Progress on the 1864

The 1864 is coming along nicely. This thing was a mess, I found two loose magnets in the flywheel just like PaulS describes in his "near disaster" post. Glued them back in with 2 part epoxy and its just like new.
New front and rear seals, governor shaft seal, head gaskets, valve covers, etc.
Another couple of weekends and I'll get some much anticipated seat time on her. Can't wait!

I give up. Why did you take the crankcase cover off?

Bugjunkie66 04-12-2015 02:27 PM

Really just to look things over, clean and change the governor shaft seal. I always feel better when I know what is going on inside of my engines. I blame it on OCD!

J-Mech 04-12-2015 02:35 PM

When you buy a new car, do you open those engines up too? Just curious.

Unless you totally disassemble everything, you won't see much. Can't see the pistons, valves seats, crank journals, rod "bearing"...... You can see it doesn't have any broken parts, but if it runs that would have been a good assumption. Really just a waste of time and money to open up a motor "just to look". Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to save you money. :beerchug:

I am not one of them but many do it just for "the children" and some do it for "peace of mind".

He did a nice clean up job.

Thought I would post some photos of the final stages of resurrecting this gal. She is ready to kill some grass and did a great job this week on her maiden voyage.
Here are some photos of when I pulled her out of the wilderness as she was "becoming one with the earth, about 18 months ago". a couple of pics on the trailer as she met her new home (shop) and finally some 54GT deck pics (all stainless hardware, new bearings and races, etc).
Yes, she still needs some plastic and decals, but that will come in time, I have a smoker to pay some attention to now.....

It looks good! Very nice job on the deck.

Looks great.:High5:

Looks good. I have the same deck under a 1641. I ended up removing the belt guards on the deck because they pack full of grass. Now I can just hit it with the leaf blower when I'm done mowing.

I just removed mine.

Good job on the 1864. The deck turned out nice.

Looks good

Did you paint or powder coat the top of the deck?

What did you coat the bottom of the deck with?

Bugjunkie66 06-10-2016 07:11 PM

I coated the inside of the deck with Rustoleum "Rust Reformer" after it was taken down to clean bare steel on the advise of The Saturn V. This was followed up with a self etching primer and then Valspar wet paint as the top and bottom color coats.
Thanks for all of the compliments everyone!
