Tires for 1450 - setting up for tilling
I have a 1450 that came with a #2 tiller that I want to get ready to till up a garden for my wife. The tractor has original tires that sat out in the weather for decades. They are dry-rotted and don't hold air.
I want to put a set of lug tires on the rear and tri rib tires up front. I have some questions: For the rear tires: I am looking at a set of Deestone 23x10.5-12 tires http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-23X10-50-1...QAAMXQMTlRbHdk Will they fit under the fenders? Should I go with 6 ply or 4 ply tires? Which would be better and why? What size tires will fit the rims on my 1450? The original tires are 16x6.8-8. Any suggestions for tires? Thanks, Bob |
the 10.50's will fit under the fender but i beleive the stock size is 8.50 so the rim width wouldnt be ideal, the front tires will be 16x6.50-8 but the only tri ribs available in that size are firestones and there $70 each. i suggest you take a look at these as a cheaper alternative http://www.millertire.com/products/i...70-60-8-6-ply/ many members have them and say there great.

Stock rears on a 1450 are 23 x 10.50 -12.

Vredesteins
I run the Vredesteins on the front of my 332 with Firestones on the back. You can't go wrong with the Vredesteins. They give great flotation and I have no problems turning. The 332 does however have power steering. The Vredesteins give it that "big" tractor look that I remember as a kid (long time ago) plowing with a 966 International.

Deestone tires are under sized compared to other brands. a 10.50 tire is slightly bigger than a 8.50 of another brand. Check around on the web, there's a lot of people that have said this. Mike

Thanks for all the suggestions. Are there any other alternatives I should look at? |
Cant beat the Deestones on price, $130 a pair at my local tire store. They are a little shorter than others.

Am I better off with 4 ply or 6 ply tires?
|
I have an IH Cub Cadet 128 with a #2 tiller. I have a good set of original 16 X 6.50-8 front tires on it.
I have a set of this style from my 149 http://www.millertire.com/products/l...f-saver-4-ply/ The tires from 149 steer better. I have a 2 sets of this style tire. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...turftire02.jpg One set is 23-10.50-12 and the other set is 23-8.50-12. I plan to use the 23-10.50 on my 128/tiller set up to help prevent soil compaction. You do not need a 6 or 8 ply rear tire on your Cub Cadet. The higher the ply the harder they are to install. Look at the load rating on the sidewall. The 4 ply is more than enough to handle anything you put on your Cub Cadet. I prefer 2 ply rating. |
I also use the tractor with my rear scraper. The original turf tires spin pretty easy. I wanted to get lug tires to try and get some more use out of the scraper.

The 1450 rolled out of the factory with:
Front: 16x6.50-8 Rear:23x10.50-12 Both were two ply rated. Four ply would be more than adequate. Six ply would be over kill and an extremely rough ride. :IH Trusted Hand: |
Thanks for the information Roland. The tires on my tractor match your data.
I hear that the Deestones run small. What's the largest Deestone lug tire that will go on my 1450? |
I am NOT a fan of Deestone, in that they are made in China.
I prefer Firestone or Carlisle tires, in that, as far as I know, made here in the USA. :American Flag 1: |

I run the 10.50's on my 129, 1450, & 784. The float and grip is good. The only way I would consider the 8.50 is in the winter time for snow traction. Haven't gone that route yet. I run 10.50's with chains and have no problem(s). I like the Ag tires for mowing lawn in that one doesn't get "turf burn" from when turf tires slip and burn away the lawn. The only disadvantage that I see with Ag tires, if your lawn is "wet and soft" in the spring time, the tires can & do leave the "lug imprint" in the lawn. Usually that smooths out over the course of the summer.

I'll look for 10.5 tires. No snow in the California central coast.

I know you were asking about the Deestone, but just thought I'd throw that out there... On a tiller tractor, traction isn't a big deal because the tiller is pushing the tractor, not like with a moldboard plow where the tractor "needs" traction to pull... |

I want to use the box scraper with this tractor too so traction is an issue. I'm not worried about snow. |
I had a set of deestones on my 782 and didn't care for them much. They do run small both diameter and width. I prefer the Carlisle

I tilled the garden last weekend and the #2 tiller worked great! I still have the original leaking, checked and dry-rotted tires on the 1450. I haven't used a tiller behind a CC before and I was impressed. My wife was too. She says you should have your garden in by April 1st around here. I'm originally from Illinois and haven't planted a garden in years so I believe her. I'm used to getting it in sometime in May. |
