Thanks Eric and Jay
I agree, but the guy used it 2 years ago, choke, throttle, and hydro handle move freely though.

EricR 11-02-2014 11:22 PM

And I bet it has a (fresh rebuild) 5 years ago! LOL

darkminion_17 11-02-2014 11:30 PM

You never know...
I do know the hydro filter was changed in 2001, it is written on the inside of the hood...

Alvy 11-02-2014 11:52 PM

Nice one Lew. All there and hard to find parts, congrats. Lew price I'm assuming? I'm almost sure you "bundled". Seems the right way to buy cubs anymore, 3 at a time. Good job

darkminion_17 11-02-2014 11:58 PM

Thanks Alvy,
yes bundle
you save $

I worked on getting this running today, replaced the bad s/g,new points, plug and gas line.Carb was clean as I pulled the main jet needle and it came out without any gunk on it,at least the fuel pet cock was shutoff cause there was some gas in the tank.

Turned the key and the hour meter, headlights, tailights worked, turned it over and gave it a choke, started right up....but! funny noise coming from the internals, sounded like the balance gears, shut down and drained the oil and a few teeth fell out...

So looks like I have to pull the motor, hopefully some damage was avoided.

On a lighter note, the amp meter shows a charge

kostendorf 11-04-2014 08:44 PM

Fork = balance gears

Sounds like you got lucky besides the balance gears Lew, good luck.:beerchug:

Hi Lew, dang, i didn't think those 169's would have had balance gears. I just took balance gears out of 12, one gear had marks from rubbing something. The crank i guess. It looked like it had 70# oil, for the noise i guess. I was hoping for a used motor, no good, skeeter fogger, must have been a real dog with 70# oil, even the governor was set more sensitive and the rod dipper looked like a banana. It ran pretty good after removing all those restrictions but was a smoker, needless to say the man who was selling me a good used motor got it back. Mike

Yes they have balance gears, took them out today, one was sitting on the bottom of the oil pan.I got lucky, not dipper damage, just a few worn teeth on the crank.
I will wash the inside of the block with brake cleaner, oil up everything and reinstall the pan.I will put a magnetic oil pan plug on it.

See how it runs without the gears.

Looks good Lew, like I always say....wish I lived closer

IHCadetCollector 12-14-2014 06:34 PM

Nice find. It looks a little rough but looks are decieving, found that out with a 129 I bought a while back. I pretty much did the same thing you did to your 169 to get it running.

Cubcrazy 12-14-2014 07:04 PM

Coming along Lew!:beerchug:

darkminion_17 12-14-2014 07:19 PM

Thanks gentlemen and Nick.

I will be looking for a donor to make this pretty again, prolly a 129 or a 109 roller will suffice.
The frame on this is bent and the tins are rotted pretty bad.
A restore in the future.
