when it had been super glued , This is why the spinners are likely not a fad.

Being rural has its benefits lol I just say some lady on Facebook getting roasted for selling them for 20$ or so dollars each. She dropped the bomb on herself by saying she bought them for $4.99 last night. I'm fairly young but I thought that these little spinning things were called tops? At least I had one when I was younger
