Dirty Girl

Special thanks to OCC member Dirty Steve for the heads up on this one. It's a very grubby 1882 with a 450 blower and a 46" deck (not pictured). I also got a set of snow chains with it, all for less than $500. It was a 325 mile round trip but on a beautiful sunny day and time off from work, so no worries at all.
All the front plastic is pretty tough, broken tabs etc. but nothing is rare, so it will be an easy build.
The front crank seal has been leaking for several months and the PO just kept adding oil. What a greasy mess! It's headed for a date with the steam cleaner tonight at work. The seal is already ordered! Surprisingly everything seems to work, just very dirty. This is my third Cub in less than 4 months, you're darn right it's an addiction!

Title bait.... I got all excited! :biggrin2:

Nice score! :beerchug:

Dirty Steve 09-28-2016 01:58 PM

Hey! Was wondering how you made out. Looks good! PTO too??? Or is there 3 point??? You got a good start on a project. Congrats!!! :beerchug: :beerchug:

ACecil 09-28-2016 02:04 PM

Congrats on the 1882!

FrankF3 09-28-2016 04:04 PM

Nice find on the new additions. When you mount the snowblower, make sure the chute is pointed in the opposite direction. :biggrin2:

Sam Mac 09-28-2016 05:35 PM

You stole that one. Here is some light reading for you.

She will always be nicknamed "Dirty Girl" for that is how I found her, but here is a snapshot of the girl after her nice hot shower (3/4 of an hour of steam cleaning everything I could reach) She hasn't even toweled off yet! Other than one rusty rim on the right front, the paint is pretty good. As soon as the leaking seal is fixed, I'll start looking for a grill/nose piece and good side covers.

cubcadet 09-29-2016 11:44 AM

Looking good.

ACecil 09-29-2016 12:02 PM

She's looking good after the bath! :biggrin2:

Dirty Steve 09-29-2016 07:21 PM

She shined up pretty nice, Doc. Early style rock shaft?

Well, I found the oil leak behind the PTO. The crankshaft seal had been installed with part of the lip folded over! The PO said he had the seal replaced once before and it started leaking again about a week or so later, so he was reluctant to pay for the work again and never took it back. In my shop, that would be come back work and covered as a screw up then warrantied. It isn't a bad job to get at the seal with the grill being removed already. The PTO sure came off easy with all the oil everywhere. Here a couple pics!

Isn't it nice when you find an obvious problem!:beerchug:

You are correct... in my shop also that work would have been charged back to whomever made the screwup... but so many people won't go back when they have a problem

Dirty Girl is all dressed up and ready to play! After curing the front main seal leak and running the tractor around the yard, I discovered a chaffed power steering hydraulic hose that was dripping on the floor of the garage. After a quick to the hose shop, no more leaks. Even the rear axle is dry.
With it being this late in the mowing season here in NY, DG won't get to have her mower deck on until spring, but next on the list is to see what the 450 snowblower looks like. Dirty Girl will wear that out to play in the snow this winter. Hopefully she sees very little play time, I hate snow!!!

Sam Mac 10-04-2016 02:35 PM

Put a set of Xtreme SGT axle braces on DG, she will thank you. Nice looking Super. :beerchug:

Dirty Steve 10-04-2016 05:07 PM

Great work, Doc. What deck came with DG?

DieselDoctor 10-04-2016 05:48 PM

The Girl came with a tiny little 46" deck . I have about three acres to mow, so finding a 60" deck is on the to do list.

Sam Mac 10-04-2016 06:12 PM

Look for a 54" deck, much easier on the tractor. The 60" Habans are nice but they beat the tractor to death because of the weight.

DieselDoctor 10-04-2016 06:17 PM

Thanks for the advice Sam. Will do.

jaynjeep 10-04-2016 08:22 PM

Looking great!!

Like Sam said.... add a set of the rear axle braces... they really stiffen up the chassis and save the fragile aluminum rear axle mounts.:beerchug::beerchug:

DieselDoctor 10-04-2016 09:16 PM

Thanks Jay. I checked the rear axle and good so far, nothing broken or loose. I definitely will be ordering brackets as soon as the wallet recovers a little. Anyone need a couple dozen antique outboard motors? That's my other addiction! If I sell some of the outboards, I can buy more Cubs!

The fact that it had a 46" deck is probably why the rear is in good shape. A lot of the Supers that had the 60" decks were used commercially before the zero turns became the rage and they got beat up.

DieselDoctor 10-05-2016 11:38 AM

That's very true. I got lucky with this one, it's a one owner machine used to mow a two acre lawn that was table top flat. I kinda glad the owner was a fool and let it go because of the oil leaks and bad plastic. His loss, my luck!!

My 1782 was a one owner machine with the big Haban. Fortunately my mounts on the transaxle weren't broken but were loose... even after tightening the bolts I noticed alot of frame flex or twist when going over uneven terrain. Especially in the tunnel area. I took Sam's advice on the braces. After installing the braces the tractor feels rock solid... absolutely no flex or twist now. I understand about the budget!... I have the same problem:biggrin2::biggrin2:

It's all looking great!! Can't wait for the Turbo project on the smoker!!:beerchug:
