Ordering spiral pins
Planning to place an order for spiral pins from McMaster and it looks like they have a few options, any reason to order anything other than the regular steel pins? I'm looking at the 1/4x1 1/4, part #91598a482.

I have had good luck with the extra strength steel ones Tim.
More money but 30% stronger. Part# is 95755A415. |
Looking at the specs for them at McCarr, the extra strength and the 420SS are rated higher strength than the reg. steel ones.
I guess it is your choice as what you want to spend really. |
FWIW:
The extra strength pins drive in a lot harder.:bigthink: Do yourself a favor and get some pins that are longer than you need now and when you might need them later, you will have them and cut them to the length you need. The shipping $$ are saved and it is nice not to have to wait on a stupid pin to be shipped. |
I always get the 95755A415 extra strength pins.
It does seem to me that these pins aren't nearly what they used to be, they don't seem to be as heavy and they drive in easier than they used to. |

I always just go back to my "previous orders" and order the same things that I ordered before... For about the last year or so these pins just don't seem to be the same as they used to be. I have also tried ordering from a different supplier but they weren't any better. I used to think sometimes that they were a real bat turd to drive in. |
I bought clothes pins about 15 years ago, and they really held the the blankets on the line with 3 or 4 of them, now you need 6 or more, they just don't make em like they used to.
Tim, You have to to find the NOS spirol pins. |
Looking at the detail drawings of the regular, extra and 420SS there is a variance in diameters on a couple thousandths that would effect how easy they go in.
Of course the hole they go into is not getting smaller either. |
They seem to have a .010 tolerance on dia.. Maybe changes in manufacture etc. would end up with different diameters and .010 would surely make a difference in press fit. ..:beerchug:

You guys are making it really hard to decide what to order.:biggrin2:
