Need to confirm a bolt head size
I'm working on my 782's front grill and I need to remove the 4 12 point bolts that hold it to each side of the front frame at the bottom. I think I need a 9/32" 12 point. Can anyone confirm so that I can order the correct socket?
thanks |

I just checked mine and the grill housing (tag 1 in the illustration) is held on by four six-point 5/16" bolts and a 1/2" deep socket is needed to take them off.

from the looks of it, I think it's a 12 point bolt.
They all appear to be original, so maybe IH changed things up at some point. |
According to the Parts Manuals, both the on line version as well as the paper version, Plus both IH & CCC productions....they used 710-0376 bolt. It is a standard Hex Head Bolt, 5/16-18 x 1", grade 5.
I find NOTHING with any reference to a 12 point bolt head. |

i have also seen those bolts in the same place on the 82 series and later tractors joe allen

me too on the 782 IH built.

I too have seen 12pt head bolts there. They are 3/8" 12pt.
|
they take a 5/16" 12 point socket

Yes, just a regular 12 point socket normally used on hex heads. http://www.f-gear.co.jp/deen_new/soc...ges/spline.jpg |
My 982 had 12 point heads as well. Never could figure out the logic behind it. Maybe something to do with efficiency/ease of installation on an assembly line?

As an educated guess..........
There came a point during production, that the normal Hex Head Bolt was running low or were out of, and the (IH or CCC) frantically found a Vendor that could supply a substitute for the least cost. And that is what they came up with. I am sure, since the Parts Manuals substantiate it, that the original part called for was the Hex Head Bolt. |

Good post, thanks. |
Didn't all Cub Cadets bolts have either IH or WP (the West Pullman, Chicago area IH factory) on the bolt heads? From what I've read around the early 1970's they removed the IH marking and replaced it with WP so they could sell fasteners without the well-known IH trademark to other manufacturers.
