2182 winter project
3 Attachment(s)
So I decided to keep my 2182 and go through it this winter and see what I get done. I ran a compression test and everything was 180psi or better, so I figured this engine should have some life left in her with 1400 hours. Have to replace the cork gasket and with the 3 point hitch and rear pto, it's going to be a bit more involved than most.

Got the seat, fender and gas tank off. Hard to believe I spent a ton of quarters getting this power washed. Going to push it in the driveway and try again at home I guess.

Wow that 3 point hitch and pto are a pain. Have to remove a bunch of pulleys and braces. I don't think I'm going to do the sgt braces. The 3 point hitch has some massive steel bolted to the frame and the rear axle, so I don't there there will be any twisting. Unless I find the pump brackets are broke.
I have some issues with the rear pto shaft. There are couplers on each end and they are worn out. The holes are elongated on one side and the spline pump side is sloppy. Not sure what to do yet. May have to get something fabricated because the couplers alone are over $200! |

Finally got to the rear end cover and got it off. The oil didn't look bad at all. Now I realize to get the axles out, I have to go inside the differential to pull the c-clips off. I thought it would be a little more open! Oh well. That'll be tomorrow.

Of course, the steering cylinder started leaking and it's a welded sealed unit. There's a guy on here that can rebuild them but by the time I ship it back and forth and pay him, It's one of those things were spending a little more will get a new one. So I'm springing for $170 for the stupid cylinder. It's leaking at the seal where the shaft slides in and out, so not much I can do about that.
Also ordered new ball joints for each side of the steering cylinder and tie rod ends from McMaster. Figured while I have it here, may as well do it. I noticed some slop in the ball joints when turning. |

Although the brake pads seemed to have a lot left on them, I was out of adjustment on the brake rods. I ordered the pad material from McMaster. From all my measurements, I needed the 5/16" material.

Looking good! Don't forget how it goes back together, If I don't get my 1811 together soon I may have to start asking "where did this come from?":biggrin2: It's only been apart for a couple weeks, and counting......
|
Looking good on your project.
|
Excellent start. Keep at it and it will be done in no time at all.

Yes, that is a crappy design that they have on the rear pto.
Here is the shaft. Attachment 80333 Here is the front coupler. One side is an 11 tooth spline and the other is machined out for a 7/8" shaft. Attachment 80334 Attachment 80335 Buy this one here and have one side machined to 7/8" http://www.surpluscenter.com/shop.ax...eywords=1-2985 The coupler that attaches at the rear is just a 7/8" solid IIRC. http://www.surpluscenter.com/shop.ax...words=1-1563-d The shaft is 7/8" x 5" Attachment 80336 Don't forget the spiral roll pins Attachment 80337 Let me know if you any of the bearing numbers. I replaced every bearing in the rear pto on the 982 I'm doing now. Good luck. That will be an awesome machine when you are done. |
You should remove the axle tubes and drill the drain holes. Replace the outer axle seals too while you have the rear end out.

Thanks oak for the pictures of your rear pto shaft. Mine is about shot. The splines are all rounded out and the other side is elongated.
I'm going to check on the links you sent and see about rebuilding the couplers and probably welding them on instead of the roll pins. I'll need one hole for a roll pin to connect to the bearing side though. |

Got the rear end pulled out and on the bench. Found one of the bolts that holds the pump to the rear end was loose, so I'm guessing that didn't help the cork gasket to seal. You can see the existing cork gasket looks pretty well shot.

When you put the new gasket on put the 3 holes on the gasket up so that it covers the 3 holes in the tranny. The early pumps drained through the bottom hole and 2 bolts went through the other 2 holes. The late style pumps like you have don't use those 3 holes.

The PTO only adds one more bolt on each side correct? And it only transfers the force to the ends of the frame. The SGT brace adds three holes per side and moves the force like 10in forward. Where I think the brace is best is when you slam on the brakes, the rear end wants to roll itself, the front of the transmission wants to go down. The braces transfer that force up the frame. But like Sam said it's your tractor... |
The problem is that as the tractor twist's it works on the rear end. The braces drastically reduce the twisting. The Supers are the worst because of the extra frame length. Since I have sold the design and rights to manufacture to Xtreme I do not profit in any way to the sales. :beerchug:

I don't think the braces would fit. I already have a brace running along the bottom of the axles for the 3 point hitch, then the pto grabs another bolt off the axle. I'd have to see what the braces would interfere with.

I don't have a pic of the rear end all together to see the entire bolt pattern. Right now the 3 pt hitch bolts the two bottom and one side axle bolt. Then the pto plate bolts to another axle bolt. Then a top bolts to the frame. Leaving only one bolt on the axles that isn't attached to anything but the axle. It's going to be a pain to put it all back together. I think I'm going to have to bolt the axle housings on while it's in the tractor, I'm not sure yet. If I bolt the axle housings when it's on the bench, then I'll have to remove the two top bolts when I mount it into the tractor. Not sure I want to do that or not. I hate to disturb a gasket after it's been installed.

I found a pic of the braces but it might be an old pic from Sam. So the sgt braces would go on first, then my 3 pt hitch mount. That would make the hitch mount stick out farther but that shouldn't be an issue. As long as the braces don't come up too far on the rear bolt of the tractor, I think I'll be ok so it doesn't interfere with the pto plate.

I know exactly how it fits and it will work with your hitch. BTDT. One set on a 2284 (CADPlans) and another on a 2182. Pics are of the 2182.

That's a good idea Sam, you could use a crows foot type stud remover to remove the fill tube with the fender pan still on. Sorry, I'm still a newbie with these, all I have had to do is change the trans oil so far.

If you look at this pic, you can see a red line above the 3 pt hitch brackets. Does the brace go any higher than that red line? Because if it does, it would interfere with the rear pto black brackets. |

For the last freaking time, they will work. Been installed on lots and lots of machines. Sam designed the damn things. I think he would know. :bash2: |

I am 100% positive that they fit with the complete Cat 0 OEM Cub rear PTO hitch. Here is another pic of Cad's 2284. |
Taylorjm, the rear pto only mounts to the rear cover and top of the rear housing. It will work. I have several of the rear braces on my machines with rear pto.

So, I may not be working too much on the cub for a bit. The wife wandered into the garage where I was working today and saw it for the first time and asked what happened. So I told her the truth. The back half of the lawnmower just fell off! I was lucky to be alive! It could have ended in a horrific fireball of doom!
Needless to say, getting the stare of death should have been enough...except I put my foot in my mouth even further. I was cleaning parts and she saw my rag and asked where it came from. I told her from a bag in my rag box. I told her there was a bag of them and they were huge! That I could probably just use one and clean up everything on the tractor! Well, they were her old underware. I think I'll stay in the garage a few more hours.... |

So the big brown truck came today with a box of gaskets, and I have a question. Try not to rip on my too hard for asking this, it may be a stupid question, but I'm stumped.
In my bag of 2 rear axle housing gaskets, there's a single fiber washer. Any idea what's it's for? I'm hoping it's a mistake because I can't remember ever removing one. |
Could that be a friction disc? I ordered one because I figured I'd replace it since it's a commonly worn out part, but I don't remember seeing one in the box. Why would they put it in the same bag as rear axle seals?? Obviously, they are trying to confuse an old man.

Not going to be getting any what??.... not getting more of her old underwear to use as rags? :)

"You are not going to be getting any for a LONG TIME. :biggrin2:"

Not much new going on. Installed new axle bearings and seals. I decided to tap the top of the case to add a vent. I think it was Dirty Steve that did this before. Going to add a piece of fuel line and put a fuel filter at the top so nothing can get inside. Have the two new couplers from surplus center for my rear pto shaft. A neighbor owns Amigo (his dad actually invented the first Amigo back in the 70's) and he's going to machine half of the coupler to accept the shaft and bore holes for the roll pins. I think the couplers were $25 compared to buying them new for over $200.
