Tire options
 

I am making a list of parts I need to look at tires. I currently have the original Firestones. I like the look of but one has a leak and they are dry rotted. So I figure if I am going to replace them, I am looking for options, but also the ag tires I have seen on other tractors have caught my eye.

What model of tractor(s) are you working on..?? :Huh:

Look at the Carlisle Tru power's, it's a quality tire.

Depends on what you want to do with the tractor. I like the Tru-Powers, too. But I have turf tires and chains on a couple. That is more effective for snow situations.

I've got 23x10.5-12 Carlisle All-Trail II tires on my 169. I like them because they are easy on the lawn while being more aggressive for other applications. I do have them loaded with a set of wheel weights, and haven't bothered to put my chains on them this year yet for plowing snow. They're great in the garden as well unless it's too wet, but it's hard to beat something like a 23 degree Firestone for looks and playing in the dirt.

I'll agree that the Carlise TruPower are awesome. Just put a set on my 127. I had been running the original 23x10.5x12 with 4 link chains and weighs and constantly spun out throwing snow on a flat driveway when it drifted. It was especially a pain in the butt to load it on the trailer when the chains just spun on the steel ramps. I don't have the concrete driveway anymore to do a side-by-side test comparison, but I haven't been stuck yet and the look is way cooler. I try to always have a trailer around to transport my cub, but sometimes the only way to get it where it needs to go is in the back of my pickup. I feel much safer now with the trupowers vs. the stock tires. I could get it in my pickup bed without getting a running start at the ramp or spinning out half way up.

Have you considered ATV tires? They are softer than ags so they dont tear up the turf in the summer. I push a 54" blade with Kenda Bear Claws, no fluid, no chains, just 10lbs air and some extra weights in the winter.

So far everyone is correct with what they say.

I personally like loaded turfs and chains for all round work, it all depends on what you want to do with your tractor.

I don't load or chain tires on tiller tractors.

If your tires aren't too bad, put tubes in them. It really sounds like you just want new tires though.

I have original firestone turfs on my 147. I like the look of AGS and am going to be putting them on when they wear out. I considered Carlisle and Firestones and like the look of the firestones better. Dad's had Firestone ags on his 125 for years and I like the tread pattern. When I buy tires I'm gonna buy 'em and be done with it so I'm going to pony up and go Firestone.

I have Carlisle tru powers on the 149. Good tires. Good year ags on the 982. For the money Deestones are tough to beat, but they are made in Thailand. They do run slightly smaller in size compared to the others. Their tri ribs for the front axle are my favorites

Tires are a lot like shoes. If I am working on construction, lawn maintenance, physical labor, etc., then I wear me boots. If I am playin' bball (that's a sight for sore eyes), etc, I wear me sneakers. So as others have mentioned, it kind of depends on the duties that you want your cub to perform as to how you should "shoe" it. Of course you could always get another cub and reserve it for specific duties, then outfit it accordingly!:bigthink::biggrin2:......and another cub, and another, and.....

My :TwoCents: is turfs with chains for snow/ice duty or mowing on inclines; turfs for just mowing flatland; ags for tilling/plowing and other loose dirt applications.

Right now I cut and plow with my XT1. The 127 will most likely be something to drive around the yard to piss off my wife. I have no deck or plow so, like me it is pretty and useless.

In that case, get the Tru Power ags. I even put them (ags that is,deestone brand) on the front of a couple of mine. Some of the guys on here thought that was ridiculous, but I like the look, and it's all in fun anyway. I think it makes turning more sure--the tires don't skid on grass as much. Tri-ribs would do the same, I suppose. I have Tri-ribs on a couple, too. Hey, it's just a hobby!

Frank, I don't laugh at your ags on the front because a couple of mine have them too. I did not scientifically inspect it, but it eases steering just about as easy as the skinny tri-ribs on the front. So, you are spot on about the ease of steering and heck, anything grips better than those front flotation tires. :biggrin2:

Rides fine, and steers easily. Otherwise handles like it should.
