New to me Yellow 982 made it home!
2 Attachment(s)
I've been hunting a 982 for some time now. This one popped up several weeks back from a fellow member (dbarufaldi) out of NY. I really wanted a red one but this loaded yellow one popped up. I really didn't even know there was such a thing as a yellow 982.. All the ones I have ever seen were red.
According to my Cub Cadet book it is considered to be a 986 with the factory installed PTO, three point, and hyd remotes. Never thought I would buy one so far off!! But after talking with Dan I was comfortable with the deal and we made it happen.. I still think I'm crazy for making a deal sight unseen that far off, but so far I am extremely happy with it. Dan did a great job with the palleting and Fastenal was more than easy to deal with. I'll get some better pics soon. These were taken before it made the trip. The old Onan runs great and is gut strong just like I remembered them being. I'll give some more updates as I check it out some more!:beerchug: I've never owned a super in this series so I'm appreciative of any info or tips you guys may have. |
i also never knew they made them in yellow and white, pretty cool.:beerchug:
|
Jay, that thing looks awesome! I've only ever seen pics of the Y/W 982's and I'm thinking they are a rare bird. Yep, we're gonna need lots of pics.:biggrin2:
|
She looks really nice! Dual stick and all the bells and whistles!
One thing about this super- your hood will out last the cyclops hoods:biggrin2: Better not leave us hanging, pics as soon as she hits the unloading dock :beerchug: Nothing beats the dual exaust notes of an old Onan!! Only thing I found worn that I didn't think should have was the pump splines I put a driveshaft off a 2xxx on cause it has much more contact area. |
Its no show queen, but appears to have been well cared for.. I put gas and oil in it, strapped the deck under it and went to work cutting knee high grass at the shop... The old Onan dug in and never let up!:beerchug: It's super smooth and well balanced. Runs much slicker than any opposed twin Kohlers ive had!:beerchug:
The previous owner was using it about 4 hrs a week cutting grass for 4 or 5 years. Needs a little TLC but all in all it's one of the best used tractors ive ever bought:beerchug: |

Nice tractor. Never saw one in person either. I thought they were 19xx's in yellow and white. Congrats and enjoy!
|
Congratulations Jay. And the fun begins.
|
Congrats on the loaded 982 Jay, looks great!:beerchug:
|
Glad you got it Jay,I had the chance to buy it,but I had the opportunity to buy the 1512 instead.
Keep us posted on the restore! |
Glad you finally found one, and a more "rare" version at that (yellow)! That Onan will have plenty of power for the deck, mine does well pulling a 60".
So what's the plan, mow grass, plow, trailer queen restoration, or sit around and collect dust? Inquiring minds want to know! |
Congrats on your 982, Jay!
|
A Yellow 982? Never knew they existed...looks to be in beautiful condition - and loaded. What year? We need video to hear that Onan!
And with that monster, you don't NEED any other machines! |
Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments! I appreciate them all! :beerchug:
Thanks Lew for letting me score this one! :beerchug: Thanks Todd aka Oak, for giving me a shot at it! TerryC, I used to work on the old Onans back in the mid eighties... hearing those exhaust notes the other day immediately brought back memories.. I can tell an Onan a mile off! :biggrin2: |

After I figured out this deal was going to happen I had thoughts of a total tear down and a color change to red! But after realizing how rare a Yellow 982 may be, Im afraid a red conversion might be a sin!:biggrin2::biggrin2: Or at least some people on here would probably run me off!:biggrin2::biggrin2: For now I will focus on all the mechanical issues and little things that need attention. Complete service and tune up, probably a trunion repair, check out the driveline, a bit of play in the steering etc.. I like to run them a while before any paint or cosmetic work.. that way if you have to go back there are no paint scratching issues!:beerchug: After running it some I have no doubt the Onan has the guts to handle a Haban 60 incher. Glad to know that yours does.. I'll run the 50C for now... but if I ran across a spare Haban who knows!:bigthink: It appears to have been painted once (not the best job, but not the worst) and it Might get a fresh paint job, but it will never be a trailer queen. I like to work them too much!:biggrin2::biggrin2: |

I really wanted your red 982, But this one was already in the works when yours came up for sale! Dan had really bent over backwards for me on the yellow 982, and he gave me the opportunity to back out, but I felt bad and decided not to back out. Was hoping to get a shot at yours also, but somebody beat me to it! Oh well, was probably a blessing because I have too many already!:biggrin2::biggrin2: |

I think it was built in late 1982 as a 1983 model. But i haven't even had time to run the numbers!:beerchug: The paint looks a bit better in the pictures than in person, but It really is a nice straight tractor. I'll work on a video! I LOVE an Onan... esp the sound.. just hope I don't need many Onan parts because they are EXPENSIVE!:bash2: I'd love to have it looking like yours do one day!:beerchug::beerchug: And you are 100 percent correct! I don't NEED any more tractors! This is my third Super in less than a year!! And I haven't sold anything!!:beerchug: The sheds are bout full! :biggrin2::biggrin2: |
That's "super" Jay I'm glad you finally got one you've been looking for quite a while. And that baby has some cool options. Cool to see you got a northern edition too! I have a few of those myself. I will say like most here that I didn't know about the yellow/white option either, you did very well. I guess I will still hunt for mine.
|
Does the tag state 982 or 986?? I had one that was loaded and it was a "986"... all the goodies but Power Steering...
I ended up taking off the peripherals and putting them on my 1872.... Its pretty close to a 1914 also... Good find... |

I wasn't looking real hard and never in my dreams would I have thought I could or would make a deal that far off.. The more I talked to Dan the more I just kinda fell into it. Maybe I will find a red 982 one day. I may play with this one for a while and then let it find a new home. I don't really know yet.:bigthink: It seems all the Supers are up north.. seldom do I run across one in the south.. I think all out Northern buddies are hoarding them!!:biggrin2::biggrin2: |

It does state 986 on the tag.. mod 143986100 serial 2050588U712490. When the tractor first came up for sale Oak had decoded it as follows in this link. (post number 12) http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...rufaldi&page=2 I'm going to play with it for a while... then it may hunt a home.. who knows.. :beerchug::beerchug: I had thoughts of the 3 point and the rear PTO coming off but I hate to split up such a nice tractor with factory installed options on it!:bash2::bash2: |

Never had the opportunity to crawl around on one of the steel-hood supers. I'm also on the never-ending hunt for a 982, or maybe a big-brother for my 1812. :bigthink: |

Underneath the 82 series aren't that much different than the Cyclops tractors. Even though the Cyclops was "all new" you can still see the IH 82 series heritage! You guys have all the Supers up north.. wouldn't think it would be that hard to find one not too far from you.:biggrin2::biggrin2: |
Wow that has all the goodies! I like the red ones pretty good but that's an awesome 982, if and/or when you want to sell it.....
|
Very sharp, good luck with it.
|
Congrats with the new Super Buddy. Hope it plays nice with the 2182. :beerchug:
