Hydro Whine

I have noticed over the years of collecting tractors , etc. some tractors the hydr is louder than others etc, what actually causes the hydro to make noise etc, and why are some louder than others ? thnx in advance

Can be a multiple of things. When I picked up an 1872 about 2 years ago. The hydro whine was so loud you swear you need hearing protectors when running it. I found out shortly after getting it that some of the bolts on the tunnel cover were loose. With the tractor running, downward pressure on the cover made this noise from to a normal level. With the cover loose, it was acting like a sounding board and amplifying the hydro noise.

Cavitation (air bubbles, foaming oil) I think but you better wait for an expert
That's what someone told me

The wrong type of oil will do it also.

Now a sure fired way to eliminate your Hydro whine is to load the whiner in your truck or on a trailer,
and bring it to me. make sure you leave the keys too, and when you get back home you wont here that awful Hydro whine. :beer2: problem solved....:biggrin2:
Always trying to help:biggrin2:

My 1211 doesn't whine. But I haven't ever heard a hydro combine that didn't!

Terry C 07-16-2015 09:48 PM

My 129 and 123 are totally silent unless you really throw the lever fast. My 149 whines most of the time.

Tankman 07-16-2015 10:21 PM

My 1641 and I both like wine. You don't??? :beer2:

jaynjeep 07-16-2015 11:06 PM

Ive had them both.. some whine and some don't.. I always figured the whine may be due to a worn pump or the wrong oil.. But like one other member said... every hydro IH combine or farm tractor that I ever operated whines like crazy...yet they perform very well..

My 1864 whined terribly when I got it. You had to wear ear plugs it was so loud. I changed the fluid and filter and cleaned the rear out and that cured it.

CubDieselFan,

Just curious, what fluid did you use? Cub Cadet Hydraulic transmission fluid, Hytran, or something else?

rdehli 07-17-2015 12:00 AM

Our large sprayers at work whine, so does our combine . goes with the territory

ol'George 07-17-2015 09:20 AM

I will say this, in cold temps cavitation ( noise) is a problem with higher viscosity fluids.
Hy guard(low viscosity) and hytran is quieter in cold temps.
I have like most others, heard 2 identical hydros with a big variance in wine.
Given identical specks in manufacturing of parts, I always wondered about that.
The last hydro I had apart, I checked the piston lengths from slipper to piston head and found a variance, always wondered it that had something to do with it, or if it was in the valve plates.:bigthink:

I used Hytran, because this is my worker. It looked like it had Hytran in it before as well. The oil was well used and had some build up in the bottom of the case.

Tractor for sure, there's no such thing as wife that doesn't whine.

Crazy talk sir. Women are like tractors with the steering linkage broke, you keep trying to turn the wheel and it just goes wherever it wants. And once you're married you're stuck in the drivers seat with no brake :biggrin2:

That's just perfect. :beerchug:

ol'George 07-20-2015 08:47 AM

Reminds me of the picture I saw in the local elevator some years ago of
an old John Deere "A" tractor without a steering wheel or seat.
says:
"for sale, perfect for the man who has lost his ass and don't know which way to turn"
------Still laugh when I think of it.:biggrin2:
