1050 Finally gets to be a GT!

Well, I aimed to put this up a while ago, but I couldn't get pics to load..... and I've been busy. Took vaca to clean out my shop building..... and I haven't worked this hard in over a year. My desk job has made me a weenie!

Anyway, I recently got a good deal on a creepy gear on E-Bay (Thanks Rescue11!!) and when it came in the mail, I was shocked to see that it was cleaned up, lubed and ready to install! I pulled the 1050 in the garage and went to town. Obviously, don't need the creeper to plow, but it does make tilling with it possible. I have to say, I'd been doing both with a hydro, and wanted to go to gear drive for garden work because of the speed consistency. Yeah.... it was much better this way. I will say, however, that I can't get a new motor in this unit soon enough. That 2B tiller was a bit too much for the tired 10hp in that tractor. I burned a pint of oil just plowing and disking! SMOKING ol' girl. I had the garden chisel plowed last fall, in the vid you can see me bouncing around. It was chiseled perpendicular to how I farm the garden.... because the 20' chisel fit better that way, lol. Next time, I'll disk it afterword. I will say, that it plowed much better this year. I was hitting the hard pan. Not now! The garden drains water much better, and it plowed up nice!

I'll probably start a 2016 garden thread, but here's some pics and a video to enjoy!

Nothing beats some seat time. Thanks for sharing the video. You guys with your plows have my interest peaked. :bigthink: Looks like too much fun! :beerchug:

Look at it this way J, you controlled the mosquito's for the early summer time...Looks like you are having fun....that's all that matters..

While reading the post regarding the perpendicular chisel plowing had me wondering the exact meaning.....the video says it all!

Looks good! Nice looking dirt. (For Illinois that is :biggrin2:)

What was it before it was a GT? :biggrin2:

Leadslingingdaddy 04-22-2016 11:57 AM

Yep, it was just a GK until now. I got it hoping to put it on garden duty. Took me what, 2 years(?), to get it all put together to be a garden worker. Sleeve hitch, spring assist, creeper.... just had to find it all and then take the time to put it together! I want one more tractor set up for garden duty. I have the tractor.... it, like all mine that are on "inactive duty", is awaiting an engine. It's a little different color though.... :biggrin2:

Thanks guys. Yes, the garden spot does have pretty good soil. That's why it's the garden! 150' away is a clay knoll.

Good looking machine! Didnt know you actually got the chance to till with it! How did you like it tilling??

Used Nightow1 122 on a #1 with both extensions and IT did not like it! Imagine a tired 10 hp would reeeeally not like the load

Need More Power OHOHOH!

J-Mech 04-22-2016 10:07 PM

I liked plowing with it.... but on the tiller it was soooo much better than a hydro. I got really tired of constantly jacking with the hydro while tilling. One speed all the time with the gear drive. Only thing I didn't like, was when I get to the end, it either takes an hour to turn around, or I have to shift gears. Oh well, guess you can't have your cake and eat it too, LOL. :biggrin2:

I'm hoping that a new 12hp with some "mods" :BlahBlah: will be enough. If it's not, I'll build a bigger one..... hehehehe. :biggrin2:

I really like mine. Outside of replacing the engine, only other thing I really want to ad is headlights. I have a set, just haven't put them on yet.

olds45512 04-22-2016 11:00 PM

what lift fits the 1050? will one from an older wf work?

zippy1 04-22-2016 11:34 PM

Well it's about time you post some pictures, and then a bonus video besides.:beerchug: Looked good Jon, but holy smoke I'd bout fell off on that ride. :biggrin2::bigeyes:

Good looking 1050 Jon! Heah it runs! My old k301 was so worn I had to jump start it with my truck! Lol good looking dirt ! That's Illinois farm ground! I'd still like a filler, my gardens not very big. I might get bigger if I ever find a tiller( I'm cheap!) have a line on a plow and cultivator for $125, might buy'me both and sell the cultivator ( I have one ). I worked my garden with my old wizard tiller and then cultivator. I have a disc, but it doesn't do very good with little weight and a manual lift even with spring assist. It will kill your arm. Thanks for sharing Jon! Have fun!

Yes, but you will need the Frankenstein bolts. The lift rod is the problem. Only one that will work in a gear drive 82 series, the one for a 582. ihccw.com carries reproduction ones now. I think I got one of the first ones.

J-Mech 04-23-2016 12:47 PM

I just remembered why I haven't put the headlights on.... The grill housing is broke. It only has two ears on it. That's why it doesn't have the mesh panel on it. The two upper ears are broke off. I need to weld some back on, and I don't have any Argon gas. I have an aluminum spool gun that I got with my Esab welder, but never leased a bottle of Argon.

It's on the "to do" list. :biggrin2:
