782 Refurb Thread

3 Attachment(s)
I'll start this thread to chronicle some of the process along the way. Can't promise it will be short or interesting, but as I move through the tear down and refurbish, it will give me a chance to ask questions or answer others questions.

Bought this non-running IH built 782 at an estate auction July 16th. The right head and gasket were laying on top of the engine at the time of sale. Rolled it into my garage about a week ago and let the fun begin.

Discovered that it has a Kohler M18 replacement engine. The drive shaft can be rotated and I didn't hear anything suspect inside. Removed the left head and observed both right and left pistons and intake/exhaust valves all move accordingly. Even so, I'm not putting a lot of hope in this engine.

After running some basic wiring diagnostics, found out the seat switch didn't work and no power to the starter. Hot wire to the starter got it making a terrible noise, so needed to get it removed, disassembled and cleaned. Carb is a Walbro and it got removed to be cleaned. Drained oil, which surprisingly, looked really clean.

Looks like you're off to a good start! Looking forward to your updates.

Looking good... at least you have a newer engine and it doesn't have a thrown rod!!

Keep us posted!!:beerchug:

Continuing to clean up and disassemble. Got the engine pulled and had the typical oily/grass stuff on the engine plate. Also discovered the hydro lines had been damaged at some point.

With the engine out, was able to better access the starter. So will disassemble, clean and reinstall. Flywheel on the engine turns nicely. Still can't hear anything clinking around in there or anything giving me the impression something's wrong. So am planning to reassemble tractor to a point in order to attempt a start. We'll see.

Hydro unit looks like it's never seen a hose. Question: Can I use a pressure washer on the hydro unit without fear of water getting into the relief valves?

Got my old power washer running good, so used it on the 782 to clean it up. Came out real nice.

Amazing what a few minutes with a good pressure washer and some degreaser will do!!:beerchug:

Looking good!!

Looking good. Check the gov gear just to make sure it's there. I'm sure you knew that, but it's an easy check and a problem for that M series

Had a productive weekend.

Saturday, got the starter cleaned, bench tested and reinstalled. Runs good. Placed the M18 back into the frame to test it. Needed one item before I could test the engine, so moved on to the hub caps. Pictures below show the before and after. Used a piece of aluminum foil folded up and a can of Coke. Worked like I wouldn't believe! They don't look new, but I was impressed how they cleaned up.

Sunday afternoon, got the temp gas tank on, plugs in and magneto kill wire ready. Here's what an auction-bought, non-running Kohler M18 sounds like:

:biggrin2:

Was good to know that I may not need to buy a replacement engine (yet) and can proceed to other things. Like pulling the tranny cover. The contents was surprisingly good. Gears appeared good and the lube wasn't a foamy milkshake. Tip for all who have never pulled a tranny cover: Keep the two top bolts in finger tight and then pull the bottom outward just enough to create the opening. Loosen the two top bolts as required to open the bottom more and more until it is drained. Otherwise, you'll end up with a huge mess. Also make sure your tub or container is 2 gallon minimum. I had to retighten the bolts, dump the tub to get all the tranny drained.

I know the wiring is suspect, so will be rewiring the tractor. Now that I feel pretty good about the mechanics of it all, I can move on with some speed (hopefully) to totally disassemble, clean, paint and reassemble.

More to come...

The hubcaps came out great, nice work.:beerchug:

Great job on the 782!

Didn't spend much time last evening, but got the tractor de-veined and the steering wheel removed.

Busted a fuse holder, but no other damage done. Current wiring configuration may have worked, but PO had a separate grounding switch for the mag, which I'll replace with a harness based on Mr. Bedell's wiring diagram with relay. Most connections were rusty. The wires inside the harness looked old, even though the wiring harness itself appeared fairly new. Looks like a project the PO was in the midst of when he passed. Hard to say w/o any history.

As you can see, the plastic dash will need some repair.

Does anyone know if the plastic knob on the end of the hydro lever pulls off or is threaded? Need to remove it so I can remove the dash.

EDIT: Just looked on Parts Tree. Appears the knob is threaded onto the lever.

Hubcaps look great, looking good, keep it up!:beerchug:

I too have a 782 that was given to me from a neighbor. Looking forward to when I can get it going. Great work on yours so far.

Pretty sure the knob is threaded

I'd be tempted to hook a gravity feed bottle to the carb and bust that M18 off to see if it had any weird noises or smoke?:biggrin2::biggrin2:

Looking good! I'm jealous... wish I had time to tear my 782 down and refurb it... it's getting a little tired and old looking.

I sat on it new in 1980 sitting in the IH showroom

Keep up the good work!:beerchug::beerchug::beerchug:

SGragg 08-12-2016 07:42 AM

jaynjeep: I did put a gravity fed gas tank on it. It's in the post on page 2 of this thread (see video link). The Kohler M18 ran good enough to cause me to think of keeping, instead of replacing it. :)

Thanks for the comments.

Sorry... I remember reading that now.... I think I'm getting forgetful in my old age!!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

I'm enjoying following the progress regardless:beerchug:

Did a little work over the weekend. Got the rest of the tractor disassembled, so now can concentrate on cleaning.

Pulled the axle tubes and discovered a little water and oil mix, about a pint each side. Not sure if I'm going to drill the drain holes in the tranny case or not.

Pulled the flywheel last evening. Was curious more than anything as to the condition of the stator. My suspicions were confirmed--a lot of grime and dirt. Will clean and start reassembling to paint the engine.

Fun times. :)

Looking like a very thorough job you are doing!!

Will be a very nice tractor when done :beerchug::beerchug:

The PTO switch was a rusty mess. Disassembled, cleaned and put back together. The time clock was the same, but when cleaned and applied power, nothing doing. Will get a replacement.

Got the stator removed and cleaned up. Degreased the engine and painted it with Ace Rust Stop BBQ paint (1000 degree F). Also painted the exhaust, intake and muffler. We'll see how long that lasts (probably not long). Painted the oil dipstick handle and flywheel IH Blue. LOL, why not?

Have the engine shrouds to paint tonight, then on to the red sheet metal. Looks like I have a little welding to do on the trunnion corners.

ACecil 08-22-2016 10:21 AM

Keep up the good work! Thanks for the update and pics.

jaynjeep 08-22-2016 11:45 AM

Looking good!!

WOW you are dedicated... take the PTO switch apart and clean it... most people would throw away and buy another... I admire your dedication and commitment to the details!!:beerchug:

Some additional progress over the weekend. PTO magnet cover had some cracks/chips; layered on some 2-part epoxy. Examined the dash to find some hairline cracks, some obvious cracks/pieces missing and one of the connection screw holes blown out. Will need to do a make-over on it. Have this missing corner on this one still intact on my CCC 782, so will try to make a mold and use fiberglass patch to fill in.

Also got the hydro pump off and cleaned the tranny in and out.

Hot and humid weather around here (normal), but makes for uncomfortable working conditions.

ACecil 08-30-2016 12:49 PM

Thanks for the pics and update!

jaynjeep 08-30-2016 06:22 PM

Id say you cleaned the tranny!!... cleaned it so good you knocked all the paint off!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

It's all looking great!!

That dash is gonna take some time... not saying you can't fix it but I see decent used dashes here and there for sale for not a whole lot of money... just a thought...:bigthink:

If you do fix it keep us in the loop... I'd like to see how it turns out and what you used :beerchug:

Thanks for the updates!
:IH Trusted Hand:

zippy1 08-30-2016 11:32 PM

Yeah, good work thus far.
As Jay mentioned, keep us up on the dash repair. We gotsta know how it comes out.:bigthink:

SGragg 09-01-2016 07:57 AM

Thanks for the compliments.

Ok, how much primer and paint do you guys think it will take? Two quarts or more?

If I were you I would go ahead and get a gallon of paint. The amount of paint it takes really depends on you and what gun you use. If you get a gallon, that leaves room to fix something if you have a problem or you might get another implement you want to paint red. They SHOULD be able to mix it again and make it match, but my experience says not.

I would get the primer a quart at a time unless there is a big savings buying it by the gallon.

Randy

SGragg 09-01-2016 11:05 AM

Thanks, Randy. I was thinking a gallon of the 2150 Case-IH red and (2) quarts of primer.

Your project is coming along good! A lot of good information. Keep at it. :beerchug:
