Need a bearing number

Item #28. Need the bearing number that goes in that idler pulley.

Mike, I'm pretty sure they are a 6203.

Texas Blues 11-15-2016 06:04 PM

I'm surprised that the bearing will press out of the idler pulley. At least on the A and C model decks I have, that bearing is encased in the pulley and wont come out. I have been buying idlers from XMARK mowers. The original bearings have a reducer in the center you can press out and press into the xmark pulleys. It's a hair larger than the original, but they work great, at least they do on my A and C model 44's and 50's. Here is a pic of one on my deck. TB

The last one of these I had to chuck it in the lathe to cut the weld that held the two halves together. I drilled six holes for 10-32 screws to hold it together. Worked is good as a new one.

Thanks but I don't think that is the correct number according to pictures of that number I've looked at. This bearing has an extended shoulder sticking out on one side. Pictures of 6203 don't show this?

You could be right though.

R lause. What number bearing did you use? Getting it apart wasn't a problem. Used a Blair cutter on the spot welds.

I think that is the only bearing that I have seen so far on my stuff but I have not done one that you are doing yet so I could be wrong. Let us know what it is please.

This was from a 3000 series deck I redone. The little bushing dohicky thingy comes out. Slap some grade 8 China specials on there from TSC to hold it together.

This one is from the Haban 374 that is taking forever to complete.

There are at least 2 different bearings for the idler pulleys, the other is a 1623 (Nice number) I believe the ones that this number replaces has an inner shoulder that is part of the inner race and does not press out.

I've yet to find a bushing/shoulder to use for these, always have to make them myself.

I am out of town till Fri. when I'll check. I have CRS.

Oak 11-15-2016 08:28 PM

Mike, sounds like you need to cut it open and measure it.

J-Mech 11-15-2016 08:47 PM

I'm lazy, I just spend $15 on a new pulley. That way it only takes 5 min to fix, and I don't have to use my bolt stock, welder, drill......

RLause 11-15-2016 09:13 PM

I'M retired, frugal, and love a challenge.

J-Mech 11-15-2016 09:20 PM

I'm not retired, have 5 young kids at home and would rather spend time doing something else. :biggrin2:

The bearing is out. No number on it. I wanted the number so I could order through Amazon.

Sam Mac 11-16-2016 07:09 AM

Measure it and check on McMaster.

I find this chart quite helpful.

These will work, have to get a spacer though,http://www.ebay.com/itm/6202-2RS-two...cAAOSwGXtXg-mE

Or NAPA 6202-FFB needs a spacer.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't look at the bearing I removed close enough. I was trying to find a bearing that had the shoulder you mention made as part of the inner race. I didn't have any luck. So I look at the bearing again after re-reading your post and I see that the shoulder is pressed inside the inner race.

Looks like 6203 2RS is the correct bearing.

What's aggravating about this is, I went through this same exercise a year ago and this "shoulder" wasn't a problem. I bought a sack of ten bearings and a sack of #10 screws/nuts (for the idlers with rivets). Naturally, I put them where I could find them again and now I can't!:bash2:

Thanks for the patience. Just took a day or so for the light bulb to come on.

RLause 11-16-2016 11:07 AM

Those are the ones I got the last time.

FrankF3 11-16-2016 11:16 AM

Mike if you buy a bunch of them again, maybe when you put these new ones in a safe place you will find the ones you put in the safe place before... :biggrin2:

I bought a 1/4" drive 13mm(?) Craftsman flex socket and modified it to easily remove the top starter bolt on a Vanguard. Put the socket, extension and ratchet in a clear plastic bag (so I could see it) and thought I put it where I could easily find it.

Few months later, I had to change out a Vanguard starter. Can't find the tool! Went to Sears and bought another socket that was mailed to me. Wrong size! I ordered two more of the other size and then I lost them before I could use them. I ordered another and as soon as it got here, I used it and didn't lose it. That's been over the last six months. The other day, I moved a jug of anti-freeze that had been sitting on my garage floor for a long time. Under the jug was the plastic bag!

This is what happens when you have too much junk, run out of dedicated places to put things and then not putting them away while you're thinking about it.

I'll work on it in my next life.

PS. The easy way to get the top starter bolt out of a Vanguard is to replace the hex head bolt with a socket head bolt and use a ball end allen wrench.

Yep, that is the reducer I was mentioning above. 5/16 to 3/8 (I think but cant remember for sure) but it does have a shoulder. TB

Sam Mac 11-16-2016 05:19 PM

Yep, buy a bunch, put them away in a safe place never to be found again. I think it's a conspiracy, I have the same problem. :bash2:

X2 on the socket head bolt for the Vanguard starters. :beerchug:

ol'George 11-16-2016 06:29 PM

Cheer up guys,
it gets a LOT worse as the years roll by.:bigthink:
I can remember chit 50-60 years ago but can't remember what I had for B'fast or if I even remembered to eat it.

Yosemite Sam 11-17-2016 12:04 AM

I've got so many "safe places" and places where "I'm sure to remember" that I can't find anydamnthing!

After I'm gone, my Daughter is sure to think, Wow, I didn't know he was that bad for THAT long.
