Cub "O" keeps blowing coils
 

I found an "O", runs great, just got done pulling tree limbs around with it. It died and has no spark, but this is the 2nd coil it's been through. Keep in mind, it was redone approx 10 years ago and then sat 5 years and the P.O got it to run not too long before I bought it. Any suggestions?

I will check later on this morning, but I am using genuine Koehler coils

I measured 12 volts about 11.8 at the battery not running

Oh and stupid question, but how can you tell if a coil is totally done? I'm new to electrical

Possibly the coil is not bad and it is another component in the circuit causing a no spark condition. :bigthink:

Could be too much power out of the regulator.

That would be better if it wasn't the coil

That's pretty possible, can't you adjust the output on the regulator?

He cant test it until he gets it to run, I would change the regulator and the coil before trying to start it again and hope it doesnt blow another coil.

Ive read where people have adjusted a regulator but Ive never tried myself, I figure if it isnt putting out the proper voltage then something in it is probably near ready to fail anyway so I just replace them.

Let's determine that the coil is bad before we go throwing parts @ it or guessing what the problem is, would be the sensible way to approach a no spark condition.
Check for voltage @ the coil with key on, etc. etc.

Don't replace it.... That would still be throwing parts at it. You don't know it's broken yet. If your so worried about it, just disconnect it. You don't need a charging system to start it. :Forgot:


How about testing to see if you have power to the coil, points are working and such first. You still haven't given us anything to prove you have a bad coil...

Just to give further detail, it ran, quit, had no spark, changed coil, it ran, quit, and had no spark again

Just because you replace the coil and it loses spark again doesn't prove the coil is bad. Not saying a new coil can't fail, because it can, it's just not as likely.

Disconnected grey wire from B terminal (middle connector correct? Everything including wires are painted yellow)

And, the 2nd coil wasn't new, it was off a running k241

It ran really good too, for about an hour after I changed the coil yesterday. Was pulling dead trees out of the woods. Then, I turned it off , came back out later and no start.

Are you listening? Disconnecting the charging system will not fix the issue, it will just keep it from working once the engine does start. SO... if the charging system is broken, it won't burn up the coil, IF... IF that is what has happened.

Lets work on the ignition system first shall we? That way we can get it to start.

Are you, or are you not getting 12 volts to the coil??
Are the points breaking contact or not??

Answer these questions please... then we will move on.

I just pulled points cover and the wire to the points was hold by 1 srand. Made a better connection and it fired right up. That simple........all that for a loose wire..

glad to hear you got it fixed. Most electrical problems like that are best traced by what you just did, start at the battery and keep following the current until it drops in voltage or disappears completely.

Wow. Good thing you didn't buy a new coil huh. If only you had checked it way back when we asked if the points were working.....

Yeah, thanks for the help. I actually went back to your post about the 12 volt at the coil and reread your question about the points. That's when and why I pulled the cover :bash2::biggrin2:

Like I told you lets not throw parts @ it till you find the culprit.
Now check the original coil if you still have it, there is a chance it is good. :beerchug:
