Oops, I did it again: Cub Cadet 1650 w/attachments

After redoing all of the associated ISO-mount stuff on my buddy's 1450 a few years ago (which is still working and running great) and having owned 2 1250s and very nice 1450, I decided to take a BTDT approach and swear off all future Quietline purchases. However... this 1650 with attachments came up (5 hours round trip smack in the middle of rush hour, no less) and I decided to bite. I was really after the #2 tiller, but I got everything you see (and even some stuff you don't see) for little more than market rate for a complete tiller setup. Of course I'm missing the long belt and mule drive with the solid pulleys, but everything else is there and the tiller spins free and was stored inside. I haven't had a minute to even get everything off the trailer yet, but visually the tiller looks pretty good from others I've seen for sale. I'm still debating, but I think it will wind up on my worker 125 with hydro lift, so I would have had to get a new belt anyway. I have a couple of spare mule drives, so I may just need to track down some solid pulleys and threaded-bolt tension adjusters.

The other goodies include a lightly used snowplow, chains in an IH burlap bag (nice!) and a PECO Vac that is responsible for the sooty fender and melted right-side taillight :bash2: Everything is there for the PECO Vac, so hopefully it will be a selling point for the tractor.

The 1650 itself needs to be completely gone through. I was pleasantly surprised to find the motor mounts to be solid and secure and the muffler box to be in great condition. The 50A deck looks promising and spins free and quiet but that's all I know about it for now. The X factor is that the tractor threw the driveshaft for some reason. Broke the adapters on each end and tore up the flex discs. Put some unsightly bends in the hydraulic lines and punched a hole in the hydro filter. I had expected the ISO mounts to be shot and the motor pitched at a jaunty angle that would have caused this, but no, it's right where it's supposed to be. The input shaft on the hydro pump spins free, so I'll just have to put it all back together and see how she runs with a good shaft installed. I'll get the tractor pulled down to the frame and power-washed and cleaned up over the next week and see what I have to work with. I think there's good bones under the dirt and grime and soot, and if the ISO mounts truly turn out to be good, I'm several steps ahead in this project. It did come with the side panels and tunnel cover, and it still has the belt guard for the tiller attached to the tranny.

More pics to follow once I get her unloaded...

Tom,
Congrats on the score. I was in the middle of getting directions from the seller when he told me he had just sold it. I was waiting for it to show up on the site. For the price you paid it was a great deal "maybe even a Lew deal". Like you, I was after the attachments, the tractor was a bonus. Glad it want to an OCC member. :beerchug:

Nice find !!!

The driveshaft didn't break the steering box ?? That is another thing the driveshaft usually gets.

bkw3614 05-31-2015 10:53 PM

Great find, Tom! Despite what many say, I think a Quietline is a great tractor, once the ISO mounts are installed properly and adjusted to the machine after break-in.

I wish I could find a tractor deal so well accessorized. You made out well.

sawdustdad 06-01-2015 10:53 AM

Congrats on that haul. Did you come to VA to get it? (only because you beat richardnoggin to the punch)

Hey, all:

I did indeed manage to be the early bird on this one. Mind you, I've had plenty of deals slip away from me over the years so I was happy to have the chance to act on this one. And yes, it was a brutal 5 hour trip from Baltimore to Northern Virginia (Manassas) right in the middle of rush hour to ensure that I could put my hands on it, but its been worth it so far.

I got everything pulled apart and power-washed yesterday. The tractor cleaned up well, but I am going to do a full upgrade/replacement of the engine cradle and ISO mounts. It had lost one motor mount bolt, and another was loose, so the rails were definitely beginning to spread, as evidenced by the wear on the axle crossmember in the photo. I'm ordering the $28 set off ePay today, and I'll be on the hunt for a piece of steel stock to do the engine cradle mod since the pre-fabbed cradles are NLA from Patton Acres. I need to inspect the oil pan itself today and determine if the motor mount holes are clean enough to proceed with or if I should get a cast iron pan while the motor is out and everything is accessible.

The 50A deck is in really good shape and is just missing a grease zerk on the left spindle. Remember I said the guy gave me a bunch of belts that I really couldn't figure out what they were for? Turns out is WAS the long belt for the tiller, it was just coiled and twisted up to look like 3 belts:beerchug: The tiller itself cleaned up well and the tines and rotating assembly look and sound good. Just gotta make a mule drive out of the spare parts I have laying around.

It looks like the driveshaft adapter on the tranny end had been cracked for a while judging by the different rust on the two adapters, and eventually let go and caused the front one to fail and the flex discs to rip out. The hydro filter was cracked and cocked and I feared it may have damaged the mounting threads on the tranny, but all was well after I got it off. I had a spare CC filter on hand from a previous project and once I installed it, there were no more Hy-Tran leaks. So, I'll be chasing parts down this week and next, getting the cradle mod fabbed up, and no doubt a trip up to Ray Weaver's for all of the other stuff to make this a nice tractor again.

sawdustdad 06-01-2015 03:52 PM

You couldn't pay me enough to make that trip in rush hour traffic. That place (No.VA.) is a zoo. I grew up in Alexandria. DC Beltway @ rush hour=misery.

Rural central VA is soooo much more relaxed...

But glad it worked out for you!

I've seen some cub cadets advertised on Craigslist in Ellicott city. Is that you?

105_Tom 06-01-2015 04:36 PM

Yeah, Frank, that's almost always me that's listing Cubs in Ellicott City. Yesterday, I finally sold the 122 I had listed. I dropped the price to $275 and got $375 for it :bigthink: The father-son duo that came to get it wanted it for a pulling tractor in the 12hp class. They didn't want the mower deck and asked if I'd remove the deck and hangar for them. I scoffed to myself thinking "great, more inventory to store/find a place for" but pulled it for them and knocked $25 off the price. Last night I was literally sitting down at the computer to delete the add off CL, and another guy called about the 122. I apologized, but asked him if he was looking for anything in particular, and low and behold, he had just wanted a deck and mule drive for his own 122! I said wow, we must both be living right these days... He'll be by Tuesday morning to pick it up for $125 :biggrin2:

Now, is that a reverse Lew Deal or what?!

darkminion_17 06-01-2015 07:53 PM

Sounds like a lew deal to lew.
That is a nice deck you got there and the tiller is in great shape, when you step in it, it sticks to your shoe...

zippy1 06-02-2015 01:23 AM

Nice looking 1650 Tom, and load of goods...:beerchug:
Aren't they a dirty bunch when you gets the engine and pan off?:bigthink:

Progress

7 Attachment(s)
Been working on the 1650 as time and weather permits. Lots of progress, although it seems like little steps at times. I got all of the little stuff I needed for the tractor last week. Small stuff like another taillight, another lens to replace the cracked one off the left rear, a speed control knob, side panel spring, cast oil pan, fuel cap/gauge, and a driveshaft with all of the couplings. I rebuilt the driveshaft tonight with 4 new flex discs and a new plastic fan. Everything looks good, but I need a picture of the motor end of the driveshaft coupling to make sure I get everything right on mine. It was apart when I got it and I don't have anything to reference by. If anyone has a file pic, please post it. I put the cast oil pan on and the internals looked great on this motor. I have the rails stripped where the flat bar will be welded tomorrow and the old pan will be used to hold the rails in place for the cradle mod. I'll also have the welder tack a piece of keystock on the trunnion where it's worn grooves in the outer edge. I also aligned the front wheels today and tightened up the tie rod ends. All four castle nuts were finger loose after the cotter pins were removed. This caused most of the excessive play in the steering. The 50A deck got a new grease zerk where one was missing on the left spindle, but I still need to remove and sharpen the blades before it goes back under the tractor. Oh, and I also did the lift handle flip. It's so easy; every Quiet Line should have this mod done to it. So much easier when plowing or using a snowthrower.

As for the ISO mounts, I've decided to reuse my uppers and use 4 of the 8 that came in the ePay kit. My uppers are in excellent shape, so I'll move them to the bottom and put new uppers in from the kit. Plus then I'll have 4 mounts on standby incase I should somehow wind up with another Quiet Line :Boohoo: I'll start with a thread and a half showing and go from there. After the cradle mod is done tomorrow and it gets a quick coat of CC Yellow, I'll be just about ready to start putting everything back together.

105_Tom 06-08-2015 12:15 AM

I think I figured out what I wanted to know about the front of the drive shaft. It should only have 1 flex disc, right? Two on the tranny end, and one up front. I can get it back together from here...

cowdiddly 06-08-2015 12:32 AM

great score! but Dont get to excited about the 50 until you pull that to pulley cover off. Some people never remove the thing and its a trash and rust magnet. I had a 50A that looked almost new until the day i took the cover off. 3 wire wheels. a tube of jb weld hot patching rust pits. welding cracks at lift pins and rear wheels. 4 rattle cans of paint, burning rusted bolts, a new tension spring, 2 new pulleys including the double (ouch) and 2 spindle bearings (double ouch), one lower bearing retainer cone (triple ouch), a belt and a ruined set of clothes later I actually have an almost new one now.

zippy1 06-08-2015 01:30 AM

1650 looks good and clean with the engine removed.
Good idea with the lift handle flip..:beerchug:

Finished!

7 Attachment(s)
She's all done! I got the cradle mod finished, keystock added to the trunnion, and driveshaft put back together. In the future with the cradle mod, I'm gonna move the flatbar forward another 1/4 inch. It's just a hair too close to the pto belt for my liking, but it's running without issue for now. Everything went together smoothly. I added oil and cleaned the carburetor, and it fired right off and runs great! Initially I had a hydro leak at the left line coupling at the transmission, but I was able to align it a bit better and snug the fitting, and now all is dry. The lights work, alternator charges, tranny is good, and the shaking is minimal at idle and non-existent at full throttle. I had to snug down the ISO mounts after the weight of the engine was placed on them, but I'm happy with the operation so far. I even had a spare front tire on hand for the right side one that was worn down so bad from being mis-aligned. The hour meter runs smoothly at 420 hours, so I have to believe that the tractor has around 1020 hours on it from the wear on the trunnion and the front tires. The 50A deck is super quiet and cuts well, although as is typical with the 50" decks, leaves a little in the middle in the really heavy thick grass. I'm really impressed with how well this tractor cleaned up and how well it runs and how solid it feels. I had planned on turning this 1650 right back out for sale, but I think I'm gonna have to play with it for a while.

sawdustdad 06-15-2015 12:02 PM

Nicely done! Looks good for another 40 years!

Darrell 06-15-2015 12:58 PM

Looks really good !!

Maybe you could grind some of the brace where the belt is running close .

Roy Najecki 06-15-2015 01:20 PM

I agree that the QuietLines are maybe the best tractor Cub Cadet made, once you do the engine cradle upgrade, muffler box brace, and ISO mounts are adjusted. They are smoother and quieter than the wide frames, and easier to work on than the 82 Series and without the potential problems of their KT or Magnum engines.

Were the QuietLine Kohler engines made without the problematic governor gears found on the Wide Frames?

There's no doubt they're the best, despite their problems! :biggrin2:
