'95 Cub Cadet 1641

Grandson "needed" a Cub Cadet! We found a '95 1641, inexpensive for my retired low income. Picked up the tractor and now the barn work begins.

Grandson used a couple spray cans, PB Blaster on the hardware. A good start.
Then we used a grease gun on the zerk fittings. Three we saw on a downloaded owners manual, two on the drive shaft and one on the low steering box. Those we didn't see. Guess didn't look hard enough when the side covers were off.

Is there an easy way to access the three grease fittings? Use ramps?

Did carb cleanup, new battery, grandson did some shining. The cub looks great!

He did drive the Cub, needed "driving lessons." :biggrin2:

The deck is off and on saw horses, another project but, looks great other than the paint. Another spring / summer grandson project.

The Cub yellow on the frame, awful. This'll be a spring/summer project. Guessing TSC'll have the Cub yellow?

Nice forums here! The grandsons 'n I will spend lots of hours here! Thanks!

Nice 1641! One of my favorites. You and your grandson will love it. And we are all here to help.

Sam Mac 01-23-2015 08:55 AM

Nice looking 1641.

You can get at the drive shaft fitting by removing the tunnel cover and the side panels and while you have the side panel off you should be able to get at the fitting on the steering box. Recommend you also change the oil and filter for the hydro unless it has been done recently. This link will take you to a bunch of stuff I've done on the Cyclops tractors. Should keep you busy for a couple minutes.

Thanks Sam! Snow forecast this weekend, grandsons 'n I'll be busy beavers.

The hydro oil and engine oil look clean, and full to the mark. Still, fluid changes are high on our list. Hey the boys rather "play" with tractors than girls at their ages.

Also on our list'll be the hydraulic lift, the lever doesn't move not one ioda. We're thinking, off the tractor, disassemble, clean, reassemble. Thoughts?

When I was young, 67 now, a neighbor had an IH Lowboy. I still remember how badly I wanted that red tractor!

CubDieselFan 01-23-2015 09:46 AM

That is a good looking tractor. Welcome to OCC.

I've seen a few that the spool was stuck. shoot some Power Blaster on it and see if you can get at it with a punch and give it a hit. Just be careful of the plastic lever. If you can get it to move just work it until it frees up. Sometimes you can get at the bottom of it by removing the battery. Sorry but this is the best pic I have of the valve. Red arrow points to the end of the spool.

Congrats on the 1641 and time with your grandson
Grease fittings, one of my favorite things. There are 3 on the front axel alone, I get confused sometimes cause I have several machines I maintain. As Sam said drive shaft and steering gear. There might b one on the deck mule drive. The deck has lots of em remove the belt shield. Should be a fitting on every spindle, every wheel, and front caster pivots, also check the tensioner pullys for after market zerks. Also check your front wheels for wheel bearing zerks.
Things without zerks I use spray grease on moving parts, my favorite is Castles muscle grease. Just keep that stuff off your belts and pully grooves, it will make them prone to slippage.

Tankman 01-23-2015 10:21 AM

Sam right on the money, removed side panel and was able to grease the steering box as well as the forward drive shaft zerk fitting.

I can't, don't want to force, remove the low center panel. The little knob on the hydraulic release doesn't want to let the panel raise. Is the knob a press on? Thread on?

darkminion_17 01-23-2015 10:29 AM

The knob unscrews and the you can remove the cover.
Congrats on the new tractors.

Tankman 01-23-2015 10:29 AM

Thanks Steelers fan! Western PA?

I keep the grease gun up front! With time to spare, lots of grease! PB Blaster too!

The deck is now on saw horses, covered, will be a spring project for the boys. The deck does look great, was greased 'n oiled before put up.

We do intend to make the poor '95 Cubbie look like new! And perform like new too!

The grandsons and I take frequent trips to Home Cheapo and Lowes when the outdoor equipment is on display. We laugh, giggle, smile, watching the uneducated purchase new junqué.

cubs-n-bxrs 01-23-2015 10:31 AM

The knob in question is threaded on. It is the hydro release lever.:beerchug:

Tankman 01-23-2015 10:32 AM

Thanks darkminion_17 and cubs-n-bxrs! I'm headed into the barn shortly, just for that chore!
Need to get the project underway, the boys wanna drive 'em cowboy!

The poor 1641 was living out-of-doors, from here on, cozy in my barn!

Sam Mac 01-23-2015 10:40 AM

You can get at the rear drive shaft fitting from under the tractor also.

Tankman 01-23-2015 11:11 AM

Took the cover off, used a little Never-Seez on the threads when I put the center cover and knob back on.

Was glad I removed the cover, cleaned and removed caked on grass clippin's. Oiled hardware, and used my compressor blowing dirt 'n junqué out-a-there!

I've only been in your forum for two days and the help from all corners of the US of A is great. Thanks loads and be sure, I'll be back daily (if not more!).

Tacosteelersman 01-23-2015 11:25 AM

I am from NE PA. Tioga county.

Tankman 01-23-2015 12:01 PM

Bucks County, 'bout 20 miles south of Allentown. Still too close to Philly to suit me.

Was able to get the hydraulic lift workin', thanks Sam!

When I took the deck off, bein' uneducated, I left the frame on. The frame does go up 'n down now! Hey this forum is great, chock full of very helpful advice.

Still winter, a couple of dozer blade questions:

Can the frame I left on be used for the blade ass'y? Guess I need a blade and the hanger frame complete?

I don't see any hydraulics for angling a blade. Would the blade ass'y have a mechanical release and lever to angle the blade?

I'm goin' over to CL and see what I can find.

Thanks again Gentlemen for this forum and all the help in just a day, hours, like magic.

Years ago, never owned one but loved the IH's and red Cubbies.

Welcome to OCC! You aren't to far from me, I live outside of Pennsburg. It's usually easiest to take the deck off the frame (mule drive) and then take the frame off the tractor. A snow blade will come with it's own frame and has a lever so it can be manually angled. Congrats on the new to you 1641, I hear they are great machines. :beerchug:

Tank

The mower frame needs to come off if your putting a snow blade on it. If you would like the service manual PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

Tankman 01-23-2015 03:02 PM

With time on my hands, before I pickup a grandson for the weekend, been playin' in 'n out of the barn.

I uncovered the mower deck, been covered since summer. Of course paint is the pits!

Greased all the zerks, penetrating oil on all hardware, and noted the Cub label.

The deck is a 48" GT Deck 317190. Any idea where I could find the owners manual for this deck?

Disappointed when IH formed CCC but, thank goodness I didn't pickup an MTD. Ugh.

Sam Mac 01-23-2015 04:58 PM

Try this site.

Tankman 01-23-2015 07:27 PM

Geeze that service manual is huge, says it all. Thanks Sam!

The site link above will work. All I have to do is uncover the deck again and get the serial number.

Might you have a wide frame dozer manual?

I think the implement manuals will ease the pain, removing the frames, installing same.

Take some time and look around our tech library.

Cub - No Dozer Yet!

1 Attachment(s)
Grandsons are waitin' to dozer with "their" Cubbie.

Not yet, we're still workin' on the Cub. The Cub is driving fine and the hydraulic lift works great. Sorry, no dozer blade...........yet.

The help from y'all, 'specially Sam the Sham, is great. That's how the lift lever was fixed.

Snow today, had to push it away. I hesitate to say "plow" 'cause I think of the old days, dig earth = plow. Push snow, dirt, gravel, dozer. Does that make sense or am I just old fashioned?

We had to push snow today, 'bout 6". Was easy enough but the boys are chanting, "Cub Cadet....Cub Cadet....Cub Cadet." :BlahBlah:

Grandson on an '85 416-8. One cylinder 16 hp Kohler. A great Horse.
