This followed me home this week!
682 with a blown KT 17 Series 1.

JayBrd 05-22-2010 02:55 PM

 Nice grab!

Diz Jr. 05-22-2010 05:49 PM

Nice Cub,
Are you going to overhaul the KT-17 or get another engine?

Rhoderman 05-22-2010 07:45 PM

Nice looking tractor!

I suppose "blown" don't mean supercharged, eh? How bad is it? Can it be rebuilt, or is there a big hole in the side of the block?

Matt G. 05-22-2010 07:47 PM

He'll have to replace it...You cannot rebuild a Series I because all of the Series I-spec parts are NLA.

Nice looking tractor though...the good news is, lots of engines will fit.

Cubcrazy 05-22-2010 08:33 PM

Thanks guys!

Yeah, Matt is right.
There is a window in the side of the block!
It will be getting another engine.

Cubcrazy 05-22-2010 08:37 PM

It's just another one in the line of projects!
The 682 did come with a really nice 44" deck that had a new shell a couple years ago.
I also have a yeller and white 782 and a red 682 that have the windows in the Series 1's too! They will be transplanted first.
I'm not very fond of the Series 1 engines at all!

ACecil 05-23-2010 02:05 PM

Nice 682, you got there! :beerchug:

Matt G. 05-23-2010 02:46 PM

Make sure you save the adjustable carbs off all of those blown Series Is.

TEET 05-23-2010 03:50 PM

Beautiful 682! :beerchug:

I just dropped a K301 from a 1250 in my red 682 to replace the fragged series I. Fit well with little modification, and runs beautifully.

Why is that Matt...do they have other applications?

I have a complete intake, carb, air cleaner assembly from my blown KT17...kinda figured it was only good for a boat anchor....

The adjustable carbs are good for replacing the POS Walbro non-adjustable carbs on the M18 engines. You can also use the jugs, heads, and sheetmetal on the Magnum twins. I usually keep all of that stuff when I junk a blown KT-17 because of the carbs and because sheetmetal disappears for some reason...people take it off and are too lazy to put it back on or something. I wouldn't junk the air cleaners either...they fit the M18s (air cleaner assemblies come up missing once in awhile), will also fit K-series singles with slight mods.

If I had that sweet little 682 this is what I'd do with it

I guess the smart thing for me to do is get an adjustable carb for my 1872. Anybody got one for sale?

Cubcrazy 05-24-2010 04:17 PM

Matt,

Yeah, I will keep them. I probably keep more stuff then I need to most of the time!

Thanks Allen, Teet, and Sam Mac!

Matt,
Are the jugs and heads the same, or is there some work to be done in order for them to work? And what is involved in the carb swap ?

Thanks JOE

Matt G. 05-25-2010 06:30 PM

The jugs are the same from what I've heard...however, you must use gaskets between the jugs and the block on jugs that had gaskets there, and RTV on jugs that had RTV there...that is the difference. The heads might be slightly lower compression (that's how they bumped the KT-17 up to 18 hp when they made it into the M18), but they will work. All you have to do for the carb swap is bolt it on and go. Some carbs need the hole in the throttle arm enlarged to fit the linkage design on some of the later engines.

Buy another blown KT17, build 1 from the 2, and install a set of 18hp rods in it, and it will be good to go. My Dad has been doing that for years.

I assume he's drilling the rod caps for oil holes, right? You can't use Magnum rods on a series I unless you do that. It'll seize up pretty fast otherwise. I had one engine that someone did that to, and didn't put oil holes in the rods.

JeffD 05-27-2010 09:14 PM

That is correct Matt.

Jeff
