Changed blades, not happy, right ones?

I've got a 38" mowing deck on my 100.
I recently found some NOS small outer blades for it and ONLY replaced the outer ones. After installing them, I'm not sure I have the right blades or maybe I didn't level the deck correctly or??
My problem is that they seem to be scalping even with the deck in float mode.
I've got deck limiter so that it rests in the fully up position, but I'm still having issues. The new blades also don't mulch as well as the old ones. They just blow it all out the discharge and there are a lot more clippings.

So, what do you guys think?
I've attached a pic of the underside of my deck with the new outer blades installed.

Can anyone provide me with part numbers for the long inner blade and the small outer ones? The blades I got don't have a part number and just say rotary mower blades.

thanks

Well.... they aren't mulching blades. They shouldn't mulch.

Looks right to me. :Unknown:

R Bedell 06-22-2016 08:46 PM

I don't see any Deck Baffles. Where are they..???

rbarri2 06-22-2016 08:47 PM

Yeah, but the old ones weren't mulching blades either.
The old ones do have a different flare that apparently makes a difference.

rbarri2 06-22-2016 08:50 PM

The baffles haven't been on it since I've owned it (3 years or so).

After I got this deck dialed in about a year ago it did a fantastic job on the grass.
Now, not so much.

I found some part numbers at this link:
http://www.ihccw.com/mowblade.html

I missed the missing baffles. They do make a difference.

Make some.... :biggrin2:

rbarri2 06-22-2016 09:22 PM

I'll make some baffles, I have some metal leftover from repairing a floor section on my Travelall.

Any tips on leveling these decks? It's the pin on style. I have a mower blade cutting gauge that I use right now to make sure the side to side is spot on.
The only adjusting area I have are the 2 eye bolts that hang the deck in the front.

olds45512 06-22-2016 09:43 PM

i dont think the baffles make much of a difference, my 48" deck cut better before i put new baffles in.

rbarri2 06-22-2016 09:45 PM

I know that this deck can make a beautiful lawn W/O baffles, that's why I'm confused about the new outer blades screwing everything up so much.

see page 39 for part #'s

I do believe the blades have #'s stamped on them also.

Thanks!
I should have checked the blades for a part number before I installed them. I'll do that soon.

The adjustments are made with the front hangers for front to back, and by placing washers under the rear hangers for left and right.:beerchug:
"IF" the old blades cut better, just put them back on.:bigthink:

thats the kind of problem solving that makes this the best cub forum on the net.:biggrin2:

The new blades have a bigger wing which means they will make more lift and throw the grass out faster. The smaller wing blade will throw the grass slower, which means there is more time for the grass to be recut before it finally leaves the deck giving the appearance of finer clippings.

Good info.

Does anyone have a pic of where the washers go to level the deck?
I'm having a hard time picturing washers under the rear hangers (but I also haven't had my coffee yet)

Where exactly do the washers go for deck leveling?

thanks for all the help!

Between the bottom of the rear hangers and the top surface of the deck.

rbarri2 06-23-2016 12:04 PM

thanks!

This seems like a very tedious process with a heavy deck and stuck bolts.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly I will:

1. Raise deck to gain access to blades for measuring height.
2. Adjust the side to side level using washers under the rear hangers as needed.
3. Adjust front eye bolts for the front to back level.
4. Adjust deck stop to desired cutting height.
5. Engage float on deck lift.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks again for everyone's patience and info!

darkminion_17 06-23-2016 12:07 PM

the deck wheels are adjustable also.

rbarri2 06-23-2016 12:10 PM

Good call.
From what I've read I want them about 1/2" from a hard surface correct?

Is it just me or is the front of the deck missing some meat? It looks like a good majority of tunnel is missing??

You might be onto something. It does look funny. :bigthink:

Mike McKown 06-23-2016 02:04 PM

I have an old 38" pin on deck that looks like that. Maybe they're all made that way?

Here's what mine looks like (it was a pin-on, modified to q/a)

rbarri2 06-23-2016 05:52 PM

Ironman, that deck is a thing of beauty!

I took some measurements per the manual and the deck was pretty far off left right and front to back. I've added some washers to make it level and will soon tackle the front to back.

I think I need to convert mine to QA, that looks MUCH easier than mine.

Oh it's a real b@#$c leveling these decks with the washers.:bash2: Try doing it sitting in a chair using one hand, cause you're hanging on with the other one so you don't fall out.:bigthink::biggrin2: Oh yeah, it sucks.:beerchug:

Don't dispare Zippy I remain amazed at all that you do. You always seem to find a way.
