Is there a GOOD voltage regulator available?
 

Does anyone know of a GOOD voltage regulator for our tractors with the starter/generator ? I have bought two of the cheap ones on ebay recently and one charges too little and the other charges too much (on the same tractor).These cheap aftermarket,made in India regulators seem to be inferior.

I get mine from NAPA. Cheap is almost never better...... or equal.

Napa I'd also where I've gotten a replacement before....but have you tried opening up the cheapies? They may be adjustable. But I agree with jmech. Sometimes ya definatly get what ya pay for

It would be been cheaper for you had you just bought the CC V/R in this first place. Now you have two POS to throw away and still have to buy something.

IMHO, the NAPA VR896 is a decent replacement.

I guess I'm weird because I buy 40 plus year old Delco VRs. I have seen the insides of the chinesium and mexinesium ones and I'm not a fan. They don't compare, not even close.

So,Alvy,,,Do you have a way to refurbish/refresh/rebuild/adjust/tweak/massage/coax/revive or otherwise renew the 40-50 year old Delco regulators,or do you just get lucky and find ones that work well?
I have a few old ones around,can they be revived?

I used the links in this thread to help me adjust my voltage regulator, specifically post 17 and 34.

I had a no charge issue. I cleaned the internal contacts, grounding surface and wire terminals. I was then getting 16+ volts at the battery. I verified my wiring was correct and not the issue. I then followed the adjustment directions in the above links to get 13.8-14 at wot. Been keeping my battery charged ever since.

Although I do keep a cheapy new one on the shelf just in case, I gotta agree with the other guys.

Since I sometimes have a hard time "getting it" out of a book and most of the written material regarding voltage regulators is crap, it took a really long time for me to have a decent understanding of how these things actually work and what to do to make them work right. I still don't profess to know everything about them though, especially since there are several different styles.

Read the material the guys posted and you should be able to figger out what you need to do to make them work again. Although sometimes they do shoot craps and you just can't make them work.

Try the "extension cord" idea, it does make life easier.

The OP wants to know where to buy a good VR. The place I suggested and use has been in business for 30 years. If you buy from Ebay, you don't know what you will get. Use a legitimate business. They have Delco/Massey....if that's your pleasure.

I got the VR896 from NAPA today,hooked it up and...SUCCESS! It gives me a charge of 14 volts at operating speed. And I was pleasantly surprised,it is made in USA !!!!!!!!
Lesson learned,no more cheap junk for me. I will try the adjustments on some old Delco's sometime when I have time.

Woody I searched their site and found the V/R for $26.00 with free shipping and it says aftermarket which yes the napa one is too but price is quite different and made in USA Tim says. Not knocking it but curious and wondering where it's made? Tim is the napa one an Echlin brand?

They have a tech number to call. 30 years don't matter?

Alvy, The VR896 I got is branded NAPA/Echlin. It says MADE IN USA on the box and on the VR itself. I don't now the actual retail price as I got a discount. I believe they sell for neighborhood of $63-$68.

They don't actually build the parts, just sell them. So, no 30 years don't mean jack. NAPA has been around way longer.
