New paint gun

I need a new paint gun, I sold my old siphon feed Binks "Collection" in the 80's and the last gun I purchase 10 years ago to paint few steel doors was a cheap gravity feed Husky with a 1.4 Tip. He still works, but I can't find a 1.8 tip to use it as a primer gun so It's useless for my needs.

Sata or Iwata are crazy expensive! No way I spend that much money on a paint gun and there is no way I spend $150 on a POS DeVilBiss Starting line set either, so I set my budget to $250 for the gun alone, he must work with my 21cfm fix compressor and my portable 10cfm portable unit, a LVLP or HVLP is what I'm looking for.

I like the DV Finish line deal on SPG site but any better advice is welcome ;)

i actually have a devilbiss starting line set here and both guns spray very well, i think the base/clear gun sprays almost as well as my sata's.

here's a review i did a while back. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ghlight=review

love my old binks guns, but I purchased a devilbiss finishline HVLP a few years back and it I like it for Base/clear.
But a good man can make a cheap gun work well.

I don't want to poop in your cereal Tim but the DV Starting line got poor reviews everywhere on the net and are apparently not better than all those anodized Chinese guns you can find on EB, they need a lot of air volume and I doubt the little TRUE 3hp 10cfm@90Lb portable compressor I build can't keep up feeding them. (I need a mobile setup)

Affordable Astro, Asturo and few Iwata copies out there got good reviews, but most are done by the average Joe (like me) or newbie saying they like the anodized color.. Go figure!:bash2:

True George! And a idiot can make the best one look like crap! I use to have a good hand and I did a good job with the crappy Husky ( No run, No orange peeling...) but practice is the key to get back on track.

How much are you going to use it? If your gonna be using it for a business, then I'd buy a professional gun. If your gonna shoot now and then I've used the harbor frieght hvlp guns with good results. I used their larger gun to shoot my 1200 and used their smaller one so far on my 1211. It's a knockoff of the sata gun, I didn't have any issues with it.

Panel look good!

If I count my 3 son projects +2 motorcycle + 3 Cub Cadet and a trailer let's say about 10 times but who knows! My retirement is imminent! (2 or 4 years) I want to restore a nice convertible! Ideally a Porsche Boxter S! I'm not done buying toys yet! I will never paint a Porsche with an HF gun! No no no...LOL

I like the DV finish line, he fit my budget and as far I'm concern if the painter know what he's doing a little bit... (I'm far from there yet LOL)

Enough say, DV FL it is and I let my 3 boys deal with it. Thank you folks for your suggestion.

Ps: The Porsche? I have a friend who own a paint shop, I pay him! LMAO

Thanks on the panel! No I wouldn't paint a Porsche with a hf gun either! Lol

I know "squad" about turbine system but I found this long thread and can't stop reading it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...ystems.529675/

Post 201 give this link to build a turbine on the cheap: https://books.google.com.ag/books?id...%20Rig&f=false

I like it! I's portable and minimize overspray, I just wonder if the gun do a good job atomizing the paint, warm air can dry the paint before hitting the surface, you need to stay close and run fast I suppose?:HeadScratch:

Exactly my experience using a turbine set up years ago, Maybe they have made then better now.

I would stick with a "normal" hvlp gun if it were me.

I used my finish line gun today, putting 2 gallons of Tsc majic paint through it while painting an old gravity wagon.

While the gun worked flawless, I had a problem using it around the supports/braces under the gravity wagon.
I knocked the dam push on cap off the cup twice, once spilling some paint on my tyvek suit/boot.
Me thinks I need a new cap, but prolly my old binks siphon feed would of been a better choice on the underside.:bigthink:

Same thing for welding, It's always a PITA to weld underside! The old Binks may have done a better job saving your boots because the cup lock but this shit overspray so much you may end up painting all you clothes if a little draft of wind catch you :biggrin2:

Not my business but instead of buying a new cap why you don't convert the finish line to DeKup or a similar system and save yourself a lot of trouble?

PS: the turbine system may have been a good choice for painting outside if I can build one for cheap It could be a fun project :bigthink:

No need to had another coat! I know front the first row, my friend swear by them and his Iwata too but since it's my birthday present and I hate to take money from my kids I choose a affordable but still good gun.

Buying a used paint gun from a friend who take good care of it is something I can deal with, are you my friend Tim? LMAO :biggrin2:

PS: I ear somewhere a member need a new suit/boot..... just an idea to help finance your new gun...:HeeHee:

But you didn't answer my question! LMAO

I have a few question related to your equipment:
1-Do you still use those NR2000 or they just taking space and collect dust?
2-Did you rebuilds them lately?
3-You did a base coat or a clear coat with the 5000?
4-What paint gun and tip size you usually use for clear coat?
5-What paint gun and tip size you usually use for epoxy primer?

PS:Tim statement can be use as a good starting base but may not be appropriated to everyone, experience and personal preferences are different from one individual from another, in simple word...Find what's working for you.

olds45512 09-19-2016 09:04 PM

I still use the 2000's daily, we send them to sata every couple of year to be rebuilt. I run a 1.3 for everything but primer and then I use a 1.4

I sprayed base with a 5000 hvlp and clear with a 5000 rp which stands for "reduced pressure" it uses a bit more pressure than an hvlp so it really atomizes the clear and make it lay like glass.
