Too many hours on 3165?
 

I am looking at getting 3165 54" deck and blower. It has 850 hrs. on it.
My question is how many hours is too many before it starts needing major repairs. Like the hydraulics.

I have a 2155(42" deck) for mowing and 2165 for blowing snow. Was looking to get it all on one tractor.

Am grateful for any help.

Motor has reached it's half-life.

Motors have no exact life expectancy. It has a lot to do with the owners maintenance and care. One of mine has nearly 900 hours on it and it runs strong, starts easily and uses no oil. If the price is right, and it is in good condition, I wouldn't worry too much about 850 hours.

Depending on price I'd get it.

I'll disagree, they do. I have looked at countless Cubs in the last year and a half or more, hundreds for sale, I have found only ONE that claimed to have 3000 hours and it was a commercially used 1872. Please point me to one or two with more than 1800 original hours? I'd love to have someone prove me wrong. On that note my 1811 went at 1856 hours, gov and valve, of which I purchased from the original owner who had it serviced regularly. They have a life expectancy.

Thanks for your replies. They're asking $2100.00. Seems like a fair price to me.

Scott....I agree that they don't last forever, but they can be fixed....but as my post says...they do not have an EXACT life expectancy. :biggrin2.gif:
If it is as you say, at 850 hours a motor has reached half its life, and the average person mowing his yard less than 2 hours a week, 7 months a year, 56 hours a year, that motor could last for another 15 years. It may blow up tomorrow. I sure wouldn't worry about 850 hours on it.

My 1872 has nearly 2000 hours on the original motor...I'd have to pull a head to see if it's been apart, but...I'd say it's plausible if it was taken care of.

Very plausable and I won't argue that some will do better than 1800 hours or 2000 hours, but not the rule. There is some expectation of a life cycle, why would one care how many miles on a car?? but when buying that's the first thing everyone asks.

It's just been my observation that most never make it to 1800 hours. The M18 in my 1811 that went was tired, very tired, my KT17 runs circles around it. The KT was a low hour motor and it wasn't till I got it running in a tractor was I able to compare to a M18, I can only imagine what power a fresh M18 must have.

A lot depends on if the motor is splash or pressure lube and weither it has an oil filter. If the motor has been operated in a dusty area it will not last as long. The operator has a lot to do with how long the motor lasts.

On a Cummins Diesel you can look at the oil and tell if the driver is lugging it or not.

$2100? is it in hasting minnesota. me and my dad were gunna upgrade our 2135 and look at the 3165 in hastings but moneys sort of tight. my dad also uses a 2165 for a main mower and snowblower. its been a great machine

Nick, yes it is in Hastings. I was looking to upgrade also but, moneys tight around our house too.
