Hi Guys,
Although I am new to the Cubs, I now have this old girl to work on. I know it needs a set of fenders, but can you old timers tell me anything about it? Can you put a 3 point hitch on it and does anyone make repop headlights?

First of all..... not all of us are "old timers". Unless people in their 30's are now old. :bigthink:

Second, unless you want them, it doesn't "need" rear fenders. They were optional. Lots and lots of them built without them.

Yes, you can put a sleeve hitch on the rear, but the Originals take one that is specific to them.
Does anyone make repro headlights: No. But you can find OEM ones for sale. They aren't super rare, but you may have to look for a while.

What can we tell you about it??

Not much from the single pic, but here's what I see:

It's an early one as it doesn't have a creeper hole, but it does have the hole in the tower for the steering gear. Someone has repainted the wheels at least and was kind enough to overspray paint all over the tires. :bash2: I would assume that it has been repainted as it looks really nice for it's age, but I suppose it could be original paint if it was garage kept. It does have the original tires on it. It has a clamp on the lift arm that isn't supposed to be there. Also, has a black bracket on the front that shouldn't be there. Appears to have something bolted just behind the seat on the rear end... that isn't supposed to be there either. Not sure what all that "extra" stuff was for. Looks like it has a toggle switch instead of a key switch.

What's the series number of this bad boy??

Of all my "O's" I only have two sets of fenders.

3 point hitches are a little scarce and pricey, but they're out there.

The front tires are not factory. I was under the impression that the rear tires on Originals were the Firestone (someone help me out) Town and Country? They looked like an old fashioned bias ply snow tire. I didn't think they used that style tire until later.

The hood decal is an incorrect style reproduction. There are many like that out there but it looks like the "International" is in Italics.

The serial number should be crudely stamped into the reduction housing near the plug.

Okay, this "old timer" thinks you have a good start with that tractor.
Lights aren't cheap, if you can find them.
Those tires are not original equipment for the Original. As well as the other things that were pointed out, but hey, it's your tractor now, use it and enjoy it.
Get us some more pictures when you can.

Thanks for pointing out alot of these things guys. I use the term old timers as in the hobby a long time. I am 61 but a newbie at this. I didn't pay much for this tractor, but would like to tear it down and fix the problems I can. I will post some pics soon.

All of the people thus far who have chimed in are truly "old timers" despite what they say. I am the youngest of the whole bunch! :biggrin2: .....but they know their stuff about cubs and know it quite well. A little secret about the headlights......The headlights on an old IH combine were the exact same ones by the Guide Co. So if you can find an older IH combine, then you can use those on your O as a factory set. Sometimes at swap meets you can find these headlights pretty cheap (like $1/each is what I sometimes pay for them), but I have also seen them sell on Ebay for over $400/set.

Nice looking O you have there from this young pup....Your seaty has some weld marks on it, so it has been repaired where they usually crack.

Cub Cadet 123 is correct about finding the proper style of headlights on other IH equipment; like combines. I'm going give up a secret. IH farm tractors from the early 1960's also have the correct headlights (AND) the same hood emblem that they put on the Original ! So far, I have added three to my collection.

Sometimes. They look very close, but there are small differences. Ring (band) size is one difference. There are some that have more of a bullet shape cone.
I'll try and remember to take a picture of the two side by side. Master of Lew clued me in on this when I was looking for a replacement for my "O":bigthink:

I don't know, but finding a 3 point hitch seems impossible. I should have mentioned that this tractor has been in the same family since new. It was passed down from Granddad to grandson.

You can tell, it was well taken care of.

Can you guys tell me what paint you use? I need yellow and white or cream for the hood. Also, a good replacement decal?

I wouldn't repaint that tractor. It looks GREAT!!

Serial is stamped on the right side of the reduction housing of the transmission.

It looks original to me? That is why I asked, how can I be sure?

Is this the serial number? Oh, and by the way, a 3 point hitch, spring assist, Brinly sleeve hitch and wheel weights cost me as much as the tractor? I can see you guys spend a lot of $$ on your tractors, and I still want a set of fenders which I have found locally for another 175.00?

No, that's just a casting #. Serial is near the fill plug. It's stamped in. It may be hard to see.

Yes that is the serial number, I'm not too sure of the year.

You have a nice tractor. Should be a good project.
On the paint you will just have to examine areas closely that may be behind or under panels.

Listen, it's your machine, you can do what you want, but I wouldn't. Does it leak? Does it run? Does everything work? I'd fix what needs fixing, paint the deck and use it.

Wrong muffler. I would say that someone took nice care of that Original !
