"Cub Cadet Patio"

I've been thinking about Starting another project recently, and in my internet research I have started coming across old John Deere patios. I really like these tractors, but to keep my collection pure (and the rarity of the patios) I've been thinking about a "Cub Cadet Patio". My question is, were there any "special edition" narrow frame cubs? Or what would you guys do if you were to custom build one? I was thinking a white tractor with red wheels and a red hood.

olds45512 10-12-2016 10:04 AM

Sounds like a cool project, I really like the blue patio's. The biggest problem with the patio's is the seat, most guys buy a yellow seat and the dye it whatever color they want. If you go with red I'd suggest a metallic, solid red might look a bit plain on a white tractor.

On one of the Facebook groups, someone had found some paperwork highlighting some "alternate colored" parts for a Cadet. I believe he actually painted a tractor like one of them, too. I'm going to try and do some digging around to see if I can find something again.

They were some bland colors, compared to the JD ones, but neat nonetheless.

:bigthink:

Thanks! In a perfect world, I would use an original. My family and friends seem to have an abundance of them and I can get them for cheap. I like the idea of the metallic paint.

The only downfall to metallic paint is that it will have to be base/clear, you can get single stage in metallic but it's really hard to spray without getting stripes in it. Depending on your skill level you may want to get the parts ready to paint and take them to a shop to have them painted.

Here we go! He painted his the Vista Green. Nice looking machine. I really like the look.

If you have Facebook, PM me and I can get you in contact with him.

You should spread the love of those Originals around. Hahah. I've been looking for one in good, original condition for about two years now.

:biggrin2:

Now that looks sharp, the pastel colors look great against the white.

Dane in PA 10-12-2016 11:54 AM

A quick search brought this up, too!

(Let me know if the link works. I had to upload it to a second site, as it wouldn't upload here.)

cubcadetguy123 10-12-2016 12:17 PM

Yea, it worked. That's too cool! This is definitely an up and coming project. I really like the blue and red

Dane in PA 10-12-2016 01:01 PM

A baby-blue and white cub. Now THAT would be a sight to see. :beer2:

MikeMasheris 10-12-2016 01:17 PM

John Lang in Iowa had one painted Chicago Cubs blue

Not very exciting, but you could do a gold demonstrator like the big ones
Or a white demonstrator

I have a blue and white one. Not baby blue though.

Alvy 10-12-2016 08:33 PM

That's cool, and interesting. 149? Where are the fenders from?

Alvy, thanks for the thought.

My input....

In 1965, Chevy had a color called Evening Orchid. Not real metallic as I recall, but gorgeous on an Impala! I think Pontiac used it also.

I'm picturing it with something in an off white/ivory combination. Hmmmmm

darkminion_17 10-12-2016 08:57 PM

They look good yellow and white to me,but I am a purist hehehehe

Not exactly sure of the model, no serial number tag anywhere. Has a 13 fin K341. I thought it might be a 169, but who knows. Couldn't prove it was a 169 so I made it into what I wanted; a wide frame, hydrostatic drive, hydraulic lift, round fender, Farmall headlights.
Fenders are from a Sears garden tractor. Steering wheel from some antique car (Ford?).

I have a 149 that I cleaned up. When I park the two of them together the blue/white gets all the attention.

since there has been opinions on both sides you'll need to be a bit more specific.

J-Mech 10-12-2016 11:00 PM

What's wrong with the color they rolled out of the factory with??

Custom builds are cool if done well, and sometimes custom paint really sets them off. As in the case of Adam's '66 series copy and Jerry's (dirtcowboy) '88 series copys. Brian (bocephus) is painting up one of his like an '88 series now.

But a plain old tractor with a custom paint job just looks...... out of place.

Just take from your "warehouse" spare parts a set of wheel, a hood, a front grill, a seat and paint them in any patio color you want to fit each season! Here your diner! :biggrin2:

Mr.Goffena 10-13-2016 08:45 PM

I tend to agree with J-Mech. But i did see Cub 100 that was painted highway orange. It appeared to be factory paint as there was no yellow visible inside the frame or on the trans. It wasn't a restored tractor. the guy told me he bought it from the Montana Department of Transportation annual sale. I really should have taken a pic of it. You could get a JD140 in a solid light blue color as a city tractor.

Sounds like fun! I prefer standard color as well, but that don't imply I'd never try something new!

Trust me, I love the original color more than anything, but I've always liked the idea of having something that nobody else has.

Why not just get a JD patio tractor? I've got other brands of GT's. Nothing wrong with collecting other equipment. You can't be prejudiced!!

Or you could do a custom build... not just custom paint.

The thing about having something that no one else does is the it's only cool if it's rare. If it's just custom, then it's just custom. Rare is rare. Custom is not rare.

ACecil 10-14-2016 12:30 PM

It's your tractor, paint it any color you like. As long as you are happy, that's all that matters. My 121 is red, and I love it! :beerchug:

cubcadetguy123 10-14-2016 10:39 PM

I don't have a problem with Deere equipment, that's what I've grown up running. The reason I don't go for a john Deere patio, is the price tag. The ones I've seen around here have always been sky high.

J-Mech 10-14-2016 11:16 PM

Disclaimer: I want to make this clear to the people who get bent out of shape when I give my opinion. Anyone can do whatever they want with their own equipment, but the OP opened this up for discussion, and I want to give my point of view.

I know what you mean. But here's the thing. That's kind of the fun of this whole hobby. I want an 800. I also want a 140-H3 Deere. I have yet to find either for the price I want to pay. "Affordable" if you will. I've missed out on a couple very good priced 800's this last year because they just came up at the wrong time for me..... you know, right as I spent $800 on vehicle repairs... or right after I bought my motorcycle, that kind of thing. The fun is looking for what you want, at a price you want to pay. I WILL own both an 800 AND a JD 140-H3 someday, and I will pay a price I'm happy with. My suggestion is KEEP LOOKING! Find what you want. Don't just build what you want.... this lifestyle that is taught in America is "RIGHT NOW". "I want it all, and I want it NOW!" Not saying that is you, but that mentality tends to carry over. If you want a tractor like a JD patio tractor, then get one! You don't have to build one.... I am a purist... sort of. I LOVE it when people do a custom job that looks like it rolled out of the factory like that. I also LOVE a good quality restoration. Unfortunately, both are rare. I'd rather see you restore and O and buy a JD Patio tractor, than restore an O to look like a JD patio. But.... that's my OPINION.
