Hood Latch

I wanted to share something we came up with as another way keep the hood from hitting the front grill. This is on my 105. I don't know what all other models use the exact same hood but maybe someone here will step in and let us know. The brackets are 18 gauge stainless steel. They fit/pivot over the embossed/raised area where the hood bolts to the cast iron grill. Two tabs on each bracket touch the hood and one tab touches the cast iron front for the stop. It took 3 tries to get all the angles exactly right. Since the brackets were a loose fit, they did tend to rattle at first. Next, I sprayed them with white "plasti dip". About 5 coats. Next I spray painted them with the Valspar IH white I used on the hood. No more rattle. Time will only tell how long the plastic will last. I would have preferred to dip them but I could not find any of the liquid in white around here, only black. I've always been impressed with how thick it goes on. I dipped my PTO handle in it. The brackets are not really noticeable and it sure beats dinging the hood up on the front grill. What do you guys think? If there is enough interest from this post, I can post something in the for sale section and run some more.

I bet you could sell plenty of those, nice work. :beerchug:

Nice work, can't tell from the pics how far forward the hood is, can the wind push it back closed?

Yes, I should have included a picture of the angle. The bracket allows the hood to go 10 degrees past 90. We felt this was a good angle. We could make the leg that stops the hood a little longer and that would let the hood go down further. 10 degrees seems fine for everything I'm going to be doing. Do you think it needs to go down further?

I would deff be interested in a couple pair if you go into production mode. Nice job.:beerchug:

Way cool bud! Nice work! :IH Trusted Hand:

Very impressive!
I like how you did it with no alterations to existing metal.

If they will do the same on the 127 vintage series, I am in for two pair.

steved 04-03-2015 02:01 PM

Thanks for all the comments! I'm not familiar with all the other models like the 127. This was my Grandfather's Cub and the only one I've actually ever laid eye's on, other than the one's sold in big box stores. It's been a huge learning curve for me and my two helpers. I think we are all disappointed this project is coming to an end! the Maybe someone can give us some help as far as which models have this cast iron front and the same hood.

Me too, another great design. Someone else has one on here as well that's a cool set up, I think it was a two piece deal that uses the top v reg bracket mount bolt?

drglinski 04-03-2015 06:54 PM

I also think these are a great idea, and would likely be interested in a set as well.

Great design! I may have to do something similar to my 100 when I paint it.

Yosemite Sam 04-03-2015 08:05 PM

Wow, Those are really great.

cadzag72 04-03-2015 08:41 PM

Impressive!

Yes Alvy, I saw that design here also but we decided to go another route. One of the guys helping me is great with thinking out of the box. The joke around the shop is if it moves he wants to put a cement mixer on. Just our way of saying he wants to reinvent the wheel in a different way. This time I think he hit a home run. I bet the original IH engineers would have incorporated something like this if they had thought of it. After all the work we put into this 105, it just didn't seem right for the hood to hit metal on metal. Thanks for all the great comments! I'll be off line until Monday but keep the comments coming. What do you think about dipping in the black plasti dip for a thicker coat and no matching creme paint? I was worried the purist in the forum might not like that.

Alvy 04-03-2015 11:22 PM

I think the correct police will bow out on this one since it's such a great design. If you do your homework on the models and hood similarities you might be surprised how many of us would want some. Great work!

bkw3614 04-04-2015 12:17 PM

I hope your next project is a wide frame or a Quietline. Those type of hood retainers would work equally as well for that series.

red56turbo 04-05-2015 04:49 PM

Nice job! A little ingenuity goes along way. That's getting the job done. :beerchug:
