My 1450 restore is underway

As I posted in another thread. I came across this baby when I was helping a friend of mine clean his dads shop and selling stuff after they had to put him in a rest home. His dad had worked on tractors for over 50 years and had quite a collection of tractor related items including 5 cub cadets in the early to late 80s. Billy (my friend) told me his dad worked on all brands of tractors but was really partial to cubs. While poking around I noticed back in a corner of the shop something covered with a tarp. When I pulled the tarp there she sat partly torn down. I ask Billy about it and he told me his dad had bought it several years ago with the intentions of restoring it himself and had started working on it but never finished. He also told me that when his dad got it was running and was still cutting grass. Any way long story short I got the tractor and all the parts we could find and so far everything is here except the mower deck the ignition switch and the pto switch. Here's a pic or two of it the way the way I found it.

Looks like a fun project! The ignition switch, pto are easy to replace. Several aftermarket and you can get them from cub too. Decks are out there too. Have fun, keep us posted!

Yeah, looks like a project, but you should have all kinds of fun putting it back together.:beerchug:

Can't see the engine cradle in your pictures, you need that and new ISO mount, look around in your friend Dad shop, they are 2 separate pieces of metal the one in this picture have been modified with a cross section. Good luck with your project :beerchug:

Yeah I looked around the shop for the engine cradle but couldn't find. I found one on e bay and ordered it. still have to do the mod on it but a good friend who is a good welder will take of that:biggrin2:. Thanks for the specs.

Update on restoration of 1450. I got the little bugger tore apart and after about a gallon of purple power and lots of pressure washing it's ready for sanding and glazing some rough rust spots. Tare down wasn't to bad PB blaster works miracles. Had hep big trouble getting the steering wheel pulled, I tried most everything in the book short of cutting it off. But was finely able to get it with a gear puller set I picked up at Harbor Freight (the big boy tool toy store). Got parts ordered and they are on the way. Lots of good information on OCC website about these older Cubs. Anyway i'll post updates as work progresses. :beerchug:

update on the restore. I have got a little distracted the past week. While looking for a deck for my 1450 I ran found a 782 with a good deck but no engine. Tractor is complete minis engine, guy offered me a good deal so I bought it. This cub fever is gonna send me to the poor house.:biggrin2::bigthink:

Hey, don't sweat it getting "side tracked" especially if it meant getting another tractor. It ain't going nowhere till you want it to.:beerchug:

Same thing happened to me when I was looking for a blade and wheel weights. Before I knew it a whole tractor jumped up on my trailer and wanted a ride home....

here is a pic of my latest addition or should I say addiction:biggrin2: I have the side panels for it and other parts. But for the price with a good mower deck was hard to refuse. Hoping I can make Miss Pat see the way I was thinking.:Bowdown2:

I was looking at a blade and ended up with 1211 with no engine, it now has a transplanted k301 in it. It's easy to use get addicted to them! I'd find a Aqs k-series kohler for that 782, doesn't take much to make it work!

Been awhile since I have given an update. But I'm still at it. Been kinda hectic around here the past week or two. Anyway I was able to get back in my shop yesterday and got some sanding and prep work done. Got my primer paint and am hoping to too get some parts primed. I thought when I retired I would be able to do things I wanted to do but believe me this is not true. Guess I'm to nice of a guy :biggrin2:to say no to those who need help. Which this is a good thing I'm sure. I will post pics when I get some parts primed and try to keep everything updated.

Another update. I was able to get some time to do a little priming yesterday and today. I got most of the tractor parts primed. Sure was good to finally smell some paint. Turned out pretty good for a novice I think. As I have always been told prep is one of the most important things. Hope to get some color on it next week. :beerchug:

:Announce: Been a good week for me and the restoration of the 1450. I got all the yellow paint on this little critter Friday and I am tickled pink how it is looking. The white will be on next week (hopefully). I have never done a restoration on anything, but have always wanted too tackle something like this. I was gonna make this a fall/winter project but the more I get done the more I want to do:biggrin2: I Want to thank all you guys for the information I'm getting off this web site.

Hey dude your projects looking good but just careful about painting things shouldn't be painted. IE Hydro fins.

Thought this was going to turn into a 782 thread for a little bit LOL

The 782 is another project sitting behind the shop with tarp over it.
Should I have not painted the hydro fins? :bigthink:

The hydro fins were left with no paint from the factory for heat transfer... the paint can act as an insulator and will make your hydro run hotter.

That being said... I have seen them painted before and the hydros still worked fine..

Might not be a bad idea to take a wire brush to the fins and knock some of the paint back off..

Been awhile since I gave an update. I got all the parts painted and have been letting it cure before reassembly begins. I have a problem though, As stated in first thread when I got the tractor it was party torn down and, A lot of the bolts and nuts are missing. Can anyone advise a web site or someway to get the right size bolts for the frame and tins for the tractor also the k321 engine.

I've had good luck using cubcadet.com part finder. Generally they have the bolts listed with each part. It takes a little deciphering sometimes, but you can generally find all the bolt sizes, lengths thread etc

Nice thing about old cub, is that the bolts are all SAE and not really too many different sizes. You can always go to the hardware store to get what you need.

Hey Bamafan, you can always ask here for specific fastener sizes. Seems like we got a few guys with Quietlines tore down right now so someone should be able to help out. Pictures help.:beerchug:

:Announce:Well Gang I am happy to report I was able to find some time the last few days for my 1450 restore. I got the rear end mounted, the tower and steering mounted. The gauges in, new ignition switch, and new wiring harness installed.
Today I got the hydraulic lift installed. I hope to get the engine in soon. Sure would be good to smell some exhaust fumes. :beerchug:
