1872 winter project
 

Dug into the 1872 yesterday, and went full out disassemble mode today.:biggrin2:
I've got engine leaks out of every place possible... A lot of debris around the stator, but nothing in the flywheel shroud. So started by pulling the engine, then figured I may as well get the fenders off and see what's lingering under them.
Surprised it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Bonus, trunnion is in very good condition:beerchug:
Now to get a day above freezing to pressure wash the tractor. But in the meantime start disassembling the engine.

Looks like good bones to work with. How many hours on the tractor?

Great start, can't wait to see how the 1872 turns out!

I can see a nice BIG V-Twin re-power with a CV drive line and a set of rearend braces for this project. Topped of by a nice paint job. :bigthink:

I was checking the condition of your paint it looked really good as far as I could see. I'd be a lot farther on my rebuild if I didn't have to worry about repainting mine. How far are you going to tear into your motor? rebuild?

Well, that depends I guess is my best answer. I need to clean it up and see what all needs to be replaced. It ran pretty good as far as I am concerned, so to be honest, I don't know.:bigthink:

And the next project begins. :beerchug:

Got some more of the oil seeping pig apart today. I swear there isn't a inch on this thing that isn't covered in oil...:bigthink:

looks oily,maybe it is coming from the fuel pump gasket,

And the valve covers, and the governor shaft, fill neck...... :bigeyes:

It will never rust, the oil companies love you. Oh yeah and your helping my Exxon stock. :biggrin2:

Lord knows it needs all the help it can get right now...... :angry:

Soooooooo true.

Well I decided to pull the pin and order the replacement Vanguard from Small Engine Warehouse. It "should" be here by the end of the week...
Just not in the mood to deal with everything that's needed to bring the mag back up to "right", it's tired, leaks out of every gasket and seal... Thought the heck with it, life's to short, live for today and be happy:beerchug:

It'll be like a new machine! Is there some kind of an adapter kit you have to buy along with the engine to make it all work?

No. I talked to a member who has done the swap, and it's pretty much a "bolt in". With a few things needed, but nothing major.

That where I was at with my 782, then the 1772 popped up for less than what the repower kit would have been, so I went with it instead.
(I know I am an anomaly around here, only wanting to have 1 tractor and all! LOL!)

Ol George got my 782, he is a much better wrench than I am and he is still not sure why the oil pressure is fluctuating.

I loved the sound of the opposed twin Kohler, when it is up to full song, but I was working on it too much. I work 6 / 7 days a week, when I need the tractor to run, it needs to run. Not need this thing needs tinkered with, or crap it's low on oil or ..................blah blah blah

I'm sure when I retire, I'll keep a couple more around, just not right now.

Will be watching this re-power work your doing. Yea that engine looks to have some issues in regards to oil leaks.

Cleaned up the firewall as well as the battery box by sanding and wire wheeling then adding some paint...
Then the big white truck showed up with a box for me!:beerchug: Small Engine Warehouse delivery.:beerchug:

Thanks guys, but the big job comes up tomorrow. I need to pressure wash the tractor outside in 30 degree weather, not looking forward to that... cause ain't no way I'm puttin' the pretty engine in a dirty tractor.
Plus I need to attend to a few things before the engine install that will make it a bunch easier, now then later.
Plus need to make a blower housing between the engine and firewall. Hey, question on the positive cable. The original isn't going to be long enough, and the one they sent along isn't either, can I splice the two together or should I run new from the back to the starter?
Told the wife what I did and she said something like. If it'll make your life easier, and your still able to cut grass, I'm in for 50% of the cost... Good woman right there:beerchug:

Todd when I repowered my 1210 I used what's called "Roll Plastic" racers use it for body stuff. Here's a link.

All you need to do is cut a strip with some shears, roll it in a tube and bolt it to the firewall. Pics are of the 1210 with the 16 HP Vanguard.
