374 Haban deck rebuild

3 Attachment(s)
Going to get started on the deck which came with the 2182 that was supposed to be for parts. It has some wallowed out castor wheel pin holes and a section of baffle is missing underneath. This will be a painfully slow process. I did spend some time yesterday on the center bearing cup. Cleaned the threads on the mounting bolts. Then discovered the bottom pulley has some rust build up. Hoping it cleans up well. I was able to chip some out with hammer and punch. Any suggestions for a better method?

Sam Mac 06-20-2016 08:34 AM

Chip out the heavy stuff then use a right angle grinder. The grinder will spin the pulley as you clean it. Worked for me your results may vary. Make sure you have eye protection.

Berwil 06-20-2016 09:45 AM

I'd use a knotted wire wheel in a bench grinder or angle grinder. Like Sam said, it will spin the pulley and cover you in chunks of rusty steel.

I use a lathe:biggrin2:
But if I don't /can't use the lathe I use a right angle grinder with a flap type wheel.

So I stripped this deck last spring. I was able to get the side spindle covers painted. I had help from my brother welding up the two deck lift sections and I splashed them with paint. Then I lost my shop space for various reasons. One third of the baffle is missing. Bought a piece of steel to shape in its place.

The castors and caster/deck mounting plate holes are a mess. I am no welder so this project just completely stalled.

Here is a shot of the missing baffle. The front edge of the deck is very thin. You can see a split in the center behind the front roller. It became overwhelming for me so I just put it on the back burner. I debated hiring the welding repair of all the deck issues but it seemed very cost prohibitive.

So one day I was searching the website of one of the sponsors- Patton Acres. I found one solution to my problem for this project. After discussing it with the wife (more than once:Pray:) I took action.

Yes. This is a NOS Haban 374 deck complete with lift and mule drive (not in picture). The idler pulley and front roller were robbed at one point but everything else including belts is there. I have to tell you, the Indian Jones in me keeps saying, "It belongs in a museum."

I had a nice visit with Mr. Patton. I appreciate very much his time and discussion of everything Cub Cadet. Thank you Mr. Patton. :buttrock:

That's cool!! But it's like cheating isn't it? :biggrin2:
Bet you wish you had some grass right now!

jaynjeep 01-14-2017 11:35 PM

WOW Steve... That thing is nice!! I had eyeballed it a few times on Mr Pattons site... Glad you got it!!:beerchug:

your original one can be fixed though... I had a bunch of caster holes wallowed also.. but with some careful welding and drilling I got them all tightened up like new!

Have fun with the NEW 374!! Bet you got the only new one left!

zippy1 01-14-2017 11:44 PM

Holy smoke Steve, that's a gem.:beerchug: Congrats...
Pretty cool to see one in brand new, must be (don't know the word) to actually own it. SWEET!!:beerchug:

CubDieselFan 01-15-2017 05:47 PM

I saw that on Rick's site. I bet you have the last NOS Haban left.

DieselDoctor 01-15-2017 08:34 PM

WOW! That's really cool Steve! Shoot us some pics when you get it mounted up. That is sweet!

Dirty Steve 01-15-2017 08:45 PM

It is kind of bitter sweet. I am elated to own it. Don't get me wrong. But if it is the last NOS Haban 374 than it seems shameful to belt it up and start mowing. Like Indy said, " It belongs in a museum" keeps running through my feeble mind.

Mr. Patton suggested if I intended to use it then bead blast all the paint off and paint it with better quality paint. :Unknown: Also placing seam sealer to the notorious deck top seam.

jaynjeep 01-15-2017 08:49 PM

You can use it Steve... Taken care of it should last for MANY years.. Those things are built like Tanks!!:beerchug::beerchug:

But I know what you mean! It would be hard to put it to work!:beerchug:

ken6x6 01-15-2017 08:53 PM

that's a beauty!

i bet you will have a smile from ear to ear when you fire that deck up for the FIRST time.

Got a few irons in the fire this week. I am on vacation. Going after painting this deck finally. I had painted the pulley covers, tensioner bracket, and lift bracket 18 months ago.

So I cut loose with the wire cup wheel today. I did not realize there was a crack and a weld broken loose. Hoping to get my brother to welding tomorrow so I can paint this Friday or Saturday. There was alot of rust under the belt covers and especially the lift braket and tensioner bracket. No, it is not going to be perfect. It will be a worker.

Oak 07-13-2018 05:29 AM

Looks good Steve. Yes, those cracks show up after the paint comes off.

ACecil 07-13-2018 12:28 PM

Looking good, Steve!

Sam Mac 07-13-2018 01:29 PM

Your just having way too much fun. :biggrin2:

Looks like Rustoleum Rust metal Primer.. Great material for this.. I like to use it with Rustoleum's specialty reducer rather than acetone. Sprays much nicer.

Same spray booth I have....:biggrin2:

And the booth was hot at 87 degrees and low humidity today. Of course the paint is relatively soft but dried well given the heat and sun. Got help to carry it inside to my shed few minutes ago. Beer 30 right now and I hope the clock is stuck!!!:beerchug::beerchug::beer2:

Works well for motorcycle parts too

Picture of your NOS Haban deck reminds me of mine. I still have a yellow Haban 60 NOS Still mounted on its original crate. Also have an NOS 54". ran across them separately both at very good prices. Still maintaining my 48" (refurbed it a number of years ago) and am getting ready to do a make 1 out of 2 60's. yep, I need to post pix but those are buried deep and hard to get out.
