The "Cub Ca-debt"

I use to build Customized Lawn Mowers and Tractors. I built The"Cub Ca-debt" in 2001 to show at various places and events.Such as, Auto,Truck & Tractor Shows,Cruise In's, Auto Parts Stores, Auto Dealerships, Tractor Dealerships, Home and Garden Shows.

Engine is a one of a kind SBC Reversed Rotation Stroker designed and built by me. It has a custom made gear drive timing and the camshaft is only one like it.I had it casted and ground to my specs.Tunnel Ram with 2- 650 Holley Carbs andMSD Ignition

Trans and RearEnd are modified Cub Cadet Hydrostatic

It has Power Steering,Tilt Wheel,Onboard Computer Monitoring,Turn by Turn Navigation,Voice Command,Radio with 6 Disc Changer, Flame Throwers and more.

What do you mean by "modified" transmission? What did you do to it?

With high torque of my engine,The stock Hydro couldn't flow the fluid fast enough and would only stand about 3,500 rpm's.As soon as i hit the throttle,It would blow the dipstick and all the fluid out.I completely dismantled the hydro and machined all the oil passages as far as i could and changed spring pressures and did some work to the check valves. It has been turned over 8,000 rpm's and has never leaked a drop of fluid since it was built in 2001.

J-Mech 12-30-2015 12:05 PM

The hydro wouldn't handle more than 3500 RPM's? A stock hydro turns faster than that. Why did it turning so fast blow the dipstick out? How exactly does a high torque affect a hydraulic pump?

You made the oil passages larger? Which ones? How did you modify the check valves? Got any pics of what you did to the pump?

john hall 12-30-2015 12:24 PM

Not that anyone would use it, but is the deck hooked up to a PTO or is on there just for looks? I can see where this was a project not to keep an expense record on!

With the torque of the engine and speed of how fast it revved the hydro would not get the fluid fast enough through the charge pump.It was turning faster than it could supply fluid to the pistons and causing cavatation which filled the fluid with bubbles and caused internal pressure and blew the fluid out. Machined out the oil passages on Part D & E in the picture and i added a second spring inside the originals to make them stiffer.Replaced the springs on Part C with stiffer ones and bored seat a little where the ball fits.Milled out oil passeges on Part 35 where charge pump mounts to it. Replaced the charge pump spring in Part F with a softer one.(NOTE:After i first did all the mods,The hydro would not work at all until i changed this spring with a weaker one)

Deck does work.

What did you do to deal with the rotation of the engine? Kinda surprised you used a 1440 with the Hydro Gear pump rather than something with a Sundstrand for your starting point.

I reversed the rotation of the engine by using a custom made gear drive and having a custom camshaft casted and ground for it.Also the starter drives from top rear of the engine now. I started with the 1440 hydro because had a new one and i knew they were tough.

That was at a Chevy Dealership about a year after i built it. It will run fast that but i had it programmed to about 1/4 throttle on that day so the kids could drive it too.

Some other questions please:
On the SBC, IIRR some marine engines turn reverse rotation did you use their
cam/drive/ gear setup?
Why did you change the engine rotation?
the hydro's are set up to turn either way by reversing the charge pump. :bigthink:

Yes,Some marine engines run reversed. They use several variations of timing drives, distributor gears, camshafts and reversed starters. There wasn't a set up for what i wanted to build.I used a two piece gear for the timing that when the engine is turned counter clockwise the camshaft turns clockwise. The camshaft has a reverse cut gear where the distributor mates and distributor gear is a stock. The distributor still rotates clockwise but has a different firing order. I wanted certain lift and duration also. After talking with several cam manufactures and techs,There wasn't a cam made like this,So after many phone calls one agreed to have it cast for me and grind it to my specs.
I changed rotation not only for hydro but also as where the deck could be belt driven and in the right direction.

Sam Mac 12-30-2015 08:21 PM

Guess I'm just simple, I would have turned the engine around and run the pump from the front and the PTO off the flywheel. Glad you had fun doing it the hard way. Anyway that said cool build. :beerchug:

I was going to mention this also.... Besides, the gears don't care which way they turn, so what do you mean by a "custom gear drive"?

While I'm here:
In the hydrostat, you didn't really do anything that would have solved the cavitation issue that I can see. You say you added a weaker spring to the charge pump relief, and a stiffer spring to the pistons in the pump. Then you refer to the cylinder block as "Part D & E" instead of by it's name. You say that you "milled out the oil passages", except there are no "passages" in the cylinder block.... Then you go on about changing some other stuff that really doesn't make sense at all for what you were trying to accomplish.

Lets move on to the engine that you are describing:
First off, a SBC turns counter-clockwise stock. All motors are labeled from the rear. From the rear... they turn counter-clockwise factory. Now, lets skip the description err that was made and assume that it is true that you are turning the cam opposite rotation of the crankshaft..... Why then would you need to do a reverse cut of the gear on the cam? It would have mated with the stock dist gear just fine.... but wait, you said you used the stock gear. How does that work? Reverse cut gear on the cam mated to a stock gear??? Yes, a custom cam would have had to have been made, but only because the firing order is now basically backwards. Which would not have required a custom cast, only a custom grind which would would have been ridiculously complicated for even the best of cam grinders.

Listen, I'm just going to come out and say it. Your answers are kind of sketchy and mostly vague. I agree that this machine exists, but I'm not convinced that you are the builder. All the info that you have posted can be found in various articles and sites out there on the old WWW. I will admit, with the exception of some of the pics that you posted, but I also know that ol' Google can't find EVERYTHING. Avery Allred's phone number is listed on his site. If I call it, will you answer? I'd like to have verbal confirmation that it is indeed Avery making these posts. If indeed you are the owner, I will make a public apology and we can move on. Understand that I, as a moderator and trying to validate the authenticity of your claim.

Thanks. It wasn't that bad. It was a 3 month build.

J-Mech 12-30-2015 09:47 PM

Alright guys. I spoke to Avery on the phone, and he is indeed the builder/owner of this machine.

Avery, I am sorry for the disbelief, but as I told you when we talked I just needed confirmation that you were who you said you were. That is a mighty big project/build that you did and although I still don't understand how exactly you made it happen, there it is. Carry on! No hard feelings, and again sorry for doubting!

Thanks twoton, Only other project is my C02 powered scaled '29 Ford Roadster.Worked on design and building it over 10 years. Have taken it to a couple of shows and done a little testing with different gear setups.Still have alot to do to get to where i want it.But i'm getting there slowly.
