Hey that looks sweet! But I have to ask, why green?
|
Wife wanted a John Deere. Life is compromise.
|
That's the best kind of JD to have!! It's not really a JD!!!:beerchug:

as someone who restores old cars, the quality of workmanship is excellent. i like the u joint driveshaft,it looks like the vanguard fits perfectly

I have Sam to thank for helping with the engine coupling. |
What is your plan for a hydro cooling fan?
|
2 piece cooling fan.
I often wonder if a cooling fan is even necessary. All three Cubs that I've bought have had so much debris an the hydro unit that I couldn't see the fins. There couldn't be much cooling going on. Still, I'll put one on. |
What did you use for a U-joint? Looks like one from a car steering shaft.
|
Exactly correct. Drilled u-joint and shaft for 1/4" spirol pin.

I've thought about using the same joints more than once. I was a little concerned about how long they will last and the lack of a grease fitting. Guess you will be able to answer that. I have a couple sets of them from my race car days sitting in a box. Please keep us posted on how they work for you. :beerchug:
|
Will do.
This one gets a Johnny Bucket Jr. I don't expect to ever run wide open throttle. I asked JB to build one with a delete for the lift actuator. I was going to use the hydraulic lift on the 782. They said no. So, I removed the hydraulic lift on the 782 and sold it. |
That driveshaft looks so simple compared to the one used on the Cyclops. No expensive grease boots, balls escaping across the floor, tiny rubber seals, etc.
I think I should have went this route when I had mine out replacing the boots and fan. I like simple. |
Good looking build. I was pretty picky when I started putting my 782 back together and a year later it still looks pretty good. But I figure, hey, it's a garden tractor and they are going to get dirty. Still, if I built another one, I'd probably do it the same way.

So what did your Vanguard come off of...or is it new?

The seller threw in a starter and fuel pump. It was pretty dirty. Cleaned it up, put in new spark plugs, put it on my test stand and it fired right up. Has good compression. Don't have much money in either the cub or the engine. Got lucky this time. |
It looks really nice so far, personally I like the sound/smoothness of the opposed twins.
Has anyone re powered a wide frame but not a spread frame, I.E. (14-1650) with a vanguard and been able to put the side panels on? That would make those old shakers smooth, with newer engines:bigthink: |

Thanks J-Mech. Had a bet with the wife you'd make some sort of negative comment about the green paint before the week-end. You're so predictable!
|
Well if you were the first to paint one green we should drag you to the town square and throw rocks at you, but half of the green ones at garden tractor pulls have Cubs under the green sheet metal.
Doesn't take away from your fine work though, it looks great.:beerchug: |

I had wondered the same thing... A vanguard or command in a 1450/1650 and still get the side panels on? Anybody tried it? Terry, I agree... most all the other colors at the tractor pulls have cub mechanicals underneath! They don't like to talk about it though! |
I was just wondering as the V twins are narrower than the opposed K's/Magnums series, :bigthink:just a curiosity that's all.
iI's ok if no one has an experience with one. |
Looks like the side panels won't fit , and the hood brace and fuel tank won't work either.
