This is my first winter with the cubs.....Can i run 5W30 oil in them?????

Sorry went brain dead...Kohler...3 12s all singles... The Cubs are a 125,126,and a 127

I am no expert cause I only run my 149 in the winter. In it I use
Kohler 10w30 oil. Change it out to 30 when days are consistently above 40-45 deg
The lighter oil really helps the starting in the cold.

This question arises often and always gets varied responses. That is why it is described in the Technical Section of the Forum (under Tractors). You should reference that to seek a response to your question. Not trying to be short with you, but trying to help you become more familiar with the forum and more resourceful.

Keep in mind that the 125 and 127 are hydrostats, so cold starts are more difficult as the hydraulic fluid is thicker viscosity. However, some guys have heated garages/storage facilities or they run heated magnets on the bottom of their rear end of their cubs. I run 10w30 pure synthetic in my cubs and never had any problems with engines.

The 126 should start up a lot easier since it is a geardrive.

30wt Sgell Shell Rotella year round in my Cubs, no heated garage or block heaters. Start, give it 10 or so to warm up and get to work!

I would put money on that this is NOT a recommended winter oil choice.
In temps dropping below 32F, SAE30 is not going to be a good choice. Don't take my word on, ask Mr Google to ask Mr Kohler.

10W30 or 5w30 is the winter oils of choice.

It's too late now cause the debate has started, right after this post I'm going to start a thread on how hydros are better than gear drives.:biggrin2::biggrin2:

No, it's not meant to be a debate. Actually, there is no debate. 100% fact going by manufacturers recommendations. I could paste in the oil recommendation table in EVERY Kohler manual, but that's just too easy. I'm sure most already have it. Ignore it at your peril.

Oil brands, no that's a debate. This...not so much.

But, its your tractor, your money, your oil. SAE30W in -5F is completely anyone's choice. Have at it, roll the dice.
