109 Driveline

Hi Everybody, Just purchased a 109 that someone put a k301 in and the driveline was trashed, So I put a new one in and it looks to be about 3/8 to 1/2 inch to high to lineup with the hyd. unit. The motor is a 1985 k301, spec #47504 which from what I researched is for a 1972 IH. and should be the right oil pan. Bolts and Bolt holes in the trans are all like new.(no movement) Can someone please help ?:bigthink:

pic's of Driveshaft

Sorry about that, Here are some pictures of driveshaft misalignment as you can see Driveshaft is to far up. http://onlycubcadets.net/forum/pictu...pictureid=7061

I would loosen the bolts at the differential/transmission and see if I could raise the pump input shaft for better alignment. Short of that not doing any good, you might be able to shim the front of the engine a little higher.

This is assuming you can't find anything else wrong including the correct solid drive coupler on the engine.

slim5555 10-08-2016 04:22 PM

Did that

I SHIMMED THE FRONT OF THE MOTOR WITH A .080 SHIM AND LOOKED LIKE THE CENTER WOULD ALIGHN BUT THE FLEX COUPLER WOULD BE WORKING A LOT. Did not seam like that would last very long ??

Mike McKown 10-08-2016 04:53 PM

How about loosening the rear end and see if you can raise it.

I would think the pump driveshaft and crankshaft should be line/line and in the same plane. That rear coupler and driveshaft aren't meant to run at an angle to each other.

Silly question, there isn't a bunch of washers or shims between the engine base and the mounting holes for some odd reason is it? You never know what the last guy was thinking sometimes:HeadScratch:

darkminion_17 10-08-2016 07:47 PM

Did you get a new drive coupler on the engine?
As far as alignment, it looks pretty close to me,looks to be an 1/8" off.BTDT

J-Mech 10-08-2016 08:40 PM

The shaft doesn't align perfectly.... that's why it has flex couplers.

The stub ( small ) end of the driveshaft fits into the rear coupler.

Mike McKown 10-09-2016 07:08 AM

The stub on the driveshaft does fit in the rear coupler for sure. Looks to me like the rear of the shaft is hanging free, supported by the SOLID front coupler with a pin through it. If you force them together, you're going to bind up everything.

slim5555 10-09-2016 09:39 AM

I installed a new coupler at the engine and a new driveshaft. it has very little wobble at the hyd end of shaft. With the shaft centered on it's wobble (vertically) The center of the shaft to the center of the hyd shaft is about 7/16
off center. I'am going to remove the motor today and take the oil pan off, It should have a part number embossed on it. I was told that Kohler made oil pans that would make a difference in height.(For other equipment). Or maybe
Kohler changed the block on the k301's b/4 retiring this model.

Mike McKown 10-09-2016 10:36 AM

I don't know what's wrong with your drive line alignment but I'd fix it before I put the tractor in service. If you don't, you'll likely wind up with another drive line destroyed.

olds45512 10-09-2016 10:42 AM

before you take it apart you should post some pics of the front of the driveshaft and where the engine mounts to the frame, it might help give us a better idea of where the problem is.

Mike McKown 10-09-2016 11:01 AM

Look at this page. Could be your problem?

https://www.partstree.com/parts/kohl...an-0209015952/

If you change pans, make sure your dipper doesn't hit the new oil pan.

darkminion_17 10-09-2016 11:12 AM

Driveshaft looks to be too short,The pin does go in the hole. You can try loosening all 8 bolts on the tranny and see if you can move it up for better alignment. And yes, there are 8.

slim5555 10-09-2016 05:50 PM

OK, I loosened all 8 Bolts at the trany and only could get about .050 difference in height, And in the pic's of driveshaft the motor is not Bolted down or the end would be in the coupler. So I removed the motor again, Took the oil pan off and the number embossed on it is 47 475 01. I could not find any info on that number. maybe one of you so helpful people would have a oil pan that you could measure the thickness of the pan were the motor mount ????

mortten 10-09-2016 07:59 PM

The bosses on my K301 out of my 122 are 1 1/16", maybe 1/32" more. My eyes and the light weren't good. I know it was less than 1 1/8".

slim5555 10-10-2016 05:07 PM

Thanks, my oil pan also is 1.062, I am stumped the only thing left to do is to shim the motor in front to lineup with hyd unit and use the modified shaft fix with u-joint and flex plate at motor, It's the only way to insure proper alignment. I work in a machine shop so it will be a piece of cake.( I hope)

Yosemite Sam 10-10-2016 05:26 PM

Lets see a picture of where the shaft attaches to the engine.

slim5555 10-10-2016 05:37 PM

The motor is out of chassis so I can't get any pic's now, but I will tell you that the shaft is centered on flywheel, I turned the motor over by hand and the driveshaft stays in the same place in respect to the HYD unit shaft. I get it back together I will try to get some pic's b/4 I alter the old shaft for the u-joint fix.:BangPC:

Don't get too tight with your tolerances. It needs a little bit of play to work correctly.

Outside of the shaft being a little on the short side.... I don't understand what the issue is? They aren't perfect: Thus the reason for the flex coupler. Figure out why the shaft is short and bolt it up. No reason to go to great lengths for nothing. FWIW, post a pic of the end of the shaft at the motor. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an issue right away. If not, then the shaft is just too short.

slim5555 10-11-2016 05:09 AM

I will get pic's when it's back together. The Shaft only looks short because it wont let the motor go back unless I lift the front of motor so the end of shaft pin will go in the hole in the coupler of the HDY unit. So it's time to do some yard work so I wont be working on it for a few days. about posting pictures can someone instruct me on the best way to post them???:bigthink:
