400 tiller
4 Attachment(s)
I ended up with a 400 tiller as a trade on the sale of my 1782 here is the thread. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=36390
Well it needs a little TLC so figured I'd start a separate thread about this project. I'll get some pics of the thing apart tomorrow. Anyway I have it pretty well disassembled. It has 2 broken spirol pins on the output shaft and in order to replace them the whole (lots of 4 letter words) thing needs to come apart. This has got to be one of the nastiest jobs going. It's dirty (I have the water at the shop drained so no pressure washer) the case is full of grease/oil. Well it's apart now I need to order a couple bushings and a gasket. The input looks like it had a bearing take a dump at some point and the shaft spun in the bearing and who ever worked on it (take his tools away) just put a new bearing in it with out repairing the shaft that has a groove worn in it about 1/16" deep so the bearing is hardly doing anything. Of course Cub only wants $113 for the shaft, hello machine shop, here we come. The output shaft with the spirol pins is an asinine design, if your going to have something that is the weak link at least be smart enough to put it on the outside, no... we have two 3/8" spirol pins inside and four 7/16" bolts outside, two on each side. We'll fix this issue. It's getting solid pins welded into the inside and some shear pins on the outside and I'll setup the belt to slip before something important gets hurt. Rant over. A couple pics. before I got into the chain case. More to follow. |
Do you have a picture of the manifold you need for that B&S I think have one that looks similar laying out behind the shop. No promise but I'll look tomorrow in the daylight.
|
I'll get a pic. Pretty sure most of the old flat head 8HP briggs had the same part. I got it off the engine today. Worst case I'll have to repower this thing. May be able to get it welded.

Does one of your SGT's have a rear PTO?

Here's the 8hp briggs out of my chipper. It stopped quite suddenly  http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...5.jpg~original http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...3.jpg~original |

If you had a rear PTO, I was going to suggest a right angle gear box instead of another motor. But, you don't have one so it's out. :beerchug: |

[QUOTE=Jeff in Pa;302324]Is it a down draft style carb? If so, I'm 99% sure I have one.

Here is the one I have, doesn't look quite the same but it may work. Yours if you want. The motor is scrap but I was saving it because it has the reduction gearbox on it.

A few pics of the parts inside the tiller. 1st pic is the worn input shaft, next 3 are the broken manifold for the B&S, 5th pic is a broken flange bearing, 6th pic is the bottom shaft where the spirol pins broke, 7th is the inside of the bottom sprocket, last 2 are the case halves after getting most of the nasty grease cleaned out. Probably will need to change the solvent in my parts washer after this thing. :beerchug:
|
Ouch Sam, atleast the insides of the chain case look great! :bash2:

This is a better pic of the shaft that got messed up from a failed bearing. Thanks to Group_44 telling me about a lower cost Cub parts supplier I have a new one on order. Yep it's still available. Thought this was going to be a machine shop job to fix it, not that it would be all that hard to rebuild.

I have to say the rims on these are always in great shape, cause the were painted.
Now is that the same rear lift that fits on a 2284? |
Lew, it would fit but the correct police may bust you and you will also need the longer lift bar.
|
Thought about the longer bar,not about the police though...

It's pretty much the same as what Xtreme is selling for the Supers. http://www.xtrememotorworks.com/Part...03%20Point.htm |
This is what I will be replacing the 3/8" spirol pins with.
98381A630 Alloy Steel Dowel Pin, 3/8" Diameter, 1-3/4" Length, Packs of 10 Per Pack $7.64 Getting these from McMaster. |
Only progress today was the Brown truck showed up with the pins from McMaster, they fit. Just need to hit them with the Mig. Other parts are due next week.

Got the manifold back on the engine and it runs. Also reassembled the chain case today. Now I just need to put the whole thing back together. So far everything seems like it will work just fine. :beerchug:
|
Thanks for the update Sam.

A pic of the manifold from Jeff on the engine and a couple pics of the chain case. Didn't do anything on it today, it's 14 here at the moment. :beerchug:

Lookin good as always Mr Mac! :beerchug:
|
Moving right along :beerchug:

Made some progress today. It's pretty much back together short of the shafts with the tines and the shields. Hope to get it running before I put those parts back on. No pics today, I forgot the camera. :beerchug:

Pretty much finished the 400 tiller today. It runs nice, no bad sounds. Just need to put the belt guard back on and the chains for the shields. :beerchug:
|
Looks good, Sam!! :beerchug:
You gonna load test it before it goes to SC? :biggrin2: If Galax ground is anything like mine, it might be a while until you can try it out!:bash2: |
