Another 3K project
 

There I was, having a few adult beverages wacthing the games last night and started surfing CL on my smart phone. That was a dumb move because I spotted a 3000 machine about 2 hours away. My MIL is in need of a good mowing machine so I have been looking for another 3K or else give her my 3165 I used last year. I called the owner and he said it ran great so I headed that way this morning and loaded it up. It has a good running CH23 with only 93 hours on the clock. I don't know if that is correct but it still works.....Oh ya, he forgot to tell me that a tree had fallen on it this morning when we talked.:bash2: I figured if I have to part it I could get my money back, it has a good CI rear, 54" shaft driven deck and other parts that could be sold. I have a spare fender pan off of an older machine that I hope will fit so I will need to call Rich Patton for a hood and headlight bucket.

Good find, I have some interest in these models. I have a few LT's (other brands) with foot operated hydros and step-through frames and they are easier to get on and off and operate around all the trees I have.

Summer has been rough on me this year with work but when I got time I worked a little more on the GT3100. I ended up using the extra fender pan I got with my 3205 and it fit fine but the early 3k's had rear tail & back up lights but Cub Cadet value engineered those out around 2000/2001 so there was no wiring run to them. I had to purchase 2 new tail lights and then wire them into the head light and reverse switch circuit. They don't even have a switch for the lights anymore...must be daytime running lights. I found the hood and a few other needed things on Ebay and most of the other stuff came from my local dealer. They changed the color of the paint a little too but you gotta look at it pretty close to see the difference.
I took it out for a little spin on Sunday for some pics and to run some fresh gas through it. Now I gotta tear the deck down and redo it.....all this work just to sell it.:bash2:

I couldn't get the PTO to work and I found that the solenoid for the vacuum actuator was not opening with power on it. I figured it needed replaced so why not take it apart and see how it works. Here it is mounted on the firewall. The top hose has a check valve and is attached to the intake manifold and the bottom hard plastic hose is attached to the pto actuator.

The bottom came off and there is a spring and a small filter.

The spring pushes up on the plunger to close off the port that is attached to the manifold and no vacuum is applied to the actuator causing the pto to be off. When the switch is pulled to turn on the pto the solenoid pulls the plunger down and the vacuum is applied to the actuator causing the pto to engage.
I cleaned it up and snapped it back together and now it works fine.:beer2:

I pulled the deck off of this machine a few weeks ago to rebuild and paint it.

This is the model 295 deck for the 3000 series machines. It is a 54" cut but they cut a lot of corners from the earlier model 290 decks for the 3000 series.

Here is the newer spindle design. They use self tapping bolts into the aluminum housing. When I tried to remove them they broke off.:angry: Looks like they have been broke for awhile.

A complete new spindle with bearings and seals is around $30 but I'm selling this machine so I chose to just replace the housing. I found them on EBay for about $9.00 each.
